Great resort, best theme park in the UK, but please fix Skyride
First time visiting Alton Towers, really loved it here, loved the variety of different rides and themed areas. Loved Smiler, Oblivion, Thirteen, Galactica. But one major criticism is Alton Towers you absolutely have to fix the Skyride to make it easier to get around the park, it's incredibly frustrating and knackering having to walk 30 plus minutes partly up hill to get from Galactica area to Smiler. Please fix the Skyride asap.

    Cute day out
I would recommend this to people who enjoy rides and walking! Its a massive theme park with tons of different activities to do! However, i do believe it would be better if they had more benches around the rides as many people do not like certain rides and wait for other members of their group but there are only few benches dotted around. Overall enjoyed the day out !

    2 days 14 rides
I booked this trip at the start of the year for 4 of us, my husband and I and my teenage daughter and her friend. After reading the reviews I went with very low expectations. In the end we had a great time. Day 1. Oblivion, Nemesis sub tera, galactica, curse of alton mannor, blade, runaway mine trin, Congo River rapids, wicker man. Longest wait 90 mins for wickerman. It had been closed all day but opened at the end. No fast passes needed. Arrived at 11 left at 7. Day 2 13, Gangsta Granny, Smiler, octonaughts, pinball whizzer, Rita. Arrived early 10 min wait for 13 then straight over to Rita, waited 20 mins and when we got to the front it closed. Waited another 15 to see if it would be fixed quickly but then told it wouldn't be. Waited 50 mins for pinball whizzer, again got to the front and it broke down. This time with people on it. Looks like there's a fail safe that the cars return to upright position as everyone who was stuck looked safe. We were then due to go on the smiler with the 1pm fast pass and after seeing people stuck on the pinball whizzer and Rita also broken I was terrified! We waited 20 mins with fast pass definitely worth the cost and wait and we survived and didn't get trapped. Unfortunately the camera wasn't working properly and my dragster and husband didn't get a photo. Rita opened at the end of the day, stayed 75 min wait but was well over 2 hours. Arrived at 9.30 left at 5. The photopass worked well I would recommend that. Took a packed lunch and only bought juice and Crisps from vending vaccines. Overall much better than I expected, managed to do all the rollercoasters and it stayed dry our whole time. I think it would be good to give people that are near the front when it breaks down a fast pass to return as it was happening a lot. Luckily we only experienced it twice but you could see on the app them closing often. Also fix that smiler camera! Gutted at not having that photo! Or warn people the back seats don't have photos.

Massive potential but fell a bit short!
It’s a bit of a mixed bag this one as the park itself has massive potential, but it’s really badly sign posted which was a real bug bear for us. Surely navigating a place like this should be easy, clear and fool proof but it was far from that! When you can’t clearly find the monorail there’s an issue! I think when you’ve experienced the delights of Disney and how efficiently those parks are ran, it’s difficult to compare, but whilst they got a lot of things right there is room here for much improvement. Theming could definitely be better, more immersive, more theme park style music. Better transportation around the park, maybe a train/buggy system as the place is huge! Shame the sky ride was off and the tower itself closed. Surely that’s such a missed opportunity for the park with all that history. Such a beautiful building too. And as for the accommodation, the woodland lodges were ok, the star pods looked quirky and the Alton towers hotel itself was nice but the food options are generally expensive and poor quality. For a family of four or more I imagine it gets very expensive. We were just a couple and still spent over £300 for park access including an overnight stay. It’s probably not somewhere I’d return but once was nice and we made the best of it.

    Fantastic family holiday.
We stayed at the enchanted village for our daughter’s 7th birthday. We had the best time. We also got to check out the CBeebies hotel. Can’t thank Terri enough. She made our little girl’s trip. She treated her like royalty. She is an asset to the resort. We will definitely be returning.

    Fun three days overall
We had booked two nights in the enchanted village resort, so we could spread our activities over three days. We headed straight for the rides, via the monorail. The Cbeebies land is suitably close to the entrance. The kids particularly liked the Octonaut roller coaster ride, which has been suitably designed for the little ones; just the right amount of scary speed. We enjoyed the different shows including Furchester show live, Hey duggee, teletubbies, Bing etc. The adventure playground also a hit with the different costumed characters coming around and the kids taking pictures with them. All good fun over the three days. We went on suitable family rides too. The app helped advise distance and queue times for rides suitable for our most little one. Sometimes, it would help if height restriction is clearly stated at the entrances; sometimes too many words before the main info, or height info too subtle, especially considering all the excitement. On the second day we visited the water park. All good fun for the whole family, for all ages. Things are done well but some glitches, like concerns with our resort room, which thankfully we were upgraded to the Alton towers Hotel, and offered kids entertainment in the Cbeebies land Hotel, which was a lot of interactive fun, especially the swashbuckle. Also, on our third day, the monorail stopped working, but there were no frequent updates as to restart of operation, even from the staff, who did not know. It was a bit of walk (like 15 minutes) from the entrance allocated to accommodation guests. Thankfully, there were interesting items along the way. We had a good time overall, but thoughts in the balance about the hotel room conditions and facilities.

    Breakfast at The Crooked Spoon!
I visited Alton Towers this week along with my husband and 2 children aged 4 & 8. We stayed in The Enchanted Village arriving Thursday morning and leaving Sunday. On Thursday and Friday we had passes to the park and on Saturday entry to Splash Landings Waterpark. Alton Towers is as expected, vast, busy yet beautiful. Rides were great, not that we got on many as despite being “quieter”, there was still up to a 3 hour wait for bigger rides and even an hour for the smaller ride in CBeebies Land! And although somewhat expected, it does ruin your visit a little as it’s hard to get a lot in. It was also very hot so queuing in this heat with little or no shade was testing and if not dangerous for the littler ones. Food and drinks were also expensive but not bad quality, just not a huge selection other than your typical Fast Food options. We stayed at The Enchanted Village which is beautiful and almost makes you feel like you’re in Hobbit Land! Lodges had everything you needed however my only bug bear was that there was no ventilation as there were no windows other than a teeny tiny 30cmx30cm one in the kids room which also opened out on to bush so even if it did let any air in you couldn’t leave it open for the risk of insects etc in the room. It was also a little dusty in places and had the few hairs in the bed but otherwise was clean. Each little area had its only play park in the centre which was a good extra for the kids. The best part to Enchanted Village was the on site Restaurant - The Crooked Spoon and in particular the Breakfast! Amazing quality food and would stay forever for this alone! The main evening menu was otherwise a little boring and with not much choice for the adults, the kids menu was pretty decent though. We also ate at The Secret Garden and The Rollercoaster Restaurant which was quirky and place to eat just for something different but again, not a huge menu and quite overpriced for what it was. The only thing I would say is that the waiting staff appeared chaotic at times in all restaurants, as though it was too busy for them despite it being a quieter time. In the main Splash Landings Hotel Entertainment area, we had to wait a minimum of 35 mins in a queue just to order a drink at the bar, in case queuing at all of the rides in the day wasn’t already enough! Lastly, the Monorail! You’re better of walking even with it being further away. It wasn’t working a number of times and on leaving the park we were again queuing for approx an hour just to board it, and queuing through a walkway/tunnel which again had no windows or ventilation and filled with hundreds of hot and stressed visitors wasnt the most pleasant! Overall would go again but would try to go at an even more quieter and less hot time in order to combat most of the above. It was like there wasn’t enough staff to help and assist the number of visitors but considering it was meant to be quiet, I dread to see what it’s like when it’s busy!

    Amazing as always
Alton towers team are fantastic, they are always there to lend a hand. Great with the kids making sure they are all safe. Everyone is so professional and welcoming. Don't have a bad thing to say about the place other than the weather. Truly grateful for the CBBs team for making the children's experience one to remember. The domestic team have their hands full with all the visitors but manage to keep the place spotless and welcoming to all guest. 100% 5stars from me. I LOVE everything about Alton Towers!! Thank you to all that work there you keep the place going!! :)

    Great Fun
We went to CBeebees Land and the children both loved the theme park - for my two year he loved Postman Pat, the bugsies cars and the playground Hey Duggie. For my 8 year old she loved Peter Rabbit ride, the Tree Top and the mini Octonauts Rollercoaster. Unfortunately CBeebees Land hotel was awful 😞 and really put a downer on our four night trip

    Worth a visit
Went before English schools broke up. Had no issues with ques, wonderful 3 days. You could do this park in 1&1/2 days, and the waterpark for second 1/2 of second day. Waterpark is quite expensive but you can spend all day there, a wee cafe inside it so you can keep swimming kit on, grab a seat and a bite to eat, we brought in a picnic. Lots of flumes too, 3 that go to outdoor pool, 3 for indoor oool, endless activities for the kids as well as seating benches so us parents can grab a coffee and sit and watch. Only one small part of pool is 1.4m so it’s really safe for any kids over 1.2m to go have fun. Can imagine it’s not as pleasant at height of holidays. One thing I would say is bring packed lunches, the food is very expensive and all high calories fatty stuff, hot dogs burgers nachos waffles & donuts. Not to my liking. Nothing for people who can’t eat high fat food. All in all was a wonderful 3 days.

We made 2 bookings for a stay In the Splash Hotel in July for two days back in January and because of the coronavirus we decided to cancel. I duly paid 2 x £24.95 cancellation fees at the time of booking just in case our plans went awry (there were a total of 11 of us staying at the resort). I sent an email requesting cancellation of the bookings and requesting refunds (over £800) on the 9th June.
I first then received a "you can stay anytime till 2021" totally avoiding my request for refund and it was only when I pointed out that I had pre-paid for cancellation fees did they agree to refund.
I have been chasing the said refunds ever since than and they have totally ignored many emails(I tried to call them on numerous occasions but they just hang up on you) including raising a complaint and writing directly to the Customer Services Manager - Today I have looked at my credit card statement and the refunds have been actioned - not that they have made me aware of such.
Please, please avoid making Hotel bookings at this place unless you are prepared to lose your money or are prepared to have to go through much stress and inconvenience. Never again!

I have just had a three day/two night stay, staying at Splash Landings Hotel. The hotel is clean and pleasant, and ideal for a young family. I chose to stay here as the youngest that was with me is twelve years old, and would have loved going to the water park. I thought as a resident that this would be free. Apparently not. This is where the first problem started. You have to go onto the website to book, and cannot book at the hotel reception. Trying to book this was a nightmare. The site kept crashing and would let me fill in debit card details. After reloading the site after several attempts it would only allow PayPal to pay. I don’t use this, so decided to give it a miss. Youngest was disappointed with this. Due to the current pandemic time is limited to one hour slots, but the price is still£16.50 per person. Rip off in my eyes, as nearly £50 for the three of us is a tad steep for an hour. Next issue I had is with park tickets. Before I have stayed and paid for one days entry, and got the second day free entry as I was stay at one of the resorts hotels. When I was checking the week before to ensure that everything was okay, I was informed that I only had the one day in the park. I then had to purchase another two day pass for the other days that I was staying. Total cost for park tickets for the three of us amounted to £219. Whilst walking around the park I noticed that I could have brought a season ticket for three of us for £174. At no time was this explained to me by the salesman at Merlin entertainments. I then spoke to reception at the hotel, who told me that there was nothing that that they could do, apart from cancel my tickets. This would have left me with no entry into the park for the remaining days. I was pointed in the direction of the box office, and they would sort this out for me. After finally getting to the box office and explaining this ticket problem, I was told by the lady that it was basically my fault as it was very clear on the website. Even though booking the two day pass was talking to a Merlin salesmen, and at no stage did they say that it would be cheaper to purchase a season tickets. Asking for customer service I was told that I was. Poor service as nothing was offered as compensation for being nearly £50 out of pocket. Just seems that they are lacking in looking after their customers and are just after your money. Thinking twice before going ever again.

We went on a Saturday and while it felt like there were less people in the park overall, the queues were still ridiculously long because not only did you have to stand far apart in the actual queue but they were leaving rows/seats in the carriages empty and unloading one carriage at a time when they have capacity - especially for oblivion - to unload 3 at once. You also have to wear a mask but only for the actual ride however, and there's nothing to stop you taking it off your face once the carriage moves away... you don't need to wear one around the park.
People were getting very aggy about others not standing 2m behind them in the queue even though they had people queueing on their side on the other side of the fence so my advice to you is, if you're concerned about people getting too close, Do. Not. Go to a theme park!
We didn't manage to get on many rides at all in the space of 7 hours which is quite a disappointing feeling after having driven there for 2 hours.
We managed to get on Wickerman twice - absolutely brilliant. Alarming to watch the wood/bolts wobble while you queue under it though...
They randomly closed rides (we assume, to sanitise them?) But Smiler and Rita seemed closed for a majority of the day. Thirteen never opened at all.
You can take your own food and drink which would save a lot of costs but their food kiosks are mostly open.
We did have a 15 min walk to the theme park as the mono rail isn't open no doubt because they can't manage the sanitation of it. The skyride is open though.
Overall an enjoyable day once you eventually get on an actual ride. It'll be more enjoyable once you dont have to distance/wear a mask/generally panic about cleanliness. There's also not much point buying any photos because err... masks.

We visited the park for 2 full days, and stayed nearby as hotels onsite were fully booked. The biggest negative for us was being on smiler when it broke down, we were on the vertical incline and left in the air for around 20 minutes, there was the general announcements of “smiler experiencing a technical fault” to inform the queue line, but absolutely zero communication to us in the air about what was going on. Everyone is different, but for us this was a really scary experience, especially with the history of smiler in the back of our minds. When we eventually came down, all we were offered was a complimentary hot drink! We gave our emails but have not been contacted at all yet. This not only took up a lot of our day, but left us with really sore shoulders where our weight had been pushed onto them for that time and in all honesty pretty scared to go on any more big rides. Another downfall was the unreal queue times, we got on about 6 rides per day, understandably it was busy but it was just crazy!!
We managed to get in the rollercoaster restaurant without a booking by just lining up, I would defo recommend going here for the experience and the food is really nice, and not much more expensive than the takeaway stands around the park.

Overall a good day out for me and my partner. Queue times can border on ridiculous and there is obviously the natural premium prices to be paid for food and snacks within the park. The pizza place is a bit anticlimactic, only a few varieties of pizza and pasta, I was expecting more variety. Would recommend for a day out, or spread over a couple of days if you want to go on every ride as queue times can be a couple of hours easy for certain rides.

My Fiancee and I stayed with our daughter for one night at the Splash Landings Hotel.

The first day was a Wednesday and was great, only a few queues and got onto most rides suitable for children within 20 minutes and most people followed Covid restrictions. The only annoyances from the park on that day was the lack of signage driving in for hotel parking. The second was the amount of people smoking/vaping in Cbeebies land. I thought there was enough staff to challenge people doing this which is just wrong in an area aimed at young children.

The hotel was nice but very expensive. Limited food options which we know is the same everywhere but £20 for an adult is extremely steep for average quality. Room looked clean until we looked under the bed which had items from previous guests.

The 2nd day lived nowhere near up to the first, a Thursday which was much busier! 30 minute wait for rides in Cbeebies land with a couple of ones you could walk straight on. We ended up leaving early because of how busy it was. I echo other peoples concerns that too many people are let in the park during a pandemic.

With no monorail working its a long walk between the hotel and the park. The side gate to Galactica was open for hotel guests at the start of the day which was great and really helpful. It cut the walk right down. We were under the illusion that this was open all day but when we went back when we were leaving at 1.30pm it was closed....why is it not open for hotel guests all day?

It isn't difficult to manage that gate to make it easier for hotel guests who have paid a lot of money for more than a 1 day stay. When we found out the gate was shut we had a 35 minute walk back to the car via the park's main entrance with a two year old which isn't really fair.

OPEN THE GATE!!!

We booked a 2 night stay in a woodland lodge 13th-15th April and have to say we were really disappointed. Firstly the covid safety measures in the park seem to be different on the rides, ie: The boats on the river rapids were sanitised after each family but the sanitisation on the roller coasters seemed to be at timed intervals.
Secondly the queue times given on the app were always incorrect, Rita stated 60 mins wait time and we were in line for approx 90 mins, spinball stated 45 minutes and we only waited 20.
The main thing though was the constant technical faults on the roller coasters, over the 2 days we waited in line for nearly 2 hours at wicker man (60 mins stated on the app) when the ride broke down. 1 hour at smiler when that broke down, 1 hour at nemesis and that broke down, Galactica was closed due to faults and Nemesis closed at 7pm instead of 8 tonight so I assume that was having problems. I’m not sure what was going on with 13 but even though the train had alternate empty rows for social distancing anyway they were also running the trains with weights in the last 3 rows of seats instead of riders and the queue was always massive.
Unfortunately when you add in the fact that Hex, Duel, Aquarium, David Williams, Dungeon are all closed due to Covid restrictions it was very poor value for money.
When we booked the stay we booked water park tickets as well but got a call a few days before we arrived that it wouldn’t actually be open, and also we were told there would be outdoor evening entertainment instead of the usual hotel entertainment but there wasn’t any at all.
The staff though were all very friendly.

Dear Savtrav18, Thank you for taking the time to review your Alton Towers Resort experience. Firstly, I would like to apologise that your day with us did not live up to your expectations. We want all of our guests to have a great experience with us and so it is disappointing to hear that this was not the case for you and your group. In line with government guidance, all rides and attractions are regularly cleaned and sanitisers at intervals throughout the day. We ask all guests to sanitise their hands before and after riding. We have introduced a number of measures following from the covid-19 pandemic. This includes enhanced cleaning on all of our rides and attractions which are done at intervals throughout the day. Please be assured all our rides and attractions have their own cleaning equipment which is stored safely away from guests view due to health and safety restrictions. The health and safety of our guests and staff is our number one priority and something we could never compromise. We are sorry to hear that you were disappointed with the length of the queues during your visit. We can appreciate that the excitement of being able to ride our attractions can be overshadowed by the wait time. It is with this in mind, we do try to do everything possible to smooth the volume by providing queue time information across the resort, via both our app and digital information boards. Although queues are to be expected, we can completely understand that not being able to enjoy all of our attractions is both disappointing and frustrating. In regards to your comments about inaccurate queue times, our queue times and queue boards are there to act as a guide rather that an accurate timing. This is due to the fact that the queue times can be affected by technical difficulties on rides or guest actions. We have a dedicated team updating our queue boards regularly to make ensure we are as accurate as possible. I appreciate this must have been extremely frustrating, so therefore please do accept our apologies for this. I do apologise that Wicker Man, The Smiler, Nemesis, Galactica and Th13teen were shut for the duration of your visit, due to the highly technical nature of our rides; there can be times when we have to take a ride out of operation for an extended period of time. During this period our engineers work tirelessly to get our rides back in operation; however they may not always be able to resolve the issue before the park closes. Once again I am very sorry for the impact this would have had on your day and I completely understand your disappointment. In regards to your comments about Hex, Duel, Gangsta Granny: The Ride, the Alton Towers Dungeon and the Alton Towers Waterpark being closed, these attractions currently cannot open under the current Government guidelines. They will re-open from Monday 17th May at the earliest. I do however apologise if you were not aware of this prior to your visit to the Resort. Should you wish to discuss your visit further, then please email us on gs.feedback@alton-towers.com with your order number/booking confirmation and a member of the Guest Excellence Team will aim to respond to you within ten days. We do hope that we can welcome you back to the Alton Towers Resort. Best Wishes, Will Guest Excellence Team Alton Towers Resort

We visited with grown up children and grandchildren on a two day pass over the Bank holiday and it was hot and very busy. Sorry, this is a really long review. We did have a good trip but it could have been so much better.
Good points.
All Staff we spoke to and entertainers were helpful, efficient and generally doing their best in-spite of the heat and crowds.
The selection and variety of big Roller Coasters is amazing. Our Grandson thought the Smiler was brilliant even after waiting for 110 minutes.
The grounds and toilets are clean and tidy and the gardens are beautiful so it is a pleasure to walk around them.

Bad points.
I know that Covid rules are hugely challenging at peak times but the waiting times of 100 or more minutes were massive and many of the big rides closed during the afternoon. Staff were apologetic but didn’t seem to know why. This just increased the pressure on the rides that were open. This level of wait can be distressing for children, our grandson needed the bathroom after an hour queuing but managed to hold on until the ride was over otherwise he and my son would have had to leave the queue.

Other reviewers have advised buying fast track passes but these sell out quickly. I wonder whether it would be better to charge more for entry and reduce the number of visitors so that you have a chance of getting on 3/4 of the big attractions without having to queue for 5 hours? Or have a booking system with an allocated time slot then people would be using other attractions/shows/Shops instead of standing in queues.
The food outlets were also extremely busy, waits of an hour required even for the venues selling food to eat outside. It seemed that there were too many people in the Park.
I couldn’t find refill points for water bottles, a major requirement on a hot day and provided as standard at festivals. It may be that the cold water from taps in the toilets was ok to drink but this isn’t always the case. There were lots of ‘Rehydration Stations’ selling bottled drinks - all with long queues- so clarification on bottle refill is needed.
Environmental policy. Refilling bottles cuts down on waste but I didn’t see any recycling bins either. Again, a standard facility in other places.
I know Covid is making everything difficult but Alton Towers has so much going for it and yet is rated 10th in the UK so maybe some new ideas are needed.

Once again I find myself back here to update my review for Alton Towers with a new set of frustrations.

I just about managed to get an annual passholder ticket for Scarefest several weeks ahead of time. It's lucky I was able to plan ahead, but this is not an option for anyone - in any case enough has been said about the raw deal Merlin passholders get.

Our group paid £30 each (minus the passholder discount for me) just for the scare mazes. This is expensive on the top of park tickets but I understood with the prebooked entry times this would at least mean short queues. This was not the case at all. We waited 40 minutes or more for all mazes except Darkest Depths where we were lucky to be standing in the right place when they reopened after technical difficulties.

We missed our timeslot for all but the first 2 mazes but were waved through without much protest. It became entirely clear the mazes had been oversold and queues were getting worse and worse as guests were running late to their slots had to go in later, just making the problem worse over the course of the day. This is just such typical Alton Towers behaviour I'm not even surprised at this point.

My advice for the management is to get real. You have been put through the wringer at least twice this year: Once for terrible service to passholders, and another time for unfair treatment of disabled people. It is not normal for a theme park chain to get this much bad publicity. You are not an oil company or a weapons manufacturer. Have a long hard think about where your greed is getting you.

The towers have undoubtedly made huge profits this year due to government help and higher overall attendance figures. Your reputation has taken a hit but in the new year take the opportunity to give back to your customers. The way you are going currently you will burn yourself out.

I have never written a review before but felt compelled after my lacklustre experience at Alton Towers.

Myself and my partner went on the 2nd Sep from 10am, it was my first experience with roller coasters and a theme park, so I was very excited.I was expecting the park to be quieter than normal due to the restricted numbers and schools being back, but if anything there were more children/teenagers than adults. The queues seemed to be horrendously long in the morning (60-90min wait for bigger rides):as a result, we were not able to get on a ride until 1pm.
Smiler and Oblivion needed maintenance at one stage which made other rides more packed. The Wicker Man and Thirteen were also closed the whole day, which did not help the situation. It then rained heavily from 2pm onwards so we had to experience the roller coasters whilst soaking wet (obviously not the fault of Alton Towers). We ended up queuing for over an hour for Galactica in the pouring rain which was not worth it. We spotted drying machines near the pirate boat ride (can't remember what it was called) but they charged £2 to use, which I thought was a disgrace as these should have been free, considering how heavy the rain was!

My main complaint (other than wait times) would be other guests not adhering to COVID guidance. I realise this is not the fault of the theme park itself but it was concerning. Every ride we queued for,the group behind or ahead of us were not 1 chevron apart, therefore not respecting social distancing. The area near the Smiler was packed in the morning and early afternoon with people trying to queue while the queue for the ride was closed. I felt extremely uncomfortable having to walk through that area to get to the lockers. I also observed other guests vaping in the queue,I am aware that smoking is not allowed in the queue but it is not clear if vaping is allowed.

On a slightly positive note, I found
the staff really friendly and trying diligently to enforce COVID precautions. There was hand sanitiser
readily available and all staff were wearing masks appropriately. The rides we did go on were enjoyable but
never worth an hour+ wait. The best part of the trip was being able to
sit beside some ducklings and watch them as we were waiting for the queue
times to go down in the morning.

This has put me off theme parks for life, if this was a normal day. I can see why some may enjoy the park if the weather is nice and the park not
so crowded (or they buy fast pass tickets) but this experience was not for me. If I could give this experience a 0 out of 5 I would.
