Hamburg might definitely be worth a visit, especially if you have the chance to spend a night there. If you are staying 1.5 weeks then take a trip with the ICE (inter city express, its the german version of a bullet train) on saturday morning, and return to hannover sunday night. Its about 20 euros one way and takes about 1hr20mins. My personal favorita area im hamburg is probably hafen city which used to be the docks and now got gentrified into cafees and shops with apartments above. Its got canals and is right across from the port. Highly recommend a port tour on a tourist boat if you get a chance. It takes like 40 mins but gives you an amazing view of the city from the water plus the tour guides explain interesting stuff about the cities history. I think tickets were like 10 euros, tipping not expected for those kind of activities in germany. Oh and if you want to watch the sunset if the day is nice the go to a bar called "Strand Pauli". Its basically and outdoor bar on an artificial beach by the water with really cool seating and a gorgeous view of the port/water/city.

You could also visit the Harz mountains to the South East of Hanover. Beautiful nature for hiking as well as historic towns and casltes like Quedlinburg, Goslar, Wernigerode.

Do the red thread walk in Hannover on your day off. It covers all the landmarks.

Tip: Time your walk so that you’re at Aegidienkirche when the bells ring. It rings 4 times a day (9:05, 12:05, 15:05 und 18:05)

i personally like Hannover zoo a lot!! and i do recommend going to hamburg- it’s a couple of hours away so not too bad distance wise (: the Altstadt is really nice

In Hannover and surroundings there is:

  • The Rathaus

  • Multiple Museums

  • Altstadt

  • Schloss Marienburg

  • Maschsee/ Maschteiche

  • Eilenriede

  • Steinhuder Meer

  • Ihmezentrum

  • Lister Meile and Hauptbahnhof/ Kröpcke

Hamburg is always worth a visit. And in between is Lüneburg, which I can recommend, too.

Hannover is large enough so that you won't lack entertainment in the evenings. There are museums, bars, restaurants, etc.

Second the rec to visit the zoo in Hannover.

Still, you might want to check which time you get off from work and how much time you got to get elsewhere.

In nearby Wolfsburg you got "Autostadt", which is basically a huge VW museum and the "Phaeno" museum, which is a unique combination of art and science museum. Can highly recommend both. Phaeno normally closes at 5 pm during the weekdays, which makes it tricky. During school holidays they are open until 6 pm. Thursday and Friday the 26th and 27th of May (Ascension Day) are the next time the Phaeno is open until 6 outside of weekends.

Train from Hannover to Wolfsburg takes between 30 min and 1h 22 min. See https://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en The Phaeno is right next to the train station and Autostadt is very close as well.

Another thing I can highly recommend is seeing some really old buildings. Lüneburg is great for that, but the Harz region comes a close second. Especially Quedlinburg is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Hanover itself is a bit short on historical buildings since it got bombed heavily during the second world war and was rebuild according to the philosophies of the car centric city movement. Nevertheless there are a few nice buildings and places to see like the Welfenschloss which now is the universities main building, the new town hall, parts of the Zooviertel district, the Eilenriede city forest, and parts of the Nordstadt and List districts. The remaining parts of the old town are alright, too. For typical German food I would recommend dinner at "Das kleine Museum", Grotestraße 10.

Definitely explore surrounding smaller towns like Celle or Lüneburg, these have legitimately beautiful old towns. Hamburg is only an hour away if you take the ICE (as you should, the highway is littered with construction sites at the moment).

If you are into car's you might want to think about a day trip to the Autostadt in Wolfsburg which is a car based theme park built next to the Volkswagen plant.

Yes. Hannover has a well deserved reputation for being bland. Hamburg would be a good destination for a day trip, and there are a lot of other places that might be of interest to you within day trip distance. For looking up train connections, download the app DB Navigator or use the website bahn.de.
