Codicil to Abraham Van Buren's last will and testament, 24 March 1817

I, Abraham Van Buren Do make and publish the following as a Codicil to my last Will and Testament hereunto annexed, bearing date the Eighteenth day of February last, and to be considered as part of my said last Will & Testament. First, I do hereby give devise and bequeath unto my beloved Wife Mary all my Household furniture and personal Estate (except what is herein after except’d, & what is herein after devised,) to be used enjoyed, or disposed off as her necessities may require, and whatever may remain thereof at the time of the decease of my said Wife Mary, I give devise and bequeath the same to my Daughters Jane and Derika To hold to them their Executors, administrators & assigns. Second, I give devise and bequeath unto my said wife Mary my negro Servant Jack t[o] S[erve her] during her natural life, and af[ter her] decease, I give and devise my said Negro Servant Jack to my son Abraham to Serve him until his Term of Service expires. Third, It is my will and I do hereby declare it as my intention, that acceptance of the above devises to my Wife Mary shall not be considered, so as to Debar her of her right of Dower in the Estate devised to my son Lawrence in my Will hereunto annexed. Fourth, I give devise and bequeath unto my Daughter Jane the Choice of one of my Cows & one of my Heiffers at a reasonable time, after my decease. Fifth I give devise and bequeath unto my son Lawrence my negro M[a]n Pomp and all my farming utens[ils] of what kind or nature soever, and [. . .] l do hereby ratify and Confirm every p[art] & parcel of my said Will which is not [inconsisten]t with this Codicil. In Witness wher[eof I have] hereunto set my hand and seal this Twenty fourth day of March one Thousand eight hundred and Seventeen.

Signed, Sealed published & declared by the said Testator as a Codicil to my last Will and Testament in the Presence of us who have Subscribed our names as Witness in his presence & in the presence of each other
