Nestled in a prime location near the beach, the La Jolla Shores Hotel is often celebrated for its charming, vintage ambiance and lush greenery. Guests rave about the spotless accommodations and the appealing beach amenities, despite the extra charges they bring. While the attentive service receives commendations, especially for special occasions, some guests have encountered billing frustrations. Furthermore, the rooms, though spacious and clean, are criticized by some for their dated decor and occasional maintenance issues, which, along with additional fees, contribute to concerns about the hotel's overall value.

We stayed here for 4 nights in a third floor ocean front king room. Upon check in they had a first floor room for us, but we requested a third floor and they accommodated our request without hesitation. We did have to wait a few hours longer but we still checked in early. When we got to our room there was a lovely card and bottle of champagne from the hotel as my husband had mentioned we were there celebrating my fortieth birthday. I loved that they were so thoughtful! Our room 340 overlooked the beach and was almost next to the boat launch area. We quickly noticed that on the beach below this was the area that the local kayak companies came to unload and conduct their classes to set tourists out on adventures. It was good people watching for sure. The room itself was nicely appointed and clearly had been updated. The bed was comfortable but the pillows are super soft. You know the kind where you lay on it and your head sinks to the mattress. There aren’t a ton of outlets but we made it work. The shower head is quite low, for me I’m only 5’2” and I thought it seemed low but my husband is 6’5” so it was a little challenging for him. The room though was airy and felt beach. It was really nice. Here’s things to be aware of, at least in our experience. The first night we had our sliding door cracked open to hear the ocean, at 5am we heard a ton of boats being unloaded. It was loud! So we closed the door and turned the air on which itself is quite loud. Secondly every morning we were there city workers would come out to clean under the boat launch area with a big tube attached to a giant truck and also pressure wash the area. So no mornings sipping coffee on the balcony listening to the ocean. More like listening to the very loud whirl of machinery. This started anywhere from 7-9am and would last about two hours or so. That was a huge disappointment. I’m not sure if this is an every day thing but it was while we were there. Will we go back? Absolutely! But we will be sure to ask for a room as far away from the boat launch side just to be on the safe side. With the sweeping views, airy hotel, kind staff and easy walkability plus, beach access and accommodations this is a lovely place to stay, even with the noise issues.

The rooms and decor could use a refresh but the location is just great and the vaguely Spanish style building has a timeless appeal. Given that and the reasonable prices plus unpretentious vibe, it’s worth overlooking the slightly shabby and old fashioned veneer. Catch the sunset from the spacious bar/ restaurant.

We had an oceanfront room on the 2nd floor with a great balcony to sit and view the ocean, the surfers, the walkers and paddle boards, birds and even dolphins. Room was good size with comfortable bed and table for doing some work. Nice coffee maker. It was clean. There was an elevator. Walls are thin though could hear our neighbors. It is a great location. You can walk on the beach for a long ways and you can also walk to a small shopping/restaurant area. Parking is underground with a hefty fee but there is no place else to park. There is a resort fee which includes beach umbrella and chairs if needed. We had breakfast both mornings at the restaurant right in the hotel. French toast was good. What a view and with high tide the ocean was very close. Waiter was very nice and we enjoyed our breakfast. Front desk staff pleasant.

The unit booked not as advertised when booking on the website. The room was modern with a clean lay out and comfortable overall. The website shows an open pretty empty beach....Nope, absolutely jam packed with what looks like alot of inland riff raff and this was end of June with cloudy skies and cool temps. Cant imagine the pack when it gets hot. A bit harsh but i think most would agree....at least for an upscale san diego beach community. Though pretty cool that you can hang out with a bonfire and shoot the good mexican fireworks with no issue late into the night. Dog friendly beach a plus.
Apparently Room service was soo shut down because of COVID that even fresh towel requests were never received. The restaurant staff was good, friendly and accommodating though food and drinks just mmmm ok. Overall for $600 a night i would not recommend. The search continues

The location is very nice in regards to the beach and a few dining options. Front desk staff that we interacted with were nice however, our friends did not have a positive experience. The bath towels are not absorbent and the housekeeping staff could have been much better. After staying there for 3 nights, the coffee or complimentary shower gel, shampoo, etc. were never restocked. The housekeeping staff were constantly knocking at our door at 9:30 am to clean the room - even with a "privacy please" sign hanging on the door. While their diligence is appreciated, no one wants to be pestered to get out of the room that early in the morning. Then on the day that we were checking out, the housekeeping staff not only stopped me in the hallway to find out when the room could be cleaned, she also knocked on the door well before the check out time (again with the privacy sign showing) to see if we were out.

The pool is in the process of being renovated. I understand that such upkeep is necessary however, it might be best to have your guests stay as far away from from the construction as possible. How about you don't use the rooms right next to the pool while it's being renovated? It would be nice not to have to hear the drilling and jackhammering in the morning.

Parking was $50/day. With parking being at a premium in the area and the cost of the rooms already being high, parking in their underground garage should have been included.

There are a ton of hotel options in La Jolla and San Diego for that matter. Might be best to skip this one.

Rooms are underwhelming and you cannot expect to visit the bar or get room service after 8:00pm. Wouldn’t recommend if you don’t plan to go to bed early. The location provides so much potential - too bad they don’t realize what they could provide. Wouldn’t recommend for anyone who doesn’t want to be tucked in by 8:00pm.

I have to admit that when we checked in we were not in the best of moods after getting up at 2:30 am and going through airports and shuttles to get the rental car HOWEVER from the moment we arrived the staff was pleasant and took very good care of us. We had a problem that the outlet for our Cpap machines was behind a king bed that we could not move. The maintenance person was there within 5 minutes to move the bed and get us hooked up. Then down to The Shores restaurant for dinner and wine. We spent 5 days here and it was AWESOME we had a room with a balcony and a kitchenette. Well worth the money if you love the beach and love to listen to the ocean 24/7. Winter has its advantages of less crowds. Go for Restaurant week and you get great deals at Restaurants like the Shores and Marine Room. Room was clean - property did need some maintenance but did not diminish our stay. Best place in La Jolla 💖!

La Jolla Shores is a perfect plan place to mix business with pleasure. I regularly attend a conference at the hotel, but this time I brought my family along. The location and customer service are a great mixture to get away to network and enjoy the wonderful weather with the people you love. My family is excited for the next time they can join me again.

We enjoyed our time at La Jolla shores hotel! We first noticed how great the customer service was. They were accommodating when we wanted to switch rooms (only because we wanted a higher floor) and always open to offering suggestions for things to do and restaurants. The hotel has a shuttle that has a 5 mile radius. There are many great attractions within that 5 miles such as hiking, Scripps Aquarium, Torrey Pines, La Jolla shores village, sea caves, and tidepools. They were very accommodating when they could be. Sometimes the shuttle was busy and we had to Uber it, but its only a $10 uber ride to any of those, so it didn't bother us and they were always very apologetic when they couldn't come right away because they were helping another guest.. Jaime was very accommodating and friendly and Jed was awesome and helped us with our room. Kegan and Larry were the shuttle drivers and they were always enjoyable to talk to along the way. The resort is older, but very clean. We enjoyed taking our breakfast to the raised decks by the restaurant and eating it in the mornings. The coffee was good and fresh every morning. There are great scones at the local coffee shop!

While you are there, I highly recommend taking a walk past the pier. It is gorgeous and you will find a secluded beach with nature and rocks to climb and sit on. Every morning there were surfers and paddle boarders to watch while taking a morning stroll. Just a lovely perfect corner of the world. Will definitely stay there again next time we visit San Diego.

We are from the Midwest and had never been to San Diego before. Our experience at this hotel was just as we expected; the cost (including the $20/day "resort fee") was still relatively less expensive than other beachfront hotels in beautiful La Jolla. The hotel is located right on the La Jolla beach; you can walk right onto the beach, where there is a nice boardwalk and a fun playground for children. The hotel rooms may need some updating, but we didn't spend much time in the room; we spent our time on the beach or exploring La Jolla and San Diego. For us, the hotel had an excellent location and was very effective "home base" for our brief visit to San Diego. The on-site hotel daily parking fee of $28 was steep, but it helped to convince us that the best way for us to visit San Diego (for us) was to use Uber to shuttle us around the area. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating.

Are there laundry facilities on site?
Answer from Bob27
Saint Louis, Missouri17 contributions6 helpful votes
We only stayed at this hotel for 4 nights, so we did not need to do any laundry during our visit. My understanding is that there is a "service" that can launder your clothes for you; I don't think they have on-site laundry equipment for guests who want to "do it yourself." Enjoy your visit to beautful and sunny San Diego!
