Freed after a lengthy term in a juvenile detention center, convicted child killer Jack Burridge finds work as a deliveryman and begins dating co-worker Michelle. While out on the road one day, Jack notices a distressed child, and, after reuniting the girl with her family, becomes a local celebrity. But when a local newspaper unearths his past, Jack must cope with the anger of citizens who fear for the safety of their children.

Boy A is a devastating look at whether one can or should be forgiven. While not directly based on the murder of Jamie Bulger, there's enough similarities to believe the original novel by the same name from Jonathan Trigell, was at least inspired by it. Jamie Bulger was only two years old when he was kidnapped and brutally tortured and murdered. What's even more disturbing is that his brief life was wiped out by two boys just eight years older. This caused a heated and painful debate at how to charge minors for such a brutal crime. They hadn't even hit puberty yet. Stylishly and elegantly narrated, the guilt and punishment drama about the rehabilitation of a teenager quickly has the viewer on a leash. The excellent actors, who have a pleasantly engaging nature, are partly to blame for this. Unfortunately, the big bang in the end is a very small, implausible one. BOY A had been so strong for 90 minutes up to that point though, that you're easily willing to overlook it.
The film Boy A is an adaptation of the highly regarded novel of the same name by Jonathan Trigell, a work that I found to be a fascinating read mostly because of the broken style of the narrative, not only telling a story using both the present and the past but also entering the minds of different characters and understanding their issues, getting a glimpse at their thoughts which made the reading relatively short novel a layered and constantly compelling experience. I found the novel to be such a success that it was difficult for the film version to live up to my expectations, which is especially strange for me since I'm one of the few that typically always choose…
