The Remains of the Day with Steve Pemberton

BBC Four presents The Read, where acclaimed actors bring classic literature to life, offering a fresh perspective on iconic stories. In this installment, BAFTA-winning actor Steve Pemberton lends his talent to narrating Kazuo Ishiguro’s contemporary classic, “The Remains of the Day.”

The Remains of the Day” is a beautiful and haunting novel set between the wars in a grand English house. The story is told from the perspective of Stevens, the stoic head butler. During the summer of 1956, Stevens embarks on a holiday through the English countryside, prompting reflections on his past. The novel explores themes of heartbreak and longing, questioning whether tradition and reserve have led to aching loss.
