This album gathers much of what elevated Roy Orbison to the top of most rock musicians' list of influences. Sure, some of this is 50 year-old stuff, but it is VITAL 50-year-old stuff. Roy began operatic rock. Every glam act to follow would tip the hat to this guy who was anything but glam himself. Every soaring rock vocalist uses Roy as the bar. Every backstreet poet emulates him. And mixed in with the great vintage tracks are more recent songs with The Traveling Wilburys. Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne all idolized Orbison. What else needs to be said about the man's place in music?
This is an excellent compilation, with Roy's all-time best known (mostly written by Joe Melson) included, with a few covers of other folk's famous tunes, too, and the price is certainly right. Drop a couple bucks and enjoy.
"My name is Oubey"
"Yeah?, Are you sure it isn't more like Oobie Doobie?"
That last line was deliverd by Robert Mitchum in the film: "Mr. Moses"...
Orbison had impact.
Although that song never made it onto our AM stations in Northern Ohio where I lived, Crying and Oh Pretty Woman did make the Charts where I lived and I've been a fan ever since.
It was even better when my favorite band, The Beatles said they were fans and actually knew him.
Years later when the band with the All-Star line-up known as The Traveling Wilbury's included Orbison and George Harrison you knew it wasn't just media talk.
As for the disc "The Very Best..." it is a great disc from many standpoints although it won't include all your favorites, it does give some beautiful versions of Orbison's work as a Singer and Songwriter, as well as a style track of how records were produced in the early Rock n Roll days thru to the 80's.
The sound quality on this disc is superb... a work done well and worthy of its title.
This compilation consists of songs from the 70s, 70s, his last album, and from his collaboration with "The Traveling Wilburys." I am VERY pleased with this collection. Although I have many of his other CDs, I have to say this ranks near the top of his "hits" CDs.
PROS: variety, sound quality, and price
CONS: ONLY if they could have added a few more songs from his last album and Traveling Wilburys' CDs.
If you are a fan, this is your Roy Orbison album.
With hits including Oh, Pretty Woman; Only The Lonely; and Crying plus hidden gems like I Drove All Night and That Lovin' You Feellin' Again you get the best Roy Orbison experience imaginable.
I love to hear his voice and have all his music.
