Amy Strum of @MeNursesUnion called on the Maine Legislature to require safe nurse-to-patient ratios. “Hospitals love to talk about a nurse shortage. There is not. There is a shortage of nurses that want to work in the conditions we are forced to work in”. Dr. Michael Melia, Chief of Emergency Medicine at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, said that there has been a "level of violence across the department not just with that individual patient but because of overcrowding and boarding, that puts that patient and other patients at risk". Our local hospital, Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center, is the second largest hospital in the state of Maine, and we seem to all know somebody who has an issue at the hospital. As a result, we reviewed countless online negative patient experiences and discovered the hospital has not been attaining good patient safety ratings. This is surprising considering the President and CEO of Northern Light Health have targeted patient safety. Let's take a look at one department in the hospital - the pediatric department. Study finds US paediatric medical errors kill 4500 children a year(Harding, Anne. BMJ : British Medical Journal; London Vol. 328, Iss. 7454, (Jun 17, 2004): 1458. DOI:10.1136/bmj.328.7454.1458-b) 4500 children a year unnecessarily killed. This petition is based on a pediatric critical care physician who alerted hospital administrators that serious patient safety issues existed at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center. Dr. Anne Yered, A board-certified critical care pediatrician, notified them that her colleague and Medical Director of the Pediatric ICU only did 1 year of a 3-year critical care fellowship. Critically ill children have died due to unqualified pediatric critical care physicians taking care of critically ill children in other hospitals in the United States. Dr. Yered was meeting with other physicians outside the hospital, hoping they could improve patient safety together. Dr. Yered has been threatened, to the point of a senior manager climbing through the woods in her backyard to confront her (this also happened to another physician who previously complained about patient safety issues at the hospital, and the same manager also violated her private property by hiking through the woods in her backyard unannounced). Regardless of the intimidation that Dr. Anne Yered has endured, she continues to fight to protect critically ill children at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center. In 2020 Dr. Yered brought patient safety concerns to the CEO and President of Northern Light Health. Physicians at the hospital were meeting about these patient safety issues, and Dr. Yered brought patient safety concerns to hospital administration. Shockingly, shortly after that, Dr. Yered was, without cause, required to leave her position at the hospital. We, the public, need to know what is happening at the hospital. Are there other healthcare workers who are too afraid to come forward to divulge what is happening? We need to get to the bottom of what is occurring! We can't continue to go through these uncertain healthcare times with healthcare workers too afraid to step forward with concerns. When hospitals keep a physician like Dr. Yered quiet, they keep all of us quiet. How can we overcome invisible enemies like COVID when we can't even confront visible issues like abuses to patient safety? This petition needs to send a message that communities like us, students at a university, elderly people in nursing homes, rural communities, or others will not tolerate quieting healthcare workers who stand up for all of us!! Allison was one of 42,939 Americans violently taken from us by traffic violence that year. Allie was doing something any kid might do: riding her bike after school. She was riding her bicycle in a crosswalk – in a school zone – just a block away from our home. Her 40-pound body was no match for the transit van that struck and killed her. Our lives were shattered in an instant. I will never forget the disbelief and horror I felt that night, walking away from the body of my only child, who had been so vibrant and joyful just hours before. A mundane Monday turned into a living nightmare. Preventable crashes like Allie’s happen every day, all across the United States. And things are getting worse, particularly compared to peer countries. In the U.S., the number of pedestrians killed by drivers just hit a 40-year high. It is outrageous that our vehicle safety rating system only applies to the safety of those inside the vehicle, and does not take into account those outside. Vehicles on our roads are 24 percent bigger than they were in the year 2000, and they have bigger hoods and often worse visibility. It is no surprise that they are also disproportionately deadly for pedestrians, cyclists, and those driving smaller vehicles. Their “five-star” safety ratings tell a dangerously one-sided story. It doesn’t have to be this way, and we must take action. Join me during the current public comment period to demand that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) include a vehicle’s risk of killing a pedestrian within their five-star safety rating system. SUV-related injuries rose 91% and fatalities increased 75% between 2016 and 2019. For every 1,000 pounds a vehicle weighs, crashes are 46% more deadly, so as American cars get bigger and heavier, deaths will only continue to climb. People deserve to know if the vehicle they are about to purchase is one of the most deadly cars on the market. NHTSA and the U.S. Department of Transportation must do the common-sense thing and expand the safety system to truly protect everyone. Raise and extend Unemployment benefits for those affected by the WGA and SAG strikes.Crew members, vendors, and other affiliated workers in the entertainment industry have been forced out of work for over seven months now with no end in sight. We are facing financial ruin with no opportunity to work. The EDD benefits max amount of $450 a week and are ending for most people. That amount is not even close to paying something a person can live off of, when an average one bedroom apartment rents for $2800 a to $3600 month in Los Angeles. In NYC it’s even more. With interest rates the highest they have been in over 20 years, credit cards and loans aren’t options. We need our benefits increased in California, not just during this strike but for the future going forward to match the cost of living with Los Angeles, being the second most expensive city in America to live. The government has reassessed minimum wage, why not unemployment benefits? This is an economic emergency. It’s time for government intervention. We cannot stand idly by while Florida's unjust property law, SB 264, perpetuates hateful treatment. It's time for action! On May 8, 2023, Governor Ron DeSantis signed SB 264 into law, dealing a severe blow to the AAPI community. This law unfairly targets and restricts Chinese citizens, as well as citizens from Cuba, Venezuela, Syria, Iran, Russia, and North Korea, from owning property in Florida starting July 1, 2023. If you are not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, forget about ever owning property in Florida! The restrictions also apply to citizens of Cuba, Venezuela, and other "countries of concern." They've left us with a mere loophole that grants limited access to those with non-tourist visas or asylum, allowing them to purchase just a single residential property under two acres—provided it's not within five miles of a military installation. But here's the shocking truth: Florida boasts over 20 military installations, conveniently situated near major cities like Orlando, Miami, and Tallahassee. To make matters worse, prominent builders such as Lennar and Dr. Horton have taken deliberate and audacious steps to deny property sales to ANY visa holders from China. This cruel discrimination only adds fuel to the fire, intensifying the magnitude of this unjust law. It is a grave injustice that cannot be overlooked or dismissed! This appalling law harkens back to a dark period in history when false claims of "national security" were used to discriminate against Asian immigrants and other marginalized communities. In the early 1900s, similar discriminatory "alien land laws" were enacted to keep Chinese and Japanese immigrants from owning land. These policies inflicted financial hardship and fueled violence and discrimination against Asian communities. Thankfully, courts eventually struck down these laws or state legislatures repealed them for violating the Constitution's equal protection guarantees. Yet, the AAPI community continues to endure violence and discrimination, from the unjust internment of Japanese Americans during World War II to the blame and harassment they faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. We refuse to let national security become a veil for racial and ethnic discrimination. SB 264 threatens to perpetuate harmful stereotypes and further marginalize our AAPI brothers and sisters. But we won't back down! On May 22, 2023, The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU of Florida), Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP, the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF), and the Chinese American Legal Defense Alliance (CALDA) took a bold stand. They filed a lawsuit challenging Florida's discriminatory property law, SB 264, on behalf of Chinese citizens who have chosen Florida as their home, where they live, work, study, and raise families. Their fight is our fight, as they argue that SB 264 violates the Constitution and the Fair Housing Act, institutionalizing and expanding housing discrimination against individuals of Asian descent. Furthermore, it unfairly casts suspicion on anyone with names even remotely associated with Asian, Russian, Iranian, Cuban, Venezuelan, or Syrian origins who wishes to purchase property. The legal team wasted no time! On June 6, 2023, they filed an emergency motion for a Preliminary Injunction, demanding an immediate halt to the implementation of Florida's discriminatory property law, SB 264, set to take effect on July 1. We urge you to join our cause, to stand against SB 264 and the plague of hate and discrimination. This fight requires your support! We call on you to take decisive action: Publicly denounce all forms of anti-AAPI hate and discrimination, lending your voice to counteract these destructive forces. Allocate increased funding to AAPI community organizations tirelessly combating hate and providing crucial support to victims of hate crimes. Save Our Community MuralLos Angeles as always been a promoter of expressing art it is a big reason why so many of us love living here. At Speedy Auto Tint we are proud of our mural because we are a Latino/ family-owned small business, and we believe this mural represents the city of Los Angeles and the culture it embodies. When we reached out to the artist., Sloe, on Instagram we thought he would lust leave us unread. For those that don't know the artist that completed our mural in Bell flower is the same artist that was featured during the Super-bowl with Vanessa Byrant in front of his art. Sloe created the beautiful iconic mural of Kobe and GiGi in the clouds wearing their wings in Downtown LA (this is why we thought we were going to stay unread). We are very thankful that Sloe answered, and we believe this mural is just as iconic as the Kobe and GiGi one. We also feel it will attract new business for us as well as the city. This mural has already attracted a lot of people and it just finished this past week. With the mural attracting so many people to Bellflower it not only helps our business but the local business in the city as well. It helps bring people into the local businesses and boosts the economy in the city, making it a win for everyone. The City of Bellflower wants us to take down this beautiful artwork because it is facing a main street instead of being located on a wall facing a side street. Why keep art to be only seen from the side instead of where everyone can see and enjoy its beauty. The month and half it took for this mural to come to life we had a constant flow of admirers that would be yelling from the street in their car, pulling into our parking lot, or walking by and feeling the need to stop and express how much they enjoy and appreciate the mural being done in their community. The artist Sloe and his apprentice Ariel did an amazing job and if you can believe it entirely with spray paint. Yes, that beautiful artwork and amazing detail is done by spray paint, they are incredibly talented, and it would be a shame if we had to take down such a beautiful piece of art. **UPDATE** We’re actively working with the Mayor and Bellflower City Council to reach an agreement. They have been collaborating well with us and while we are confident we will reach an agreement that will suit us both, we still need your support to make it happen! Shame on CopperPoint Insurance - Justice For Gilbert!Our brother Gilbert Aguirre of United Goodyear Firefighters L4005 has been battling cancer (as well as CooperPoint Insurance) since being diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia 8 years ago. Leukemia is considered a presumptive work-related cancer and has been stated so in Arizona law for years, but CopperPoint Insurance has denied his claims because they state "chronic" leukemia is different than leukemia. Insurance companies should NOT be able to parse words of legislation to deny coverage in order to protect their bottom line! Gilbert and his family have been battling CopperPoint Insurance in court. It's one thing to have to battle cancer you received while serving the public, it's yet another to have to fight for healthcare at the same time. This action raises concerns among conservationists and animal rights activists due to the potential for severe animal abuse and cruelty during transportation and captivity. Toque macaque monkeys are endemic to Sri Lanka and are classified as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list. The mistreatment of animals in China is widely known, and exporting these endangered monkeys to China could lead to unimaginable suffering for them. China is known for keeping animals in cramped cages, subjecting them to brutal conditions, and using them for various purposes, including medical research and entertainment. Moreover, Sri Lanka bans almost all live animal exports, and the proposed sale would go against the country's conservation efforts. The Environmental Foundation, a Sri Lankan animal rights group, has criticized the proposed sale, saying there has been no nationwide survey of the macaques for more than 40 years, and a proper population study should be carried out first. As concerned individuals, we must prevent unnecessary suffering and abuse of highly intelligent animals like the toque macaque monkeys. Therefore, I urge you to take immediate action to prevent the proposed export of endangered toque macaque monkeys from Sri Lanka to China. Senator Steve SantarsieroStop Trinseo PLC from poisoning our drinking waterThe people of Philadelphia and Bucks County deserve access to safe and clean drinking water. The Trinseo PLC chemical plant—also known as DOW Chemical plant or Rohm and Haas—in Bristol, PA, has repeatedly put our community's health and wellbeing at risk through their negligent actions. This past weekend, Trinseo released nearly 10,000 gallons of dangerous chemicals (methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, and butyl acrylate) into our waterways. This incident has not only affected our local water supply but has also jeopardized the health of the entire city of Philadelphia. We cannot allow this kind of reckless behavior to continue. As a homeowner in the community and someone who works in Philadelphia, I experienced firsthand the impact of their latest negligence. Like many of my neighbors, I found out about the spill on Sunday, 3/26/23, even though it occurred on Friday night. The lack of timely notification and clear communication from city officials led to panic and fear. Unsure of next steps, many people rushed to purchase bottled water in bulk which inherently led to a supply shortage at grocery stores. Trinseo has been operating in our community for a long time, and we have already seen concerning incidents in the past. As this NBC report notes, in 2012 a three-alarm chemical fire took place at Trinseo and exposed the community to dangerous toxins. Unfortunately, a first responder was also killed as a result of the fire. From contaminating our air, to our land, and now our waters, Trinseo must be stopped! We urge the City of Philadelphia and Bucks County to shut down Trinseo PLC chemical plant permanently. If Trinseo cannot operate without putting our drinking water at risk, then they should not be allowed to continue their operation. The health and safety of our community must come before profits. Protect Safe and Accessible AbortionThe overturning of Roe V Wade was just the beginning of the battle to protect reproductive rights. Most abortions are done through Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved medications and new lawsuits threaten access to those approved medications to millions of women. Health and reproductive rights advocates fear many will turn to unsafe, self-induced abortions if access to these medications are banned. If you believe access to these medications should be protected, add your voice to the petition calling on Congress to act to enshrine access no matter where you live. As reported by the Guttmacher Institute, over 90% of abortion patients in the US obtain their procedure in the first trimester, with the majority of them opting for medication abortion. Medication abortion, using the FDA approved combination of mifepristone and misoprostol for up to 10 weeks of pregnancy. If you believe access to safe and legal abortion is fundamental to reproductive health and freedom by calling on Congress to act to make mifepristone accessible to all individuals seeking safe and effective medication abortion regardless of their location or financial status. My name is Star and in 2021, I had an abortion. I went to a clinic in Knoxville, Tennessee where they gave me the abortion pills (mifepristone and misopristol) to end my pregnancy, but due to me being almost 12 weeks pregnant, the pills didn't work. I then headed to Charlotte to get a surgical abortion. I was scared both times but I was more relieved than anything because I was able to get the help I needed. Even though I was able to get the healthcare I sought, others in my position will not be able to if Congress bans mifepristone. Mifepristone is safe and should be accessible to all who seek it. I stand with any and all people who seek abortions and you should too. If you believe that people deserve safe and legal abortion care, please sign this petition.
