In the near future, Goku, a former police detective turned private, is investigating a mysterious string of apparent suicides of a special police unit investigating a ruthless weapons merchant. The hero is cool and shirtless, the babes are hot and shirtless and the villains are mean and sleazy... and also mostly shirtless. Just the way I like it. Leave it to Yoshiaki Kawajiri to press as much style, sex, nudity, action and violence into his Science Fiction Neo Noir short OVA as possible. The plot is nothing special and feels a bit like a pilot/origin story to a longer series. But it's really is the animation and the wild unhinged ideas like a motorcycle stripper who shoots lasers out of her mouth, that make this essential viewing for adult Anime fans.

A shirtless p.i. with an eye able to hack every computer, a hypnotizing peacock lady, a motorcycle girl with handlebars, a deadly virus transmitted by fucking swans (literally!), hilarious nonsense 🤪
Yum yum yum yum! OVA slippy slop to chow down on! Goku: Midnight Eye is a fucking treasure trove of nonsense. Cybernetic eyeballs, detached heads that blast lasers, lots of violence, lots of nude ladies hypnotising cops into jumping off buildings, and the lead has both a GREAT CHEST-EXPOSING outfit and a GREAT FROZEN facial expression. I love the dark grimy backdrops. I love future Tokyo (2014). I love the cyberpunk-noir mash-up. I love its no nonsense approach. Violence and grime first, questions later.
Side note: My partner pointed out in the end credits song, it kind of sounds like the vocalist is singing, "Farting in the dungeon!" Now that false line is stuck in my head on loop.
Perfectly inhabits that shaded area of the anime Venn diagram where transmuted homage to American pulp tropes overlap with that 1980's anime aesthetic - before the sumptuousness of the Miyazaki / Ghibli golden era kicked in and there was still a slight note of Saturday-morning-cartoon in the look and sound (although obviously elevated well above that).
A tale as old as time, really. Hardened ex-cop turned private investigator becomes caught up in a rash of police suicides. When the conspiratorial force comes at him, he is rescued and given an eye implant allowing him to control any computer in the world with nothing but the power of thought. Shenanigans ensue.

You hold the world in your hand, or rather, in your eye.
Privatdetektiv Goku investigiert, fährt und kämpft sich durch das cyberpunkig-neonflackernde Tokyo des Jahres 2014.
Hier geht es auch freizügig und brutal zu - Verführungsversuche und blutig gebrochene Kiefer inklusive - wenn Goku im düsteren Milieu versucht verdächtig viele Selbstmorde von anderen Ermittlern zu untersuchen.
Stripclubs, Waffengeschäfte, Bioterrorismus, Gedankenkontrolle, bionische und cybernetische Körperteile, übertriebene Coolness, diabolischer Bösewicht und Motorrad- und ... Pfauenlady??? Also vieles was sich nur japanische Manga-Autoren ausdenken können, wird sehr ästhetisch in tollen Farben und mit starken Schwarz-Weiß-Kontrasten präsentiert.
Ist aber auch nicht verwunderlich, denn Yoshiaki Kawajiri hat für eine eher erwachsene Zielgruppe noch…
Oh my god, this literally has a robot stripper modified with handlebars being ridden like a motorcycle mount. If that’s not the most Yoshiaki Kawajiri thing ever, I don’t know what is.
The rest is extra bizarre (ie hypno-peacock-induced suicides) cyberpunk action, with all the uncomfortable Kawajiri misogyny and slick Kawajiri style you’d expected.
There's a naked lady motorcycle which has plasma cannons that a villain rides. Goku wastes them all. Really love these types of OVAs.
Our fleeting time on this planet is meant solely to search for things that go as hard as this.
Sleazy but amusing little OAV featuring all of Kawajiri's usual tropes in a bite-size package.
