Up the crack without a paddle! Korine revisits the golden age of Hollyweird of his dreams while we revisit the original late-90s release of this novel novel. This reissue is 100% identical to the original text and also 100% more awesome!

Editorial Reviews

From Kirkus Reviews

Riding a gush of critical acclaim for his work on the films Kids (screenwriter) and Gummo (director), Korine, at the ripe age of 23, attempts to make a novel by using a little bit of everything, but botches the job. What we get, in fact, is more an MTV-style collage of lists, story fragments, indecipherable handwritten notes, crude drawings, photos, dialogue, bad jokes, wordplay and pop culture references to music, movies, drugs and deathall resolutely defying cohesion. Still, there a few identifiable thematic concerns. Suicide tops the list, as frequent references culminate in a group of 11 suicide notes, the last of which begins, ``Mother, I am in love with you.'' Not far behind is a focus on the celebrity life, and in this vein Korine demonstrates a certain breadth of knowledge and interest. A scandal involving silent movie star Fatty Arbuckle is given almost as much attention as the final thoughts of Tupac Shakur, and in between are snippets about Kris Kristofferson, Billie Jean King, Howard Hughes, Matt Dillon, and a cavalcade of others. Jessica Tandy earns especially randy attention (although the motivation behind this is never revealed), and sexual detail pops up in other ways as well, ranging from the incest angle to homophobes planning action. The racial component noted in the title features in a suicide note, and separate photos of the KKK and an unsmiling black boy round out the picture. A final observation notes that ``To feel nothing was peace''perfectly describing the impact of everything in the preceding pages. Neither the voice of a generation nor the ravings of a lunatic, but creative overreaching, clearlythe writing of a talent thrust too soon into the limelight. An absolute must read for any Harmony Korine fan. This is one of the most entertaining and enjoyable books I've read in years. Korine proving once again that not only is he a brilliant filmmaker and artist but an extraordinary writer as well.

how this qualifies as a novel is beyond me, but it's great, especially if you are a fan of Harmony Korine, of absurdism, of surrealism. here are a whole slew of seemingly random "pieces" ranging from one word (hepburn) to one and a half pages. dont try to pretend there is any continuity or story here, just enjoy it.
also, fans of Blake Butler will probably dig this, i know i did

Like his filmmaking, Harmony Korine is fearless in his writing. He is a madman and I really enjoy his ability to free himself from social conforms. This book however is not for everyone. There is a lot of one-liner type humour throughout it with smatterings of insanity and shock. If you haven't liked ALL his films, you probably don't need this. If you love his movies, this is for you!

Leona Upton: My boy was burned in a great fire.
Joseph Mohr: Did he die?
Leona Upton: Yes. (She begins to cry.)
Joseph Mohr: Then how my dear could the fire be great ?

Need I say more ?

Harmony Korine's novel is as original as his films. As Werner Herzog notes, this is a completely new voice in fiction. Korine scrapes the underbelly of racist America and spreads pop-culture filth, concocting a novel out of the trash we consume and hump. See his interview on Letterman about this novel--it's as priceless as the book he was "promoting."

Strange, experimental book, where each piece could easily stand alone and ideas skate roughshod from one place to another as effortlessly and inexplicably as clouds reflected in broken mirrors.

There is absolutely no obvious through-line to this book, no narrator, no narrative really, no conventionally connected storyline--just a series of lists and ideas that seem to accumulate into something for both the author and publisher, but something that escaped me entirely on my first read.

The only time present is time within each tiny and seemingly larval idea lump, there's no sense of progress or building toward anything.

I'm guessing this is what is considered by some to be its genius. I'm gonna have to give it some time, then read it again.

Loved 'gummo' from the moment I first watched it, Harmony Korine is carrying the torch from Werner Herzog, interesting book.
