Winds of change: UK offshore wind sector breaks records

In 2023, the UK offshore wind industry achieved record-breaking electricity generation, with offshore wind powering half of all UK households

In 2023, the UK offshore wind industry achieved significant milestones according to The Crown Estate’s UK Offshore Wind Report.

Highlights include a record-breaking 49TWh of electricity generated by offshore wind, equivalent to powering half of all UK households.

The sector’s contribution to the UK’s total electricity generation rose to 17%, up from 14% in the previous year.

Additionally, UK waters now accommodate 43% of all European offshore wind capacity, indicating the nation’s substantial share in the European market.

Scotland‘s Seagreen windfarm, the largest offshore wind project in the region, achieved full operational status in 2023, adding substantial capacity to the national grid.

Meanwhile, the commencement of electricity production at Dogger Bank, slated to become the world’s largest offshore wind farm, marks a significant step forward in the sector’s expansion.

Gus Jaspert, Managing Director, Marine, The Crown Estate, said:  ”2023 was a landmark year for the UK offshore wind sector as it generated record levels of green electricity, enough to power half of all UK homes and continued to grow the pipeline of offshore wind farms despite challenging economic conditions.

“But the year also marked a step change across the industry in the approach needed to accelerate growth within the sector.

“At The Crown Estate, we’ve been working with others to put in place a host of new measures to deepen collaboration, enhance evidence and data, forward plan, resolve system issues, unlock onshore opportunities and increase pace.”
