Reviews
- Very solid CHIC album in all but name. Standouts are "Saturday", "Sorcerer", "I like love" and the ballad "I believe in you".
Both "Saturday" & "Sorcerer" were released as singles, but should have been much bigger hits.
Be sure to check out Dimitri From Paris' 9 min + EPIC remix of "Saturday"--much better than the original LP mix. - Norma Jean Wright (born in Elyria, Ohio) was the lead vocalist of the soul, R&B and disco group Chic, from 1977 to 1978.
She left Chic in 1978 to begin a solo career, billed as "Norma Jean" & this album was produced &, in the main, written by Bernard Edwards & Nile Rodgers as a goodbye & thankyou.
This album has the classic Edwards / Rodgers stamp all over it; rock solid groovy b lines & funky as hell whacka whacka guitar riffage... layered on top of this foundation are some classy soaring string & brass orchestration & of course Norma's sweet soulful voice.
To me the stand-out track on this album is 'I like love' which is 5.42 of pure goose-pimple inducing disco funk soul gloriousness...
Opening with a simple Rodgers guitar riff, layering on an Edwards bassline & suddenly giving way to a full on orchestration & vocals which builds & builds until it suddenly drops away at 3.03 where we are treated to a jaw-droppingly glorious 2 minutes worth of midsection breakdown with Rodgers riffing his heart out building with incremental layers of Edwards bassline, strings & Norma Jean vocals until kicking back in at 4.04 with a full on crescendo & outro...
This is utterly utterly smile-inducing & it's such a crying shame this tune wasn't pressed to 12" as it is crying out for a full phatt pressing.
