Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"The way it finished (by Jonathan Papelbon) was awesome. That's just an unbelievable job," (Curt) Schilling said. "That's the definition of a tough save. Very few guys can get that result. He's one of them." ... "Everything that has built up from last year has just kind of carried into this year," said Papelbon, who almost became a starter this spring after saving 35 games as a rookie. "Every year, every pitch, every inning, I get more and more confidence." - Associated Press Sports Writer Stephen Hawkins (04/09/2007)

Did you know that when Jonathan Papelbon reached the 200-saves plateau, on June 7, 2011, he was appearing in his 359th Major League game — the fastest pitcher in baseball history to reach 200 career saves — breaking the all-time record set previously by Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera, who recorded his 200th career save in his 382nd game?

Did you know that when Jonathan Papelbon reached the 300-saves plateau, on June 10, 2014, he was appearing in his 552nd Major League game, but he was NOT the fastest pitcher in baseball history to reach 300 career saves, and neither was The Hammer of God? Do you know who the one pitcher in baseball history was who made it to 300 career saves before Papelbon? [Answer]

Papelbon First Career Save | April 5, 2006 | MLB Advanced Media

On September 1, 2014, Philadelphia starter Cole Hamels pitched six-innings of no-hit baseball in Turner field. A risky call to the bullpen, Jake Diekman jogged to the mound, and did not allow a hit through the seventh. Yet another call to the bullpen, Ken Giles came in, still no hits through eight. Then Jonathan Papelbon was called in to shut it down, and did not disappoint, completing the 4-pitcher no-hitter, the first multi-pitcher no-no in Phillies history.

Papelbon Saves No Hitter | September 1, 2014 | MLB Advanced Media

Jonathan Papelbon saved 219 games while wearing a Red Sox uniform, the most games saved in franchise history, WELL ahead of second place, Bob Stanley, who had 132 saves in Boston. After being traded, Papelbon saved 123 games while wearing a Phillies uniform, the most games saved in franchise history again, breaking the mark once held by Jose Mesa, who had 112 saves in Philadelphia!
