Manor Hall. what's it all about?

Hi there. Wanted to know what you Bristolian students all think of Manor Hall, if you know anything about it. I'm thinking of putting Durdham as first (I need self carered, not too expensive and the en suite sounds good) and I'd much prefer to be in the halls, with lots of people. Manor Hall is in Clifton so it's better as it's nearer, but there's no en suite.
What's the lowdown, on the rooms, people, area, value for money? Thanks a lot!

Manor Hall, very large rooms (except in sinclair flats), cheap bar, great views over cabot tower and most importantly you can make it out of bed and inot a lecture hall in just 8minutes. Rather than the forty it takes from stoke bishop! It has a great social life, with regular formals and socials, and stunning hall drama. I've been here for almost a year now and have had such a good time i'm staying on next year in the jcr. We've got great gardens for revising in the sun and access to squash and tennis courts. The downs are just 10minutes away, sainsbury's is 5minutes walk as is clifton village. Best of all if you dont want to goto the hall bar we are very close to the corrie tap... Kitchens are shared in groups of between 5 (sinclair flats) and about 15, but they're big enough to always be able to use the cooker or whatever. The rooms all have sinks but not en-suites. Its a great atmosphere and really goodlocation in clifton village... I wouldnt go anywhere else...

Hope this helps

Manor Hall doesnt get talked about much because it isnt the best in Clifton or overall, but isn't the worst (UH) so is pretty anonymous.

Back to my original reason for posting here.

'Manor Hall. What's it all about?'

What kind of bloody stupid question is that? Its about being a halls of residence at Bristol Uni which provides self-catered accomodation in the Clifton area for around 300 people.

Arse.
I'd disagree quite strongly, its got a stunning sense of community etc etc, the reason it doesnt get talked about is because it doesnt have en-suite or brand new buildings. People just don't know about it, it does however have the biggest bar, best drama and awesome events formals etc. The reason few ppl talk about it on here is because most ppl prefer talking to people in person and being sociable in Manor, I on the other hand am just thinking of reasons not to revise.
What kind of quality are the rooms? The pictures on the website look pretty awful- but that might be because they're just bad pictures? What kind of state is the whole place in?
Yeah the website is a disgrace, we (the JCR) are currently making a new one which should be coming online within the next couple of weeks. The main building rooms, are a bit spartan, but all have brand new central heating, and very quickly become home once you've put all your stuff in it. Some areas are old fashioned, but thats because its in a 1930's listed building. Some of the rooms lack carpets and have parquet floors, but a couple of rugs and slippers overcomes this. The rooms are LARGE for those in halls of residence (about 4M by 6M ish) in sinclair house, the rooms are smaller but there is a kitchen/living room to make up for it. Also there is a very large TV room, with widescreen TV, table tennis etc, and a good size bar.

A_nonny_mouse (nice name btw, it took me a moment to get it!), you don't happen to have a picture of your room in Manor Hall do you? I'm pretty sure I want to put it down as my first choice, but the pictures on the website completly put me off. It makes it look so depressing.

If anyone hasn't seen it...
Lmao! Have no idea why that pic made me laugh! but hey, you can always brighten it up yourself with pics & stuff.

Yeah, I laughed when I saw that pic for the first time too. There's just something about it...

It looks like a Puritan homestead.
The rooms do look really depressing on that website, they are a lot better than that. Some people have made their rooms really good with hangings, stuff on the ceilings and all sorts of other things, unfortunately u picked the owner of a fairly boring room to ask... (I have no flair for interior desogn whatsoever... I'm a historian not an artist) However here are some pictures of my room I hope they help

Mmm yeap looks big! Thanks a lot for those!

I've always wanted a massive sheepskin rug so... maybe my rents could be convinced in to that if I got a wooden floor, Wahey!

Right, think it's now officially time I stop half doing Mechanics papers/ messing around on TSR and myspace and get some sleep!

:goodnight
yeah the rooms in the main buildiong are big, the ones in sinclair house are smaller and the ones in the other annexes vary dramaticly from huge to small. But i'd get the sheepskin rug anyway

The biggest bar? Come on, now, that's not even close to true! It's definitely much smaller than the Wills and Durdham bars, and probably smaller than Hiatt Baker and Badock as well. Although I will agree that the drama I have seen at Manor was very good.

I stayed with a friend in Manor recently. As far as I could see, here were the pros and cons:

Pros:

* Nice building, seemingly good atmosphere.

* Attractive bedrooms, and my friend's had a stunning view.

* Good location and generally nice area.

* In corridors, rather than flats, which is more sociable.

Cons:

* Kitchens shared between 18 people, but little bigger than a Durdham kitchen, which is shared between 6.

* Bathrooms were a bit too communal for my liking. Rather like being at boarding school, and you'd have to take all your stuff with you every time.

* Tiniest bed I have slept in since I outgrew my cot when I was 2. Seriously, what on earth are they playing at?? It's not as if they're lacking space. I'm sure even the beds at University Hall are bigger than that, and the rooms there are tiny. Do not even think about trying to fit two people in a Manor Hall bed. If you have a boyfriend or girlfriend, or are anticipating having company at any point , don't apply to Manor! In Durdham I can share a single bed with a girl friend (i.e. a platonic friend, so no cuddling up or spooning involved) with relative ease. In Manor I could barely fit in the bed by myself!

I'm 6' 2" and havent had any trouble fitting 2 into my bed.... nor to the best of my knowledge has anyone else.
And I'm sorry it may not be the biggest bar, but then i've never been bothered to walk all the way to stoke bishop to check their bar sizes!

Well in that case why say it has the biggest bar if you just don't have a clue?

The beds in Manor are fine lengthwise, but they're ridiculously narrow. They're a good foot narrower than my bed in Durdham.

They can't be that bad can they?!

I'm over six foot with broad shoulders and I love my double bed at home. Stop scaring me!
