BBC Four presents The Read, where acclaimed actors bring classic literature to life, offering a fresh perspective on iconic stories. In this installment, BAFTA-winning actor Steve Pemberton lends his talent to narrating Kazuo Ishiguro’s contemporary classic, “The Remains of the Day.”
“The Remains of the Day” is a beautiful and haunting novel set between the wars in a grand English house. The story is told from the perspective of Stevens, the stoic head butler. During the summer of 1956, Stevens embarks on a holiday through the English countryside, prompting reflections on his past. The novel explores themes of heartbreak and longing, questioning whether tradition and reserve have led to aching loss.
This creative performance reading is part of the second series of The Read, which has featured narratives such as “Frankenstein” narrated by Alex Kingston, and “A Kestrel for a Knave” narrated by Christopher Eccleston. “The Remains of the Day,” presented by Steve Pemberton, adds to the collection of iconic British novels showcased in a fresh and engaging way.
