The second disappointing aspect came from the story line, which though smart and unique (at least for me), took too long to develop. The many 4 and 5 ratings make it sound like this movie is a gem, but I didn't see it shine.
Additionally, the cinematography was dark and confusing, mainly in Mary's apartment, where most of the action took place. Luis Gómez is a much better actor than we see here; I wonder if the director is responsible. I can't understand the reason for the husband's character, other than to show, at the very end, that Mary has learned to take charge of her life. There is never an explanation of the parallel time periods, and how Rose appears in certain photos or knew the little girl that is introduced toward the end. Last but not least, the phone where Rose's calls came in was no longer in use in the 2010's when the movie takes place.
I'm glad I only paid $2.99 for the rental.
I watched on Instant Video, so none of the awkward editing mentioned by another reviewer. The Caller is a slow-paced thriller, very reminiscent of some of Hitchcock's works. It does require that you think to enjoy the story.
If you enjoy mind bending psychological thrillers and you've seen it all, this will be up your alley.
I can honestly say that the plot is original and fits right in with any Twilight Zone inspired films.
Not quite a classic or one you'll watch more than once but the first time around is well worth the rental.
