Wyoming. My father was an FBI agent and I was a bureau kid, which is similar to being an army brat. You tend to spend your time with other bureau kids and get transferred around a lot, though, I fared better on that front than many others.
One positive aspect of this lifestyle is that you can’t help but absorb an enormous amount about the FBI, CIA, Special Forces, etc. Like most young boys, I was endlessly fascinated with talk of chasing criminals and, of course, pictured it in the most romantic terms possible. Who would have thought that all this esoteric knowledge would end up being so useful?
I came into writing from kind of a strange angle. When I graduated from college in the late eighties, I had the same dream as everyone else at the time—a corporate job, a nice car, and a house with lots of square footage.
It turns out that none of that really suited me. While I did go for the corporate job, I
drove a beat-up Jeep and lived in a tiny house in a so-so Baltimore neighborhood. Most of the money I made just kind of accumulated in my checking account and I found myself increasingly drawn to the unconventional, artistic people who lived around me. I was completely enamored with anyone who could create something from nothing because I felt like it was beyond me.
Enter rock climbing. I’d read an article on climbing when I was in college and thought it looked like an incredible thing to do. Someday, I told myself, I would give it a try. So one weekend in the early ’90s, I packed up my car, drove to West Virginia, and spent a
weekend taking lessons. Unknown to me at the time, this would be the start of an
obsession that still hangs with me today. I began dating a girl who liked to climb and we decided we wanted to live somewhere with taller rocks and more open space.
Moving to Wyoming was the best decision we ever made. The place is full of the most amazing people. You might meet someone on a bike ride and find out they were in the Olympics, or climbed Everest, or just got back from two months trekking in Nepal. In a roundabout way, it was these people who made it possible for me to write a novel. They seemed to have no limitations. Everything was possible for them and I wanted to be that type of person, too.
I was working for a little bank in Jackson Hole, spending my days making business loans and my afternoons and weekends climbing. For some reason, it finally occurred to me that I’d never actually tried to be creative. Maybe I could make something from nothing. Why not give it a shot?
My first bright idea was to learn to build furniture. That plan had some drawbacks, the most obvious of which being that I’m not very handy. It was my wife who suggested I write a novel. It seemed like a dumb idea, though, since I majored in finance and had spent my entire college career avoiding English courses like the plague. Having said that, I couldn’t completely shake the idea. Eventually, it nagged at me long enough that I felt compelled to put pen to paper. Eight months later, I finished Rising Phoenix and about a year after that I managed to get it published.
The success of Rising Phoenix and my subsequent books has allowed me to make my living as a writer, which isn’t bad work if you can get it. Other than that, my life hasn’t changed all that much. Aging elbows have forced me to replace climbing with backcountry skiing and mountain bike racing. I got the not-so-smart idea of restoring an old pickup to replace the dying Jeep. And, I still live in Wyoming...

Washington was an operating environment that didn't reward loyalty and courage. It rewards treachery and self-interest. Adapt or die.
Enemy at the Gates is a tough one to love or hate. It explores the culture of corruption in DC. Who can you trust?
Book #20, there's a new president in the White House, Anthony Cook. There's also a high-ranking mole in DC who has access to sensitive information and is looking into trillionaire, Nicholas Ward who along with his scientists is working on innovative research for a vaccine. Mitch must protect the man while using him as bait to find the mole. At the same time rescue the scientists from a local warlord. I do like the Uganda jungle setting, a nice change. The story is action-packed and fast-paced as you would expect from this series.
Again, you will either love or hate the ending that you won't see coming! Highly recommend Mitch Rapp series, but don't start with this one.

In a series that is so full of action, Kyle Mills brings Mitch Rapp back for another sensational story. Having taken over with the passing of Vince Flynn, Mills had big shoes to fill, but has done a sensational job continuing this series yet again. When the world’s richest man is threatened, Rapp is sent by a new president to protect him, as well as learn who is leaking intelligence from the CIA. It will be one of the most harrowing missions Rapp has had to face, forcing him to wonder if he is ready to call it quits once and for all. Another winner that has me realising that there are some authors who know how to pick up the thread of a series and not ruin its momentum.
With the election of a new president, America is in for a sobering future. Anthony Cook has his own ideas on how to run things and does not allow others to shape his opinions. This includes well-established CIA Director Irene Kennedy or her prized operative, Mitch Rapp. Both have been whispered about through the hallowed halls of the White House, but Cook is ready to stop that and show that he holds all the power.
Kennedy brings some startling concerns to the president, that there is someone within the Agency scouring through sensitive intel and providing it to America’s enemies. The crux of the data leaks relate to Nicholas Ward, the world’s richest man. His work in the pharmaceutical field could change the lives of many, but if he falls into the wrong hands, there could be serious repercussions. President Cook agrees and allows Mitch Rapp to head out, in hopes of protecting Ward on the other side of the world.
In Uganda, Rapp is tasked with finding and keeping Ward out of harm’s way. However, there will be issues, as a ruthless warlord has his eye on the man and all that he could bring in the form of riches. Rapp will have to struggle through unfamiliar terrain to protect Ward and get to the bottom of what has been a secret laboratory that possesses Ward’s scientific work, all while remaining off the radar.
With no time to lose, Rapp must stay one step ahead and work with his skeleton crew, all while remaining in the shadows. Kennedy is relying on him, though it will be Rapp’s own intuition that propels him forward in this mission. No one is safe, least of all those who are not used to the tactics of cutthroat child soldiers in the jungles of Africa. Will Rapp finally realise that it is time to walk away, or does someone have a more drastic means by which to end Rapp’s career? A chilling story that keeps the reader guessing throughout.
I’ve enjoyed the Mitch Rapp series from the beginning and my curiosity has never waned. When Vince Flynn passed on, I was sure things would come to an abrupt halt, but Kyle Mills was able to take over the reins and keep things moving. He has done a marvellous job at seamlessly creating a new tangent in the series without losing the flavour that Flynn brought to his thrillers. While Rapp has surely aged and become more of a family man (unheard of, usually), there is still a lot of spark left. I have no complaints!
Rapp continues to dazzle in this piece, proving that he is both a force to be reckoned with and a highly entertaining character. His backstory long ago faded into the horizon, but he continues to develop effectively, including a makeshift family that only adds to his worry. Rapp proves to be gritty and soft hearted at the same time, though his questioning of missions and decisions has never waned. It will be interesting to see where the series will go from here, though I am sure Mills has some interesting choices to make before long.
In a genre so full of rough and tumble characters, Mills has to differentiate Mitch Rapp from many of the others who are covertly out there saving the world. He has done so, using strong writing and a great narrative to keep the reader intrigued throughout the process. Unique settings and strong characters help to keep the reader coming back, as well as utilising great character backstories throughout the process. While the series has lasted many years, one can only wonder where Kyle Mills will take it, or if it is time to branch off. I am eager to see what’s next or how revelations within this story will impact future Rapp publications.
Kudos, Mr. Mills, for another great piece. I am eager to see where you will take us in the coming years!

I first read Vince Flynn in 1997 and thus I'm spoiled. Kyle Mills is nowhere near Mr. Flynn's writing ability. 0 of 10 stars

ENEMY AT THE GATE (Mitch Rapp Book #20) by Kyle Mills is once again my “favorite” book in this series! Action-packed and fast-paced as the previous books in the series, this new book also includes worldwide political intrigue played by billionaires and autocrats as intricate as a chess game with the common man as their pawns. If for some reason you have not read this series yet, this book is easily read as a standalone and a great place to jump in.
Mitch Rapp is trying to find a new normal and balance in his life. He is working on recovering from the damage done to his body and rehabbing and strengthening with long-distance cycling. He is also finding he is more at home and happier with Claudia and Anna in South Africa on their vineyard than in their home in the United States.
As he decides if he is out of the game for good, Irene Kennedy pulls him back in with a meeting between the new President, Anthony Cook and the world’s first trillionaire, Nicholas Ward when Ward’s research compound in Uganda is attacked and destroyed and the fate of his most valued scientists in unknown. Mitch has his reservations about the new administration, but Nicholas Ward hires Scott Coleman and his team and with Mitch along at point they enter the Ugandan jungle for a rescue op.
This is just the beginning of an intricately plotted thriller that pits Mitch against a terrorist with a God complex and an army of drug fueled followers in the Ugandan jungle, a CIA mole at the highest level and a new President and First Lady with dreams of an autocratic dynasty.
I am a Mitch Rapp Ambassador and love the whole series, but this book was a tour de force by Kyle Mills. He is able to emotionally mature Mitch Rapp without changing him so much that his fans would protest. The plot of this thriller not only keeps you turning the pages, but also makes you think and question the world order today of power and money, morally, politically, and scientifically. There are enough open-ended questions and powerful and dangerous people left for Mitch to be busy for quit a few more books and nothing could make me happier.
I highly recommend this new Mitch Rapp thriller!

This is another book in the Mitch Rapp series in which Kyle Mills brings a deft, knowing touch to Vince Flynn's characters for a superlative outing.
I will say I considered giving the book 4 stars rather than 5 because it gets the Saudi-US energy situation (one of the key motivations) so wrong. The US does not, and has not for years, depended on Saudi oil--we produce most of our own. US oil imports come primarily from Canada, not SA.
The other obnoxious bit is categorizing anti-vaxxers as being of a piece with Antifa members.
It's cute that one of the primary characters resembles Elon Musk.
I appreciate that the characters of the President and First Lady are unlike either the past or current president, an escape from the daily politics. The First Lady focusing on portfolio returns doesn't ring true, not because women aren't great investors (they are) but because politicians seem to have money float in their direction; they don't have to think about making money with the electric grid, defense contractors, etc.
It is so welcome to read a book--to escape--that doesn't mention Covid, vaccines, or masks. As an author, I appreciate the challenge of writing a true-to-life thriller that doesn't include what is now a past (and thus, dated) pandemic. There is nonetheless a true-to-life air of dystopia (obeying billionaire cabals over love of country) that the characters grapple with.
Setting so many scenes in Uganda and South Africa is also a welcome change. No surprise to readers of the series, the action scenes continue to be well-done and very engaging.
Finally, in a great character aside, look for how Mitch Rapp takes responsibility for the actions of the mole toward the end.
My congratulations to Kyle Mills on a superbly well-written book.
Highly recommended to thriller readers.

Easily 5 stars. I honestly think this is Kyle Mills best Mitch Rapp Novel. It would be tied with Lethal Agent by him as his best works. From the opening page to the end, you can honestly read this book in one sitting. Its Action-packed, thrilling, mysterious, suspenseful, and emotional. Very few books gets me worked up that I needed to take a break from reading to calm down. Buy this book, buy all the Mitch Rapp books. You won't regret it.

Irene Kennedy, Scott Coleman, Joe Maslik, Bruno McGraw, Mike Nash, Fred Mason, and Marcus Dumond are all familiar names to Vince Flynn fans, but are they all "good guys"? Will one of them not be in the next Vince Flynn edition? Will one of them join the ranks of Stan Hurley and Thomas Stansfield? What about the richest man in the world and the brilliant scientist who wants to change the world, both targets of a diabolical terrorist? Kyle Mills weaves all of these questions into Enemy at the Gates, as this, as usual, fast-paced novel moves from Uganda to Virginia to D.C. to South Africa and Saudi Arabia. And everything hinges on a mole high-up in the pecking order, so elusive that even Marcus Dumond can't crack his identity. Order Kyle's newest thriller to have it in September for the answers--and an ending that will shock you!

Not the same solid story I have come to expect from the series. By the end, I felt like there was more to the story left untold. Like maybe 75 pages were missing. Rapp wouldn't have left things like that. This might be a setup for the next book. Good enough book. Just not what I've come to expect.

ENEMY AT THE GATES will rank as a masterpiece if not the best novel of Kyle Mills career in the thriller genre. Superbly written with edge-of-the-seat action, it focuses on the theme of betrayal, the kind of betrayal that damages not only a nation, but the kind that hits straight to the gut, that’s the most traumatic, the deadliest to the heart and soul, and the most personal. It’s a betrayal involving those caught in the middle and who suffer the repercussions of the most powerful players in the world squaring off against each other.
The storyline opens with an assessment by Mitch Rapp and CIA’s Irene Kennedy of the condition of the nation after a government traitor took out the nation’s electrical grid for a month. It triggered a domino effect of hundreds of thousands of dead Americans from cold, violence, and absence of medical care. Exploding substations caused devastating fires and the world economy collapsed without its most powerful engine - us.
Drawing an analogy to our own current elections, a young ,charismatic president has been elected. Damn those rich and intelligent men who are trying to make the world a better place. Stop them, or kill them. Sadly there seem to be people who think like this and not only in fiction. Enemy at the Gates by Kyle Mills is one of the best books he has written together with the last one. According to me at least. Mitch Rapp has a strange situation to deal with but he should be used to it by now. On the other hand he seems to have taken his new responsabilities serious and are actually thinking more about his family than work for once. As usual the book is well written and sadly it ends to fast. It amazes me that there still can be a fresh twist on an American president with strange ideas after all the books I have read. I think they made a great decision when they let Kyle take over after Vince Flynn.

This is the 20th in Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp series (the last several written by Kyle Mills after Flynn's death). I have read all of the previous 19 books and given every one 5 stars. In my review of Total Power (No. 19), I noted that some series lose steam after a while, but that Total Power was one of the best Rapp books. Well this novel is the one that lost all the steam. The first 100 pages were boring and then, although there were thrills and spills for the rest of the book, it was totally dissatisfying. Without giving away anything, all I will say is that what makes Rapp appealing is that he is the good guy that takes care of the bad guys. Unless Mills gets back to that formula, this series is going no where. Three stars based on seniority only.

Kyle Mills outdoes himself again with this latest addition to the Mitch Rapp saga. ENEMY AT THE GATES sucked me in immediately. And once I turned the last page I wanted more. *Needed* more. If you thought TOTAL POWER was the best in the series so far, wait until you get a load of this banger.

Kyle Mills does it again. Enemy At The Gates is yet another example of Kyle Mill's ability to blend fiction with a mix of current zeitgeist to weave a story line that is not only believable, but also leaves you wondering, when not if, will I read about this story in the headlines.

Very nice action and set-up for the next book. But the heel turn by an old friend felt out of nowhere. Like Kyle Mills is intentionally killing of Vince Flynn's characters to make room for his own.
Enemy at the Gates had a very frustrating ending, to say the least. I get it, spies change loyalty all the time in these books. But here there was no build-up, no foreshadowing in previous books where this character appeared that it would even be possible. All of a sudden, POOF! I'm working for the bad guys! And even more frustrating is that if this character would have communicated with LITERALLY ANYONE what was going on, 99% of the situations in this book (which the character said he/she didn't want to be a part of to begin with) presented would have been avoided.
Anyway. I'll read the next book in a year. But I won't be happy about it.

Thrilling-nail-biting, edge-of-your- seat thrilling!! This is an engaging espionage thriller reflecting current realities with a unique story line that blurs the lines of fiction and reality. Art imitating life for sure in this explosive installment! Startling revelations,too, of a reoccurring character adds to the suspense! Enemy At The Gates takes off where Total Power ends, and it sets up the scenario of a brave new world, not unlike our own reality now. Well done, Mr. Mills, for penning another dynamic thriller!

For the second year in a row, I have been honored to be chosen as a Mitch Rapp Ambassador and received an advanced copy of Enemy at the Gates (Mitch Rapp, #20)
I will not bother to recap the synopsis of the novel, but I will focus on a few main points.
First, I am very grateful that Kyle Mills has continued the Vince Flynn legacy. It is Vince's first novels (along with Clancy) that drew me into the genre enough that it prompted myself to start writing. Mitch Rapp could not have been left in better hands as the stories continue.
The story picks up six months after Total Power with a new political administration flexing and a world weary Mitch Rapp doing what he does best. Fighting for what is right. Which may not align the wishes of the president., but that (of course) does not stop him.
I will avoid posting spoilers, but I am glad that the main character has shown growth and it shows in his actions and thoughts. Should a character in a novel grow, change and learn over the decades? Yes! Rapp is worried about his weight, diet, exercise and family (not in that order). Perfect.
Within the first chapter I was hooked and ended up reading 85% of the novel in one sitting. The only reason I didn't finish it in one bite - I had to work the next day and get up early! (Thanks Kyle for keeping me up late! lol)
Several years ago, I was away with friends and someone handed me a glass of red wine. For a single 10oz pour, the value was about $75 (just a glass, not the bottle!) Wow! It was an incredible drink, and I treasured every sip. Same thing applies to Enemy at the Gates. I enjoyed every word and took my time to savor the story and treasure it. I know it will be at least twelve months until the next novel!
I can easily place this novel as one of my favorites in the series.
Make no mistake folks. The Mitch Rapp Legacy is in great hands with Kyle Mills and we get to reap the rewards of his efforts.

Enemy At The Gates, by Kyle Mills, is the 20th book in the Mitch Rapp series. Kyle writes amazing thrillers, and if that is what you enjoy reading, then this book, and in fact the entire series, is a MUST read for you. I highly recommend you read the books in sequential order, to get the full effect of what is happening. This book picks up six months after Total Power ends and it alludes to what can happen with some of our government agencies, officials and situations, when an incoming President has a different agenda from the previous administration.
Enter Nicholas Ward, the world’s first trillionaire and a request he has to find one of his employees who has gone missing, an employee who has been working on a vaccine that will protect the world against any coronavirus that may come our way. Can you imagine what that would do to multinational corporations and the uber wealthy who invest in them. How will they respond to protect their financial futures? Well of course this isn’t all that is going on, there is a mole in the government who is working against the rescue and that too needs to be solved and “addressed”.
Our favorite characters, Mitch, Claudia, Irene and Scott just to name a few, are brought in to help rescue Mr. Wards employee. But with this new President and his completely different outlook as to how he feels the country should be run, there are conflicts and differences as to what Mitch and friends can do. As far as books go, this one is simply fantastic. I mean it’s really REALLY good. We all know I’m a Mitch Rapp fanboy, but looking at this one objectively… IT IS AMAZING! I hate to keep saying this, but the insane number of great books in 2021 keeps making me do it… this is one of the best books I’ve read this year and potentially my favorite in the entire series.
I was in absolute suspense from the first to last page and was utterly devastated by the identity of the mole. With Kyle setting up a villain unlike Mitch has ever faced on the home front, the next few books are going to be absolutely wild.

I was fortunate to receive an ARC for this book. As a huge fan of Vince Flynn and his Mitch Rapp series, I always look forwards to the next Mitch Rapp saga. It took me two sittings to finish this one.
Because this is an advanced copy, I won’t write any details. Just know I am still processing what I read…the ending of this book blew my mind and I absolutely cannot wait for 2022 and the next installment.

Kyle Mills delivers again. Mitch Rapp is back and this time he is dealing with a president who doesn’t have his back. Anthony Cook Is an egotistical president who is obsessed with power and control. Along with his wife they are planning to run the country for the next sixteen years, and there is no way he is going to let Mitch and Irene Kennedy slow him down. A mole is discovered to have taken information on the richest man in the world, Nicholas Ward. Mitch teams up with Scott Coleman to protect Nicholas and at the same time discover the mole.
I was a little nervous as I got into this book, the first part of the book was a little slow. I was afraid that Kyle Mills had lost his touch with delivering a top notch novel within the series. The rest of the book made up for the slow start. It was an easy five star book and One of the best books I have read this year.
The characters are fantastic. President Cook is easy to hate and along with his wife, Catherine, they are a formable duo to challenge Mitch and Irene. The African terrorist Gideon Auma is sadistic, intelligent, and cunning. Along with his followers hopped up on some African drug they are a downright scary foe.
It is a Mitch Rapp novel, so you expect action. Enemy At The Gates does not disappoint. There are multiple action scenes including an assault that features the defenders using a water cannon (I won’t spoil the scene by telling you more). Where Mr. Mills outdid himself was the way he made scenes without action have the same tension and draw as the action scenes do. This was especially true near the end of the book.
It was easy to give Enemy At The Gate five stars. It lived up to the high standard Vince Flynn started and Kyle Mills has continued. This book has it all, strong characters, action, tension, and that overall let me just read one more chapter before putting it down. Not as good as a Mitch Rapp novel that is ACTUALLY written by Vince Flynn. This new guy writing it, Kyle Mills, doesn't seem to have the flair for the Mitch Rapp character. As far as books in this "series", this is my LEAST favorite by a long, long, long shot. I might even admit that I DID NOT LIKE IT, if Mitch put a gun to my head.
The plot was mediocre and the main characters not well developed. the trillionaire, Nick Ward, was a cardboard cutout rich guy who wants to save the world. Dr Chism was not a believable guy at all. The President and first lady- the Cook's- were terrible and completely overdone as "bad guys". Totally over the top.
I didn't care for the story, characters, writing or ending. If it wasn't for the fact it was a Mitch Rapp themed novel I would have put it down after 100 pages. It took me much longer to read this one than normal... but I managed to slogged my way through it. Especially since the book cost so freaking much... $28.99... I felt ripped off!
Will I buy and read another Mitch Rapp novel written by Mills. Highly doubtful- it was a very unenjoyable experience. His writing made me feel cheated out of a good story.

Every time I read a Mitch Rapp book written by Kyle Mills, I end up liking it more than I initially intend to.
Enemy at the Gates has one fatal flaw: It doesn't completely wrap up the story and Kyle Mills admits this (and has said so himself in his interview on The Crew Reviews), and I really don't like incomplete stories. In a way, this book takes it upon itself to set up a bigger and more important story and acts as some kind of introduction. Still, though, the book does have its own story and its finale is satisfactory, I believe I'd be even more satisfied if I'd read more of the previous novels.
I've said this before, let me say it again, I like Kyle Mills' Mitch Rapp books considerably more than Vince Flynn's. He makes it look easy, his work is fun, fast and feels like a written and printed summer action blockbuster. Is that a good thing?
