Japan awards double platinum and gold certifications to NewJeans and TWICE for streaming success
Japan's music scene is buzzing with excitement as the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) unveils its latest lineup of certified hits!
In 2020, RIAJ shook things up by introducing a fresh certification system tailored for online streaming. This system joined the ranks of existing ones, covering physical album shipments and digital downloads.
Under this new regime, songs clinch silver status at 30 million streams, gold at 50 million, and platinum at a whopping 100 million.
The newest batch of certifications sees TWICE and NewJeans taking center stage with their streaming triumphs. NewJeans, with their catchy 2022 track "Ditto," hit double platinum glory, marking a historic first for the group as they soared past 200 million streams in Japan.
Not to be outdone, TWICE secured a trio of streaming accolades in this month's RIAJ announcement. Their 2018 summer anthem "Dance the Night Away" grooved its way to double platinum status, clocking in at an impressive 200 million streams in Japan alone. Meanwhile, their Korean banger "SET ME FREE" and Japanese jam "Hare Hare" both snagged gold certifications, each crossing the 50 million stream mark.
With these certifications, TWICE and NewJeans have solidified their status as streaming superstars, leaving fans eagerly awaiting their next chart-topping hits.
About TWICE
TWICE, a nine-member girl group under JYP Entertainment, emerged from the 2015 survival reality show "Sixteen". Comprising Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu, the group skyrocketed to fame with their 2016 single, "Cheer Up". This track dominated the Gaon Digital Chart, clinching the title of the year's top-performing single and fetching TWICE prestigious awards like the Melon Music Awards and Mnet Asian Music Awards' "Song of the Year". Through subsequent hits, TWICE solidified its position as one of South Korea's most celebrated K-Pop acts, garnering a massive global following. In 2017, the group earned spots in both "Forbes" Korea Power Celebrity ranking and "Billboard"'s 21 Under 21 2017: Music's Next Generation.

More About NewJeans
NewJeans, an all-female K-pop group from South Korea, made their debut in 2022 under the management of ADOR, a subsidiary of Hybe Corporation, the same company behind the global sensation BTS. Comprising five members – Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein – the group kicked off their journey with a pre-release single titled "Attention" in July 2022, followed by their self-titled EP in August of the same year. Additionally, in 2022, NewJeans made appearances on the variety TV show "NewJeans Code in Busan."
