Cannes 2024: ‘The Apprentice’, ‘All We Imagine As Light’, and more films from MENA and India

The Apprentice

Helmed by Iranian-Dutch director Ali Abbasi, ‘The Apprentice’ is a biographical drama that explores the early years of Donald Trump’s life as a real estate businessman in New York in the 1970s and 80s. It stars Sebastian Stan as Trump, Jeremy Strong as Cohn, and Maria Bakalova as Ivana Trump.

All We Imagine As Light

‘All We Imagine As Light’ follows the story of two roommates who serve as nurses at a hospital. The film will be the 1st Indian film in the main Palme d'Or segment of Cannes.

Motel Destino

Directed by Algerian-Brazilian director Karim Ainouz, ‘Motel Destino’ is a love story between a young man, actively fighting against a system that wants him dead and a woman, fighting patriarchy in her world.

Santosh

Directed by British-Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri, ‘Santosh’ will be screened in the Un Certain Regard section. Shahana Goswami stars as the lead. It follows the story of a newly widowed woman who inherits her husband’s job as a police constable in rural northern India.

Everybody Loves Touda

Directed by French-Moroccan director Nabil Ayouch, ‘Everybody Loves Touda’ revolves around a young singer and poet named Shaeirat, raising her deaf-mute son in a small village. 

Sunflowers Were The First Ones To Know

The Kannada short film ‘Sunflowers Were The First Ones’ will be screened under the Cinéfondation or La Cinef section of the Cannes Film Festival. It is directed by FTII student Chidanand Naik.

Norah

Saudi director Tawfik Alzaidi’s debut ‘Norah’ will be screened in Un Certain Regard. Set in Saudi Arabia in the 1990s, it follows the story of two unlikely characters Nader and Norah whose meeting changes the course of their lives. 

To a Land Unknown

‘To a Land Unknown’ follows two Palestinian cousins who find themselves stranded in Athens after fleeing a refugee camp in Lebanon. It is directed by Palestinian-Danish director Mahdi Fleifel.
