Learning about Taya Valkyrie

Discussion

Didn’t know who she was but I recognized that she was in a LOT of “holy $#!+” videos and OMG moment compilations on YouTube where she was often involved in some really impressively violent spots and high risk moves.

So my question, now knowing more about her, how does someone like this not get the hype that other women have gotten (Saraya) coming into AEW? This seems like it should be a bigger deal 🤷‍♂️ do you think she’ll be the one to dethrone Jade Cargill? Without knowing much about her, she seems like a very valuable asset to sign, based on clips I’ve seen of previous performances. It would seem that Taya is exactly what the women’s division needs right now while the homegrown rookies like Skye and Billie gain experience and in-ring value.

I can't speak for others, but I'm extremely hyped. Ive wanted to see her in AEW since day 1.

Same boat. When she hit the stage I literally blurted out, "About fucking time." IMO AEW is exactly where Taya should be, especially given her accolades, experience, and presence. Bringing in Taya gives TK some options moving forward with Jade, which is exactly what Jade needs, and opens up other options for other members on the roster to have competitive matches for the TBS title. This is a big win for TK, Taya, Jade, and the women's division as a whole going forward.

Do you think Jade will end up going on excursion to Japan after she drops the TBS to Taya? I think it would be a great move for her career, she really seems like she wants to keep improving which is awesome.

I’m surprised to see how much on screen time she has gotten but they haven’t let her cut a promo yet? 🤷‍♂️ I want to hear what she has to say

Give it time. AEW usually gives new talent a few matches before they do any promos.

I hope so. She seems on the level of Britt and Ruby in delivering PPV caliber ultra-violent matches

WORLDWIDE UNDERGROUND BABAY!

u/EldenJord avatar

I only know of taya from her time in impact wrestling. She was always great with her promos and in all of her matches.

I think she’ll be a great addition to an already great women’s division and her experience will only help the younger and less experienced talent improve.

It's because she wasn't in WWE for very long.

u/voxdoom avatar

Yeah this is it. She didn't reach the level of Saraya there so the hype isn't as high, despite Taya being a fucking awesome hire.

She's always had a star look and presence, I really hope she gets pushed hard.

u/StoneGoldX avatar

Double that down with her coming in isn't a miracle of modern science that spits in God's eye.

She never had the WWE machine to showcase her

Yes NXT for a bit but that was NOT Taya Valkyrie.

She can wrestle any style and make her opponent look good. She bigger framed but can wrestle Lucha style

She is good on the mic and fluent in Spanish

Can wrestle heel or face

Over all the E dropped the ball in my opinion

Her problem there was that she could not be boiled down to one stereotype for easy consumption.

That last part is a very good point. WWE likes to push basic and shallow characters. Problem is that sometimes less is more and AEW has a habit of over complicating things too. Hard middle ground

Wera Loca loosely translates to Crazy Blonde

TK should just turn her loose to let her be just that. Let her be the one to end the streak to free Jade to move up the card and build to a Taya vs Stat program that would burn buildings down

Edit: meant to also say. Use the loss to move Jade to the “Outcast” stable. Have her pull the I am a star and thats who I run with type deal

Wera is slang for white person or white girl. So it translates to Crazy White Girl.

We've been conditioned to expect a wrestler to have a "thing" even if it isn't necessarily a gimmick so I can see how she didn't really fit in with WWE. I'm optimistic but not totally getting her persona just yet. When she came out rapping and dancing I thought she was another rapper wrestler but I don't think that is the case.

I went down the rabbit hole, too, OP and thoroughly enjoyed what I saw. But then I remembered when people were speculating on who Jade’s opponent would be and a number of posts said “Anyone but Taya V.” Why the hate? That woman was hella entertaining and I’m really looking forward to seeing her.

[deleted]
[deleted]

Perhaps because they expect her to lose to Jade still, and nobody wants to see Jade put over a real tough competitor like Taya in another 5-6 minute match that doesn't elevate anyone? I don't know. But I'm hoping they actually start letting those matches go and demonstrate what both of them can really do. But I'm worried the only thing they will give us is maybe a kick out of Jaded without anything else.

u/Singer211 avatar

Most people that I talked to are more concerned that she’ll just get beaten by Jade right away and have her momentum stopped.

It’s not like it hasn’t happened before after all.

Yeah, this a very good point

More replies

Personally I would like Jade to lose to either a homegrown AEW talent or an Indie darling but I like Taya so I don't mind her beating Jade.

Maybe bad mic skills? We have yet to hear her cut a promo but she had a match on rampage with a ramp interruption by the TBS champ on her first night booked to compete 😂 I dunno I’m a bit skeptical of that. She seems like a great wrestler I’m super stoked to see her compete with other go-hards. Taya VS Ruby VS Britt Baker would be an absolute bloodbath. We’d need Moxley as guest referee just for more blood he’ll just start bleeding for no reason 😂

u/guvan420 avatar

She’s a big, talented, attractive woman. Someone you build a brand around. Remember what happened to Roman(or hogan or cena or anyone who stays at the top long enough)People can’t stand when someone is shoved down their throat. Even if it is warranted. Everyone fantasy books their own stuff, everyone has their own idea of how wrestling works. Who should drop what to who, who should turn heel when…If any company sticks with anyone long enough, you’ll eventually lose everyone because you’ll hit the point where you eventually ruin everyone’s fantasy booking.

Taya's mic skills at least in Spanish are some of the best. Her work in AAA is quite entertaining.

Bwahaha!

I *screeched* with happiness when I saw Taya. I'm SO SO SO happy she's in AEW, I loved her in Lucha Underground, I love seeing her in AAA and I love how close she is with the Lucha Bros. I think this is one of the best signings they could have made for the women's division and aew and I'm so so so so so excited to see what she does.

She is my all time favorite female wrestler. She can fight just about any style and she can absolutely hold her own against any competitor, including men. I am so happy she is finally getting more mainstream attention and hope they showcase her unbelievable talent.

Been hoping she'd be all elite since day one

Would love to see her and Johnny Elite/Mundo/Morrison back together wrestling.

I'm watching AEW more now to see Taya Valkyrie. She is awesome.

I honestly think because she IS all that she is she may be the one to dethrone Jade.

The more casual fans will know who she is soon enough.

how does someone like this not get the hype that other women have gotten (Saraya) coming into AEW?

Saraya came in known from being in the biggest wrestling company in the world for the past 10 years on national television to millions of casual wrestling fans every week. Taya is a workhorse who has traveled the world making her name with her biggest accomplishments in Impact and AAA. Diehard wrestling fans know her and have followed her career but those millions of kids wearing "Hustle Loyalty Respect" tshirts between 2012-2022 have never heard of her.

u/MOXISGOD avatar

Her and Jamie’s eventual match is gonna be awesome

u/BestCassidy avatar

Worst case scenario, she’s good for the roster depth.

Best case scenario, she is the missing piece for the division and gives everyone their best match.

Definitely a great signing. I’d be fine with her going over Jade and being a workhorse champ.

Edited

She didn’t get the hype cus she wasn’t retired for several years, and she isn’t coming off a fed run. For whatever reason, you either need to be the next coming of Christ in terms of skill or an ex fed to get any attention.

u/sourestpatchkid avatar

Imagine saying fed in 2023 unironically lol

Ima impact fan, she’s held it down here for years. Phenomenal in ring, amazing character, her time in Lucha underground was sick too, especially with her husband Johhny Hollywood, elite, impact, Mundo ect.

Hoping she gets some good stories lines here & she left impact a couple years ago for the fed only to be completely misused. She can really bring a lot of tenacity to the roster, she’ll put up a great fight against Jade forsure. #DEATHDOLLZ

u/lordcarrier avatar

Ive seen some people Impacts say she went through motions in her latest Impact run.

Hmmm, I’ve really enjoyed death dollz as tag champs for the past couple months, her & rosemary are always a lot of fun & Taya is probably gonna die to a demon she’s been lying to this whole time next episode. Not everyone’s cup of tea but impacts supernatural storylines are some of my favs

u/lordcarrier avatar

I will give them props for managing to give Havok a character, even if in the beginning seemed forced but managed to get over with the crowd

It was really wonky at first, especially when they just smashed Taya & rosemary together when Taya came back, very forced & their chemistry was off. Gave it a couple weeks & they got their groove, I actually ended up loving Havoks rework, Jessica is a ton of fun & havok seems really happy. Sad to see it come to an end, excited for Havoks return!

Saw her debut live. She definitely had that "it" presence with the crowd. Her energy and charisma was noticeable. Her debut match was a squash but I liked her as a challenger to Jade. Would love to see her and Jade get a real program, even if Jade has to win, let them have a full match where it's back and forth. The biggest detriment to Jade's story/progression has been everything is a squash. I thought her PPV match with Athena would have at least been a long one...

Also, I realized she's John Morrison's wife... where has he been. I always thought he was destined for stardom in WWE.

I said a few days ago that if Taya came in, she'd eventually be part of the Outcasts. Jade is Homegrown.

MY introduction to Taya was Lucha Underground, where she met her husband, Johnny Name du Jour (because he changes it wherever he goes). WWE dropped the ball with her, and the kiss of death was putting her with Robert Stone and his jobber stable. Should've gone to the main roster, and that was a blown opportunity.

I'm SUPER stoked for Taya. She's AMAZING.

This is It. Nevermind that AAA sells out 2000 seat rodeos weekly, and GCW hasn't come close to that

u/dwankyl_yoakam avatar

lmao What a bizarre flex. I think GCW blows but I don't get the impression they're really trying to make inroads in the American rodeo market :D

Well you see... Back in the day..

American wrestling used to do shows are rodeos all the time

u/dwankyl_yoakam avatar

They still do.

Yep and never mind that Impact is the third biggest wrestling company in the States (even if it is a DISTANT third)

which women came from ROH/PWG/GCW or Japan and got massive hype in AEW?

She looks like a million bucks. Jade has done all she can do. You know what to do Khan Man.

April 7th battle of the belts I’d like to see a time limit draw between these 2. Ends the winning streak but not the undefeated streak. Jade and Taya both gain credit and sets up a rematch at DoN. Jade knows she has competition so she can cut promos on getting better before she retains. Hopefully Stat is ready to come back after that and maybe wins belt at FD.

Also curious if Taya would join outcasts. Homegrown has the numbers and feels like outcasts need 1 more big name.

u/dwankyl_yoakam avatar

Please no. I like Jade just fine for what she is but she's still at the point of doing fully rehearsed matches, which there is nothing wrong with but I have zero confidence she could do a time limit draw match without awkward pauses and botches galore.

I'd also be really hesitant to put the belt on Statlander right away. As much as fans love her she's just so injury prone and is still super green with promos. Let's build her back up and see where it goes.

She has the longest title reign in Impact! history at 377 days. She’s a hell of a wrestler and great crowd worker.

Also Married to Johnny (Morrison) (Blaze) (Caballero) (Elite) (Fusion) (Hardy) (Impact) (Mundo) (Nitro) (Onyx) (Spade) (Superstar)… however you know him lol

Taya is tight with the Lucha Bros and friends with the Bucks. The main reason she held off of AEW was because for her, like many, WWE was the dream. Instead of putting this workhorse into action right away, she was in endless promos that went nowhere in NXT.

Impact is fairly well-known for paying its talent very little money. I'm guessing the average Dark match pays more than most Impact appearances. Impact gives people TV time and a lot of creative, freedom, however. You'll often see Impact wrestlers on the indy circuit, using that greater name recognition for bigger paydays.

For Taya, I'm guessing that Tony Khan finally saw the roster shift he wanted with ROH being a regular thing, which opened up some space at last on Dynamite (and potentially the new show, whenever it debuts.) She's a fine promo and character worker, she hits hard, and is solid in the ring. Not at Shida levels or anything, but she's quite good and can work different styles.

u/X-OManowar avatar

Loved her in Mexico as well. She is Johnny Morrison's wife as well.

She's been my number one get since day one. I would love her to take the belt off of Jade. She's got the talent, the look, the charisma. She is the total package.

I am beyond hyped for her. She is a cherry on top of a women's division that has grown so much and become my favorite part of every AEW show.

u/BaldDad666 avatar

Been following her for a long time. Super happy she's in AEW. I'm gunning for her to be in contention for the TBS title, I believe she'd be the best-fit to elevate the title, and possibly be more present for a mid-card champion.

Funnily enough I saw the same matchup as her Rampage debut in May last year, against Ava Lawless, they tore the house down.

Saraya is a bigger name than Taya.

You’re going to hype the bigger name because with that name comes more eyes.

You’re gonna talk more about Wonder Woman and Storm more than you are Starfire and Jubilee

The biggest stage she’s been on is Impact and no one watches Impact, sadly. NXT had her for a year and did less than nothing with her.

She just hasn’t been in a position to be showcased enough for her to have enough hype behind her. It’s a shame, she’s one of my absolute favorites and I’ve been waiting for her to show up on AEW basically from the start.

I think she may be the one to end the streak. Jade has expressed interest in spending time in Japan and seeing as there’s someone else (Brian Danielson) that not only wants to go to Japan but also trains with Jade I think now would be the perfect time to make that happen. It’s their turn to be missed by us the fans.

It takes two to violently tango. She is great and definitely going to change the division if they use her right.

u/lordcarrier avatar

Taya has experience in carrying wrestlers who have less experienced than her and being as green as Jade(Kamille)

Her debut was the first I've seen of her. Knowing nothing about her I'm interested to see what she brings to the table

u/heavyarms3111 avatar

The amount of time that AEW spends hyping up new acts is based on how recognizable they are to the mainstream/WWE watchers. More people knew Saraya’s story from her time in WWE which included a mainstream movie about her journey to wrestling for WWE. Even if Taya is better in the ring she’s currently less recognizable. Hopefully they change that.

Taya is extremely credible enough to dethrone Jade. Taya can also help Jade show off her wrestling skills. It’s pretty hard for Jade to get technical with opponents so much smaller than her. Taya Vs Jade should be some amazing wrestling

What I want now personally is Johnny Elite and Taya to have a mixed tag match against Adam Cole (BAYBAY) and Dr Britt Bater (DMD). Both insane men and women who have done some crazy wtf moments

Find her work from Lucha Underground. That's where I became a fan of her.

She's really talented. She was wasted big time in WWE, which is definitely a surprise because no one is ever wasted in WWE.

When she came out I was surprised at how big she is.

She was eye to eye with Jade whereas the majority of the women’s roster she has squashed up to now is nearly a foot shorter. Excited to see what she gets to do.

Yeah I didn't really know how tall she was either. So far it's rare for someone to be that close in height with Jade and so far only KiLynn King has been the taller one in a Jade match.

u/conradknightsocks avatar

Taya's about as tall as Statlander, maybe a smidge shorter. Nyla Rose was pretty close to Jade too.

This could be a really solid signing. Hopefully the women’s division can start getting better stories, and more TV time.

Shes one of those wrestlers that just looks like a star as soon as she comes out. Just in general aura.

Shes not a super worker in the ring but shes good enough. And shes an excellent promo.

And as you say shes great in plunder matches.

Because her best stuff is/was in TNA and AAA and if you don't like that company, no matter how much you argue for it, random dude will tell you it doesn't matter because it wasn't WWE.

u/Stive423 avatar

So I feel like Saraya got hyped more because of the platform she had prior as opposed to Taya. If you ask me Taya’s arrival had me more hype. Maybe we’ll even see Johnny Dynamite one time! If not idc I’m still hype Taya is here and I’m looking forward to that Upper Deck AEW New Arrivals Card to drop!!

I really like her. I actually also really liked her in NXT and I was disappointed that she didn't do better there

My favorite thing about her honestly is her backstage stuff. I'm an Impact fan, and during the pandemic(?)wrestlehouse time when her and Rosemary got together, she legit became one of my absolute favorite female wrestlers(along with Rosemary)

Plus her outfits are 🔥🔥🔥

Really disappointed she didn't get what she deserved in wwe, so I'm interested to see her in AEW.

I still think that Statlander will dethrone Jade, but Taya is a strong contender

My wife said she looks like Pink with Stan Smith's jawline and it's all I can think about when watching her lol

She’s like pink with gina carano’s jawline lol I almost made the same comparison that’s funny

My wife genuinely doesn't like watching wrestling so her insults are on point when it's on lol

This kind of taps on one of my biggest AEW criticisms. Taya is amazing, but to an average watcher, they don’t know who she is. There needs to be better vignettes and teases leading into debuts so people can learn these wrestlers and pop bigger when they debut versus them just showing up.

Aside from that, i’m very excited to add her to a women’s division that could use some more talent. She’s a great addition.

If they have vignettes and teases leading into the debut the debut isn’t as special as someone showing up. That would be like telling a kid what his Christmas present is as you stick it under the tree. Sure he’s excited for what he’s getting but you’ve completely wrecked the surprise

u/Embarrassed-Season78 avatar

I’d agree if the casual fan knew some of these folks from less watched promotions. Instead its just a random new wrestler, and some may feel lost when more extreme fans pop for them.

I understand your pov though and respect it.

So last week when the open challenger was dropped many many people claimed she would be the one to show up and to them the surprise was great

To those who don’t know who she is now that she showed up will infer from the pop of others that she is a big deal and will google her and find out and then be excited

To the rest who just watch and enjoy what’s on tv will find out in the coming weeks and decide themselves how they feel.

End result you get as much out of it as you put into and want to get. My wife has no idea who she was but her enjoyment of the episode was not lacking because of it.

u/Embarrassed-Season78 avatar

Pretty nice your wife will watch. Mine avoids it like the plague. I get what your saying though 💪
