Didn't live up to the Hype

I keep reading about this place in expat articles but it didn't live up to the hype for me. They were part of a burger week and I was looking forward to it but it was average tasting, underseasoned and overpriced for what it was. On the plus side it was Argentinian steak night on the Tuesday I went so there was some pretty good prices for mojitos and steak. I wish I tried the steak instead of the burger but I did enjoy the mojito. The service at this restaurant needs improvement - I felt like there was nobody working in there as it took a while to order and it took even longer to get a glass of water. The restaurant is nice with lots of comfy indoor and outdoor seating.

Excellent Experience

Fantastic meat, fresh lobster, variety of side dishes, good wine choices, an overall very pleasant experience. But wait - how many restaurants do you know that have wonderful waitresses who see that you have a cast on your fractured wrist so without being prompted, proceed to cut your steak into manageable pieces for you. Daisy, you are an absolute gem. B & C should be proud to have you on their team. I will certainly be back every time I am in Shanghai and will recommend the restaurant to all who want to listen. Thank you Bull & Claw.

Food Poisonous! Run away from this place!!

Went there with my mom for dinner, had a salad and ribeye steak, and that's the start of my expensive nightmare.... I will never come back to this place.

Oysters special offer!

Had the special offer for oysters and regretted it. Neither good for the stomach or my wallet. Don't think the Irish oysters were very fresh. Always find this place slightly pretentious.

Christmas at The Bull & Claw... oh my. Disappointing

I usually enjoy this restaurant, but Christmas dinner, what a disappointment. RMB888 for below average food, mediocre service. Uncoordinated and Inattentive staff. There was absolutely nothing special about this evening, nothing exceptional except the high price. Good thing I didn’t get the free flow for an additional RMB388. But hey it is Christmas. Nice restaurant and good service, but how can it be they still didn’t repair the tap in the restroom - when the repair take place I also advice a deep cleaning!!!

Great Brunch

We had a great brunch here with a group of friends. The food is great and a reasonable price for a brunch in Shanghai. The service was great, except at the beginning when a lot of us ordered together, then it was a bit slow. The food is tasty and good portions. Definitely worth a visit

Good food, relaxed environment

Met a couple of mates for a Friday dinner and chat. Nice atmosphere and pretty good food, we split a Nova Scotia lobster which was grilled to perfection, plus a New York steak and an order of BBQ ribs. Decent beer selection and a nice Malbec to sooth the palate. Great service to boot, but it wasn’t overly busy. Great Old French Concession neighborhood, a nice evening.

We spend quite some time in the place. Food is always fresh and good, simple and casual. In particular ideal for Brunches to enjoy on the terrace. Service is casual also, but efficient and nice. We will continue to go there regularly.

Good Service with Low Food Quality

A client took me and others to this restaurant for lunch the other day. The quality was not worth the price they charge. As the restaurant was busy, it seems they can command the prices they charge. The food quality was not very good, but the service was good. The waitress informed me that the dish I ordered would take longer and served a complementary drink without asking when it took longer than expected. She was available and came to check on us reasonably - not too often but not too seldom either. The food arrives when prepared and everyone is not served at the same time as in western style of serving. It was a suitable place for a business meeting and for talking, though.

My go to brunch place in the French Concession, also recommended for dinner is you like lobster

I regularly eat at The bull and claw as it has great atmosphere, good food and is a great option for birthdays and spending a Sunday in the sun on either of the terraces. Although I generally go here for brunch, I have also had dinner here quite a few times. The restaurant is housed in a beautiful old villa that oozes charm. On weekends it is usually packed so make a reservation, on weekdays it is not too crowded so you can usually just walk in for dinner or make a last minute reservation. The place is known for its surf & turf (I prefer the surf myself). Although I prefer eating there in Summer as the terraces are lovely, the fireplace makes the restaurant very cozy in Winter as well. The brunch set up is good value for money (if you have the free flow) and offers you a choice of either a two course or one course meal. Portion size depends on what you order - all the pancake and waffle options are quite heavy while the portions of egg dishes are not too large. For dinner I recommend the lobster (except on BBQ nights). Wine is very fairly priced for Shanghai standards and service is friendly and helpful. On the weekends there are many groups so you may have to wait a bit longer for you order to arrive but the food is well worth the wait!

Great Steak and Lobster Joint

Have been here on several occasions both in the evening and for brunch. The A la carte menu is great offering a wide range of mostly meat dishes. Highlights would definitely be the Beef Wellington, Lamb Shank and any combination including a lobster and steak! Brunches are also a fantastic deal where you can get up to three dishes with unlimited drinks from 11-3. Recently a rib roast has been added to the menu which is amazing and the portions are more than enough to satisfy. The waffles are also divine and enough to share between two! Highly recommended if you are after a lovely lobster or steak meal or both!

Wow! Great brunch with unlimited drinks for an extended time 11:00-3:00. Brunch options were delicious and varied French toast to burgers or lobster tacos and everything in between.

Have heard allot of good things about this place. My wife had her birthday so I decided to take her to this fabulous restaurant. Tried to send a message / mail to book a table and asked for a birthday cake and cappuccino. I replied in my mail saying that I have book via phone. The replied saying they have made my booking. I waited 3 hours and decided to call because no reply on my mail. We arrive with high expectations, we ended up ordering a vege burger and beef burger and salmon to my daughter. The portions are SMALL, decided to order dessert because nobody remembered that my wife had birthday. This place have so much potential, awesome atmosphere but they couldn’t unfortunately not meet my expectations.

Great place to relax and enjoy good food

The Bull and Claw is a very popular restaurant off Hengshan Road. Very good menu with excellent food and drink. Offers a deal for 198 yuan for unlimited drink until 9 pm. Good starters and a variety of main courses. It was raining when we went there bbut in good weather we would have been outside in the summer heat.
