Doppelgänger IV
Thursday, April 18, 2024 7:30 PM Zankel Hall
Danish String Quartet by Caroline Bittencourt
The exemplary Danish String Quartet presents the fourth installment of its Doppelgänger project, in which they pair one of Schubert’s timeless string compositions with a newly commissioned work inspired by it. The program features Schubert’s mammoth String Quintet, which was written during the final weeks of the composer’s life and is considered one of the all-time greatest chamber works by any composer. The inimitable Thomas Adès—“one of the most accomplished and complete musicians of his generation” (The New York Times)—contributes its Doppelgänger companion.

At a Glance

Composed in 1828, the String Quintet in C Major—for the unusual combination of two violins, viola, and two cellos—was Schubert’s last, and arguably greatest, piece of extended chamber music. It shares tonight’s program with the fourth and final installment of the Danish String Quartet’s Doppelgänger project, a set of newly commissioned works by four leading contemporary composers who drew inspiration from Schubert’s late chamber music masterpieces. Thomas Adès’s Wreath for Franz Schubert, which the ensemble premiered in Copenhagen on March 27, follows in the footsteps of Doppelgänger (2021) by Danish composer Bent Sørensen, Pige (2022) by Finnish composer Lisa Wennäkoski, and Rituals (2023) by Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir.
