Is Charlotte a sad anime?

I really want to watch Charlotte but I really don't like watching anime that will make me sad. I realized that the creator of Charlotte also made Angel beats and Clannad. So thinking this anime will go down the same path is not unreasonable.

Maybe without spoilers anyone can answer with yes or no

Do any of the characters die?

Anything really sad happen?

will I feel depressed after watching this?

It made me sad because I had high hopes for it.

HentaiProducer

Maybe Maeda needs to change mediums to suit his cliched storytelling.

Right ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

It's the shittiest anime I've enjoyed and also biggest let down of the season.

u/HentaiProducer avatar

I kinda agree? It's not the shittiest though, but I was really disappointed at how everything was done.

At least Spoilers for Ep. 13

Sad? If you call poorly developed characters death sad then yes

Watch Classroom Crisis instead.

Charlotte wound up being a very rushed mess that makes poor attempts to wring out your tears. It's been a massive disappointment for nearly everyone I've seen commenting.

r/anime is not the general population. Charlotte is actually a very highly rated series. I think it's worth it for someone to try it out for themselves to see if they like it. You don't see One Piece getting much love here, yet it's the most successful anime/Manga of all time.

u/vetro avatar

Nothing in my comment implies I was referring to any other group of people besides r/anime.

That's what I said. You told OP not to watch it because you've seen negative comments here on r/anime, when in fact r/anime is a very small portion of anime watchers. You shouldn't judge an anime based on what you see here.

u/vetro avatar

Okay, then I'll remove that part if that makes you happy. But OP is asking for opinions on r/anime, he's gonna get r/anime opinions.

Sorry man I wasn't trying to pick a fight, I just don't like people trying to throw their opinions on others without giving them a chance to form one themselves. All OP asked was if it was sad or not, yet not only did you tell him not to watch it, but you also said it was a massive disappointment.

r/anime/ taste is pretty mainstream
"not the general population" reserve for places like 4chan.

As someone who checks out nearly every thread in this subreddit, I can tell you that is definitely not true. Around here, most people will rate a show lower just because of the fact that it has fanservice. Ecchi along with shounens are two of the of the most popular genres of anime, yet they are constantly hated on this sub. Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, and Fairy Tale are a VERY popular shows that get treated as if they're run of the mill here. Nanatsu no Taizai, another really popular anime barely got 100 comments per thread here while it was airing.

You'll see the same anime recycled in every "favorite" or recommendation threads here. Like TTGL, Madoka, Steins;Gate, Gintama, FMA:B, etc. And while these anime are very popular, this sub is pretty close minded when it comes to mainstream. What's popular here isn't necessarily popular everywhere else; take Rokka no Yuusha for example. It was one of the most popular anime this season here, yet it sold horribly in Japan.

I don't care if you say I'm wrong or downvote me, because I'm in this subreddit every single day and my post history proves that. I know how this subreddit is.

Is classroom crisis a sad anime?

u/vetro avatar

There are some emotional moments, yes.

I'm not, because I don't have the expectation to begin with.

It does have some sad moments later on. But I feel it's impact could have been greater if they built it up better through the season and if they had more episodes to build up the premise.

u/FilipinoSpartan avatar

It's not particularly sad, no.

u/_Vipper avatar

It tries to create sad moments, but the impact of said moments is pretty minimal

What is sad about it is all the money that were wasted on making it look pretty and the zero effort on the script

I for one, found Charlotte to be an Emotional Roller-Coaster

There are SOME incredibly sad parts, yes. But then, there are parts that completely cheer you up or make you laugh. I'd say the "Not Sad"/Sad Balance throughout the series would lean on a 60/40 scale. The Peaks go high and the lows go Subterranean on this roller coaster.

will I feel depressed after watching this?

It has a very Angel Beats-esq ending, but doesn't leave you hanging like it did. This ending is a little more "Okay, and that's that."

Hope that helps, don't mind the "OMG CHARLOTTE WAS SO BAD, IT FELT RUSHED..." comments, the circlejerk is strong with this one. The Day is still too young for intelligent conversations

I actually like reading the opinions of everyone and apreaciate the comments but the way I rate and determine how good an anime is, is completely different than everyone else. So seeing that the show was "rushed" didn't affect me.

I just needed the confirmation that it wasn't sad to get me to watch it.

u/JoshMcCown2013 avatar

Kinda sounds like you're saying everyone who doesn't agree with you is lacking intelligence lol.

Damn Right I Am

(JK) no i'm just saying it's just in it's beginning stages of its' "circlejerk of life cycle".

People read what the top comments says and adopt their opinions and feelings entirely based on another persons perspective and go around spouting what he/she said as opposed to making their own opinions about it instead.

u/JoshMcCown2013 avatar

I mean some people do have their opinions based on popular opinions, but I really didn't (and I'm sure many others). I quite enjoyed the show up until episode 11, when my opinion completely changed and the little issues I had with it started to annoy me more.

And you are the one with poor intelligence if you think the only thing Charlotte did wrong is it's pacing

Never said anything of the sort

Yes but not as much as something like anohana.

If you're going to watch it, you MUST watch the whole season though.

Haven't watched it but have yet to find someone who thinks it is shit (though a few he say it is overrated). Why would you say its shit?

Edit: Thanks for those replies!

u/JoshMcCown2013 avatar

I wouldn't call it "shit" because I enjoyed the first half-ish of the series, even though it was just kinda "power of the week". But people don't really like it because later in the series it's pretty random having a main villain introduced for one episode then never mentioned again and some of the "main" cast don't even feel like they should be in the show at all. It also tends to go from a happy series, to dark, then happy again within the span of a few minutes.

Basically the first part(1-5) is "Key" elements shoved together, baseball, student organization, SoL comedy etc, but everything seems so forced.

Second part(6-10) WANTS to make you sad, but choose a character that the audience have minimal emotion attachment to "kill off", yes she may be important to the MC but why should we care?

Then you have the major intellectual breakdown in Ep11, everyone's action just became literally dumb, a shadow of their former self. Of course, this is because the writer is fucking dumb.

I hope Jun Maeda never try doing an original show ever again.

Plenty of people think it's shit (me included). The threads for it have been pretty negative in general lately, too. It was just a massive trainwreck, tried to do way too many things at the same time, resulting in a gigantic clusterfuck of a plot and really chaotic pacing. People blame it on it only being a single cour, but with the quality of writing at display I doubt any format could save it.

Hell, just read the responses in this thread. It's not very well liked.

After reading all these comments, that's exactly what I did. I went in with zero expectations and came out relatively satisfied. (yeah I just binge watched the whole season).

Considering I wasn't expecting anything it was easy for me to just enjoy most of the episodes and not feel disappointed.

Maeda claimed Charlotte will be "a revenge toward those who disliked AB".

Well, I guess he did it.
AB haters are now converted into Charlotte haters.

Not as sad as most other animes, just very rushed
