Remembering Yusuf Sibai on His Death Anniv.

Today (Feb. 18) marks the 105th birth anniversary of Yusuf Sibai, who is considered one of the greatest Arab authors of all time. He was an exceptional literary figure and a renowned political official who played a significant role in shaping Arab literature and art. Yusuf Sibai was highly influential in introducing Arab culture to the West and vice versa. He is generally cited as the outstanding creative literature figure and author of early 20th-century Egypt.

Born on June 10, 1917, Sibai was a celebrated writer who won numerous awards throughout his long-standing career. He was particularly famous for his romantic novels.

Sibai began his career in the armed forces after receiving his degree from the Military Academy in 1973. While still in the Military Academy, he wrote his first novel, 'Al Atiaf' (Ghosts).

In 1952, Sibai ended his military career as Director of the Military Museum. He then took over as Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Arts and Secretary, and later became Secretary-General of the Afro-Asian. In 1964, he became the Minister of Culture in Anwar Sadat's government.

Unfortunately, Sibai's life was cut short when he was assassinated on February 18, 1978, by an extremist Palestinian group in Nicosia, Cyprus. He was attending a conference dedicated to peace and security for the nations of the world at the time of his death.
