Agatha has outspooked herself with this ghoulish plot devoid of compassion and an unnaturally high number of wicked characters. A complex back story keeps the cauldron bubbling while Poirot dominates proceedings like he hasn’t done for a while.
As befits the season, you’re led on an increasingly bleak journey through the gates of an enchanted sunken garden and plunged into the unforgiving world of narcissism, ruthless self-preservation, and illicit affairs. Then darkness falls with a deadly game of blackmail, a sad discovery, and a ritualistic sacrifice planned to remove the last flicker of innocence.
The foul play starts when Poirot’s friend, the crime fiction writer, Ariadne Oliver, tries to exorcise the ghost of Dead Man’s Folly by keeping everybody alive at a party she helps organise at a friend’s house. Sadly, it all goes wrong when a guest is discovered face down in a bucket full of water recently used for apple bobbing.
Was it something they said? They certainly weren’t popular. Only their school friend, Miranda, had anything kind to say when interviewed by Poirot. Everybody else thinks the victim was a compulsive liar whose claim of witnessing a murder was simply a boastful attempt to impress Mrs Oliver.
Unfortunately, it was a declaration that upset an evil presence enough to dunk the poor child to death just yards from their friends and Poirot is asked to investigate. As in his previous case, Third Girl, Poiror initially searches for a murder that might not have happened. Only here, the deaths are piling up as he conducts his interviews and it becomes a race against time to prevent a final terrible tragedy. What happens next is the stuff of nightmares.
Hallowe’en Party is not for the faint-hearted. Read it if you dare. Just don’t confuse it with the film A Haunting In Venice. This book is set in Woodleigh Common and there’s no haunting. It’s a completely different story.
Well turns out adaptation or even inspiration is a very strong words. Both the book and movie have some characters who are named the same but that's about all the connection.
Still it was a very enjoyable read with twists and turns that keep you guessing the whole time. Exactly what you would expect from the queen of mysteries.
That being said, this novel is a fun mystery, though it isn't Christie's best. It starts out slow, though once Hercule enters the story, it picks up. The middle of the novel does slow down again as the pieces of the mystery or put into play. Having read her other novels, I can say that this part of a mystery novel often slows down at times, but this novel slows down even more than expected. While the information is important, it feels as if there could have been a more exciting way to present the story. What saves the novel is the reveal of the murderer. I will admit that I had it guessed early on, though I didn't guess all the elements at play. Once it was all revealed, I did find myself coming around to the novel and the story established. It could have been revealed in a better manner, in my opinion. Then again, I'm not as good a writer as Christie, so I can't make a huge critique.
I'd read it again, though it isn't my first choice within the Hercule Poirot collection.
I grew up reading Agatha Christie and watching the BBC movies of Hercule Peroit and Miss Marple with my mom. I am a huge fan and I look forward to many more books turned into movies with the current Piroit.
This book is classic Christie! Definitely a must read!
