How to Set a Custom Refresh Rate and Resolution On a Laptop Screen

Unlocking the Potential of Your Display with CRU (Custom Resolution Utility)

Introduction

In the ever-evolving world of computer displays, having the ability to customize screen resolutions and refresh rates can greatly enhance your visual experience. Whether you're a gamer seeking smoother gameplay, a content creator needing precise screen settings, or just someone looking to optimize your display, the Custom Resolution Utility (CRU) is a powerful tool that can help you achieve your goals. In this article, we'll delve into what CRU is, how it works, and provide a step-by-step guide on how to use it to unlock the full potential of your display.

What is CRU?

Custom Resolution Utility (CRU) is a software tool developed by ToastyX that allows users to define custom resolutions, refresh rates, and other display settings for their monitors. Unlike the standard settings provided by your graphics driver, CRU gives you granular control over your display parameters, enabling you to go beyond the default options and tailor the screen output to your specific needs.

How Does CRU Work?

CRU modifies the EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) settings of your monitor. The EDID is a metadata format for display devices to communicate their capabilities to the computer's graphics card. By altering this data, CRU can trick the graphics card into recognizing custom resolutions and refresh rates as native options for the display.

CRU works with both AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards, and it can be particularly useful for older monitors that do not natively support certain resolutions or refresh rates. By leveraging CRU, users can extend the lifespan of their displays and achieve performance improvements without needing to invest in new hardware.

How to Use CRU

Using CRU to customize your display settings is a straightforward process. Below, we'll provide a step-by-step guide to help you get started:

Step 1: Download and Install CRU
  1. https://www.laptop-lcd-screen.co.uk/downloads/cru-1.5.2.zip
  2. Extract the downloaded ZIP file to a location of your choice.
  3. Run the CRU.exe file to launch the utility. It has to be run in Administrator mode, so right click on it and run as Administrator. No installation is necessary as CRU is a portable application.
Step 2: Backup Your Existing Settings

Before making any changes, it's important to back up your current settings:

  1. Click on the "Export" button to save your existing configuration.
  2. Store the backup file in a safe location so you can restore it if needed.
Step 3: Add a Custom Resolution
  1. Select your display from the drop-down menu at the top of the CRU interface.
  2. Click on the "Add" button under the "Detailed resolutions" section.
  3. Enter the desired resolution, refresh rate, and other parameters. For example, if you want to add a 1920x1080 resolution at 75Hz:
    • Horizontal pixels: 1920
    • Vertical lines: 1080
    • Refresh rate: 75Hz
  4. Click "OK" to save the new resolution.
Step 4: Apply Changes and Restart
  1. Once you've added your custom resolutions, click on the "OK" button to close CRU.
  2. Restart your computer to apply the changes.
Step 5: Select the Custom Resolution
  1. After restarting, open your graphics card's control panel (NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Radeon Settings).
