‘Crazy afternoon’ in women’s football: Benfica crowned tetracampeão
11.05.2024 16:09Benfica was crowned, this Saturday, national tetracampeão champion of women’s football in an absolutely crazy final matchday. The eagles defeated Racing Power (2-1), with a penalty kick near the end, and prevented an unexpected outcome, after Sporting, who was facing Damaiense (2-0) at the same time, managed to take the lead for a few minutes.
Let’s break it down. Benfica took the lead in Seixal even before halftime, at 38 minutes, thanks to a goal from Carole Costa and only depended on themselves to confirm the title.
Also in the Lisbon area, in Damaia, Sporting was doing its part and winning, but at the 85th minute of the Benfica game, they jumped to the top of the league because of Racing Power’s goal, scored by Lobato, which drew the match in Seixal. At this point, the two rivals were tied on points (54), but the tiebreaker criterion (head-to-head) favored the lionesses.
The lionesses’ stay in first place would prove to be short-lived, as Benfica would once again take the lead in Seixal and regain the championship lead due to a penalty kick, with Carole Costa scoring from the 11-meter mark.
After all was said and done, Benfica ends the season with 56 points, two more than Sporting.
The eagles, it should be noted, have already won the Super Cup and the League Cup this season, adding the league title now. Next week, they can complete the sweep of competitions if they win the Portuguese Cup final against… Racing Power.
