Who Do You Love: A Novel Kindle Edition

#1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Weiner delivers "a tale of love against the odds" (People).

Rachel Blum and Andy Landis are just eight years old when they meet one night in an ER waiting room. Born with a congenial heart defect, Rachel is a veteran of hospitals, and she's intrigued by the boy who shows up alone with a broken arm. He tells her his name. She tells him a story. After Andy's taken back to a doctor and Rachel's sent back to her bed, they think they'll never see each other again.

Yet, over the next three decades, Andy and Rachel will meet again and again—linked by chance, history, and the memory of the first time they met, a night that changed both of their lives.

A sweeping, warmhearted, and intimate tale,
Who Do You Love is an extraordinary novel about the passage of time, the way people change and change each other, and how the measure of a life is who you love.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Perfectly realized… This moving story of love that spans a lifetime is Weiner at her heartstring-tugging best." (Kirkus Reviews)

"Readers will simultaneously want to savor and devour Weiner’s latest... With her well-known humor and charm, she conveys the essence of first love, particularly the adage that true love never dies. Complete with a riveting, realistic recounting of 9/11 and a plot twist that will make your jaw drop, Weiner’s brilliantly written novel will capture your heart." (Library Journal (starred review))

“Weiner’s latest is pure romance and utterly heart tugging, showcasing her ability to write characters that readers will instantly connect with, flaws and all. There is a special delight here in getting to know Rachel and Andy from childhood to adulthood, and readers will find themselves laughing, crying, and hoping right along with the pair.” (Booklist (starred review))

"Overwhelmingly this is an affecting novel about how people carry the heavy burdens that came with their lives -- and how they set them down so they can goon... Weiner draws her characters with empathy and nuance. We take the 30-year journey with them, and root for them along the way." (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

"Weiner (All Fall Down) tugs at the heartstrings with her latest tale of angst and love. Weiner's achingly real characters will keep readers engaged all the way through." (Publisher's Weekly)

"Readers will laugh, cry and find themselves caught up in the story, as Weiner explores the idea: 'Do soul mates really exist?' Weiner brings the characters to life with intricate details...It's a story about love gained and lost, and love eternal." (Associated Press)

“A tale of love against the odds...Weiner's latest is a summer heart-warmer." (People)

"It’s
The Fault in Our Stars all grown-up: Two kids meet in an ER, cross paths later—and don’t die. Thank you, book gods.” (Glamour)

“The author of
In Her Shoes gives you all the feels. About two kids who meet in an unexpected way...and continue to do so throughout their lives. It’s like One Day meets 'When Harry Met Sally' meets your new beach read.” (TheSkimm)

"This is Weiner's first-ever straightforward love story, centering on two characters,Rachel and Andy, who meet as children in the hospital waiting room. The book chronicles their journey through adulthood, as they determine whether they're soul mates despite wildly different backgrounds: Rachel, from a wealthy family and born with a congenital heart defect; and Andy, from a poor neighborhood in Philadelphia with dreams of running in the Olympics." (The Washington Post)

"Grade: A. An emotional love story of heartbreak and hope." (In Touch magazine)

“A novel about first love, growing up, and fate from the incomparable Jennifer Weiner.
Who Do You Love is a love story about two people who fall in and out of touch over and over again but never stop thinking about each other.” ” (PopSugar)

"Weiner has made a career out of conjuring women who have body image problems, falling out of love regularly and are generally relatable to the rest of us... From her first novel, Weiner has a mastery of the telling detail. Her latest novel has a notably more serious tone from her past work. The main characters meet in the hospital when they're both eight years old and spend the rest of the novel moving in and out of each other's lives." (Jewish Forward)

“Weiner’s books are about very real, three-dimensional women who face very real, complex problems:body image issues, distant mothers, alcoholic fathers, infertility, addiction, cheating partners, loneliness, societal biases, suburban snobbery, and more. Reading one of her books is a completely engrossing experience, and you finish the final page feeling like you can face your own challenges with just a little more courage.” (Refinery 29)

"Jennifer Weiner returns with what might be her best love story yet. The sure-to-be smash is a classic love story, told over the course of two decades, twisted up with modern cultural observations and maybe just a miniature ode to Save the Last Dance and When Harry Met Sally." (The Austin Chronicle)

“A good old-fashioned heartstrings-puller, one that readers will happily lose themselves in at the beach (or anywhere else, really).” (Book Reporter)

“Next up on our summer reading list: This newly-released must-read!” (Good Housekeeping)

“A must read... This roller-coaster romance—of two people from two very different sides of the track—proves we can’t choose who we love.” (New York Post)

"A good old fashioned love story that will leave you swooning." (She Reads)

As a devout Weiner fan, I was so excited to get her new book and immediately began reading. As usual, her work is marvelous. Weiner uses a contemporary issue and situation in which to portray her characters and set her plot. This one was quite timely: abused, poor, addicted women and their children. Setting the circumstances of each of these women who become clients of Rachel, we learn so much about the times and the problems of class structure and what happens to women and their children when they are caught up in the less desirable activities of the time. I was particularly moved by the way Weiner depicted Rachel with all of her privilege during her college years in her sorority only to be so taken with a less privileged young woman that her life was changed so that she undertook social work. Ironically, she was very good with her wretched clients who had never known privilege. As well, the introduction of steroids into the lives of the premiere athletes after the Olympics was as timely as the evening news. What a combination! The way that Weiner brought Rachel and Andy together with so unique--I fell in love with him from the time he was 8 years old, just as Rachel did. Andy came from a life the opposite of Rachel where he had to struggle for the smallest physical things and work very, very hard for emotional stamina to survive in that background as a mixed race youth. I was so happy when he was accepted to train for the Olympics and almost had to read ahead to see if he made it--but I controlled myself. The breakup when Rachel was in college was so traumatic for me. I could understand Rachel because her background has prepared me; but, at the same time, I could see Andy's point as well. Obviously, Rachel understood him for that too contributed to the change in her life. When Rachel moved to New York and began to deal with Brenda, my heart went out to her: she wanted what was best for her clients. Moving to Oregon gave me hope for Andy and Rachel as a couple. When the plot moved to his denouement, my heart absolutely broke! I was so disappointed in Andy for his thoughts and for his actions. Maizie became the dark character and my own personal enemy. By that time, I should have given up for the day and gotten some sleep, but no indeed. I was too involved. When Jay entered Rachel's world, I relaxed a bit and did give up for the night. The next day, rather than napping, I was reading and I was rewarded with the very best climax one could imagine. I do admit that I never gave up hope, but I got pretty close a couple of times. I cannot recommend this novel too highly: it is superb. My compliments to Weiner, I must now await your next novel.

I can easily imagine Who Do You Love by Jennifer Weiner being made into a romantic movie. It’s got the necessary ingredient: a couple who seemingly appears to be destined together having met as kids who continuously come together over the years only to be separated and continue on their lives while secretly still pining for each other. Not really know how good of a movie it would be, but as a book it was a great read from one of my favorite authors.

Being a Weiner fan for a while now, I’ve come to expect well-written stories with charismatic characters. Who Do You Love is no exception. From the start, it was so easy for me to get engrossed into the book. While the plotline sounds familiar (like I said it can be another Hollywood romance movie), its content and story were not banal. Weiner’s couple, Andy Landis and Rachel Blum (“it’s bloom like flowers, not blum like plum”), were the heart of the story and by necessity needed to be charismatic and sympathetic figures whose story and journey through life, whether together or separately, were those who we would want to read. Suffice it to say they were, due to Weiner’s ability to create characters, like Andy and Rachel, who are likeable but still human. Add to that, she had them seem so different on the surface, Andy being a fatherless biracial child living with his single working mom on the lower economic ladder and Rachel being a Jewish princess spoiled and protected by her parents due to being born with a heart defect and thus being constantly in and out of the hospital, but at their core had more in common than anyone would believe. Through their budding relationship and beyond, you see how they see themselves, the world they live in and their place in it. While the bigger story is a love story, within in it is an exploration of finding yourself and of what (or who) you truly want. It’s so obvious Andy and Rachel have a unique connection and truly love each other, but it was interesting to see how it is that they end up separated. And the thing I enjoy about that aspect is how it’s never cut and dry. There are no clear “bad guy” to blame. They each had their part to play in the time they have lost and their own idea of what it is to be together. You’re not aware of what you had and lost until time has passed and you have the perspective that comes with time and experiences. The love was never in question in this book. It’s always seems to be whether they are at the right place and mindset in their lives to actually fully realize they were meant to be together.

While the book doesn’t have the humor which is found in her previous books (it’s the main thing that made me a fan of her books), the charm and sweetness is there. The drama never gets to the point where it weighs down the book and Weiner manages to retain a certain innocence in her story by her writing. She was able to make Andy and Rachel charismatic and likeable so as to make you want to find out how their story unfolds and inevitably ends. The question of who you love seems to be an easy one to answer, but as the book shows, it’s never as clear cut as we believe/hope it to be.

SPOILERS. This was a great story with really well fleshed out characters and complex relationships. The one thing I did not like was how easily Andy suddenly became a superficial ass and decided that he "deserved" a supermodel over the girlfriend he was supposed to love, let his girlfriend go so easily, jumped at every opportunity with the super model, and then apparently asked her to marry him and have babies even though he knew he never loved her like the one that got away. You have to be in a forgiving mood to appreciate the ending. Or, at least willing to overlook Andy's shortcomings, which he never atoned for or apologized or explained with his true love, in order to enjoy the HEA.

I have read all of Jennifer Weiner's books, soon after they are published for a number of years. I find the strong yet fallible leading ladies so real and personable.

Who Do You Love continues to contain that strong woman, and writes from several perspectives. I enjoyed the passing of time, and the highs and low that the characters follow though the book.

If anything this feels a little bit more 'grown-up' than Weiner's previous books but it continues to be a pleasure to read and is a complete page turner.

I will be ready to read the next book Weiner publishes and hope its as enjoyable as this one.

I have been a Jennifer Weiner fan for a longish time. My favourites have been "In her Shoes" and the Candace Shapiro books. Have always liked her writing style and the content/storyline.

This book, in my opinion has failed on both the above mentioned counts. The plot was weird to start with and I was waiting to see how she fleshes it out; but sadly what a disappointment! Neither of characters is interesting or inspiring. Andrew Landis' character was built up well but I never could
" get" why needed to do drugs!!

Anyways, not worth reading: that's my summary.
