Schliersee, and day trips

Hi, Im going to go to Schliersee in July with my 12 year old daughter, please can anybody suggest places to visit by train from Schliersee? Ideally we would like to travel for say 2 hours each way maximum! We were going to stay in Munich , but as I once worked in Schliersee! (30 years ago), we thought it would be a good idea to visit Schliersee.

I thought about Maybe Bayerischell, but we would also like to visit Austria, but I presume we would have to go to Munich to catch a train to Innsbruck?

Any help and info gratefully recieved!

There are busses (and trains) to various nearby locations. For example, you can go by bus (or bus train combination) to Rottach-Egern at the Tegernsee. Another nice trip (bus) is from Schliersee to Oberaudorf via the Sudelfeld and Tatzelwurm pass road. I'm not sure if there is a direct bus to Brannenburg, where you can get the cog railway to the top of the Wendelstein.

Go to http://www.bahn.de and play around with various locations that you probably visited back "when". It's the website of the Deutsche Bahn and also gives you bus and boat connections.

Another nice trip is the the Achensee (Austria), but I don't know if there is a bus. The town location to enter would be Pertisau.

To go SUMMER SLEDGE RIDING down the hill from Schliersbergalm would probably be big fun for your daughter.

Visit the website (German language only):

See what summer sledge riding (= Sommerodeln) is like:

http://www.schliersbergalm.de

You can take the cable car to go up to Schliersbergalm if you don't want to walk. The cable car station is about 15 minutes away from the train station.

The lake Schliersee is 5 minutes away from the train station. There you can go on a boat trip or rent your own boat.

HOW TO GO TO SCHLIERSEE:

You take the BOB (= Bayerische Oberland Bahn) from Munich main station to Schliersee. It takes you about 45 min to go there.

A decent restaurant with a big choice of food which is close to the train station in Schliersee is called "Steakalm am Pfeiler". (don't confuse it with Schliersbergalm)

I strongly recommend you to visit Schliersee (and not Tegernsee or Rottach Egern) together with your daughter because there are more things to do for children. Furthermore Schliersee is a smaller town where you can walk all distances.

I grew up in the area. Therefore I know all the places quite well.

Many thanks guys for the replies! Well the train tickets arrived today, so we will be going to Schliersee for 5 nights in July (cant wait!). The hotel is booked too, for 5 nights, we will stay at the Alpenclub Hotel, in Schliersee, for 5 nights.

Stephanie, as you grew up in the area, I have a question or two you might be able to answer please! 30 years ago (when I was just a teenager!) I worked in Schliersee for 8 months,The name of the hotel I worked at wes called ''Schliersee hotel Im Europa Ferienpark''( at least I remember that name anyway!). On looking at pics of hotels on the web, I think it may actually now be called the Alpenclub Hotel? (the one we will be staying at!) I wonder if you have any ideas on this. Also!!! I spent many a happy evening at the 'Gastehaus Zur Poste''! I wonder if that pub is also still there?!

Thanks again for answering guys!

ps you say my daughter might enjoy the summer sledge riding? Well I will too! lol!

Hi Marley,

I'm not sure if we talk about the same hotel. I think it is located in a side street which turns left from the main street if you come from the direction of Weyarn and Hausham (= street which turns right if you drive from Schliersee station out of town). It could be that the name of the hotel has changed.

"Gasthof zur Post" still is there. Close by is an ice cream shop.

Have fun on your vacation!

Hi, my husband and I are hoping to go to Schliersee in October. I looked up Rail Europe schedules and couldn't find a station there. We will be traveling from Venice. How do you plan to arrive in Schliersee by train? Thanks!

I will write a report when I come back, however I worked there for about 8 months, this was 30 years ago though! In 1978/9 (wen I was last there!) it was fantastic, really scenic, clean, fresh air friendly locals etc! So if its even half as good as I remember it.then it will be great!

Another reason why you should not use RipoffEurope for anything except the passes. They only list big stations on main lines.

use http://www.bahn.de for correct schedules.

There IS a station. 100% sure. You can get the information about the trains on the website http://www.bahn.de but the train traffic isn't run by Deutsche Bahn AG but by BOB (= Bayerische Oberland Bahn). Trains depart from Munich from the central station, Donnersberger Brücke (= S-train station) and Harras (U6 subway and some S-trains).
