The characters in Woodland drink: A lot. In fact, the film begins with a gristly Canuck offering Jake — the photojournalist / protagonist of the film — a shot of homegrown booze that’s supposedly so strong it will make his piss burn. Jake accepts a pour and cheers the man, asking if he’s on the same private fight (to a remote island in Haida Gwaii). The man replies, in deadpan — “I’m the pilot.” We’re off to a seemingly promising start.
Unfortunately, as the plane descends and Jake settled in as a watchman at a wilderness lodge, a moody stupor takes over and the movie squanders its potential at every turn. Liquor continues to flow, rousing Jake and Sparky (the…
A cold and damp thriller about a photographer searching for a path to recovery before his world crumbles, "Woodland" features neatly shot vistas and a story that can not quite absorb its audience. Taking place on a wooded island, the story finds Richard Harmon's Jake subjected to disturbing revelations through his chosen medium. The story toes the line of predictability and dullness, if there is such a line; and, while the lead performance and cinematography are solid, the production can not elevate the tale. The experience is flimsy at best.
I was intrigued at first as for a minute it seemed like a promising slowburn in the wilderness, but this went downhill fast and ended up being a disappointing waste of time for me
The last movie of 2021, and a random amazon pic rather than trying to round out my 2021 movie watching
A troubled man takes a job with a veteran caretaker to look after a remote resort in the Pacific Northwest. He soon finds that his photographs may serve as dire premonitions.
This...wasn't a great movie. The main character is fairly unlikable, and while it has the all too often used "lighthouse keeper trope", where two people trapped together drive each other crazy, This one doesn't work as the other caretaker is just too nice, although there are a couple of places here and there where they try to play with that. Basically, he should have been the POV, not the young dude.
ALSO: wow that cgi bear is just....bad. Like really really bad CGI bad.
An avoid.
It’s a shittier version of the light house, not atrociously bad, just worse in every way.
The good:
The cinematography was pretty good, as a native British Colombian I enjoyed seeing my wilderness on film, the colours are all muted which I liked as it reflected how the main character was feeling on the inside, the nature was bleak and unsaturated which represents his responsiveness to the outside world and the darkroom was a bright and vibrant red representing his anger.
The score was amazing, every track was masterfully constructed however I don’t feel that it fit entirely with the vibe of the movie and it could have benefited from more silent moments.
The main actor Richard Harmon was the…
this was slow and unsatisfying but i think (other than the execution of the plot) the set, acting, and premise were all really good. jake felt a little hollow, however. didn’t feel much for him at all.
the lighthouse if it was in nowen days, with more inhalant-huffing. If Robert Pattinson’s character went to liberal arts school. Still spooky!
I wished I had a premonition this movie was so boring so I could have avoided watching it.
