Review #81
Pretty much the same as the previous album, funky soul music. It gets pretty repetitive, and I feel like most of the songs go on for too long with not enough variation. Not my taste.

This record is a 7 when you're sober and an 8 when you're stoned. It's pretty vacuous of deep emotional content, or sincere, heartfelt emotional content of any kind (a fundamental flaw when it comes to the genre of soul). It's pretty generic, pretty forgettable, pretty derivative (a watered down Chicago). BUT!!!;... I really like it. The first two tracks are genuinely good. As a whole, the record is an easy and fun listen. It's fun, easy listening background funk grooves with sufficient instrumentation and genuinely pretty okay solos. There's no real content here beyond the first two tracks, when the conformity of the record starts to become clear, but it works excellently in two contexts; select songs on a nice hangout playlist, or playing the record on a spinner for an energetic and uplifting to accompany you throughout whatever else you're doing that's more important.

A nice effort.
An effort worthy enough to hang around in your funk collection.
What I dig about the group is their embracing of some rock undertones. They are there even if you don't feel or see it smack dab in your face.
It is what gave them their unique sound in my opinion.
These dudes obviously were hit in their soul though, and felt the need to express that first and foremost.
"Cut the Cake" is classic of course, along with "School Boy Crush".
These two are worth the price of the album, and you get a taste of new drummer Steve Ferrone doing his thing.
There is some pretty bad filler hither and tither, but otherwise not so bad at all.
8.7 B

Rates just the same as the self-titled album to me. Dirty 'School Boy Crush' still does it for me.

A marked improvement over its predecessor. The band actually lets loose and the results actually resemble a funk band rather than typical disco. It still is a rather generic affair. The band stays too comfortably on the soft side unlike true funk contemporaries like Sly Stone or Funkadelic. However the whole thing is saved by track 2, "School Boy Crush". Hip-hop fans will better know this as the song infamously sampled in "Microphone Fiend" by Eric B. & Rakim.

The title track is pretty good although very similar to "Pick up the Pieces". The groove continues through the rest of the first side, but the rest of the record especially the ballads never quite pans out for me.
