Set in Harlem in 1987, Claireece "Precious" Jones is a 16-year-old African American girl born into a life no one would want. She's pregnant for the second time by her absent father; at home, she must wait hand and foot on her mother, an angry woman who abuses her emotionally and physically. School is chaotic and Precious has reached the ninth grade with good marks and a secret--she can't read.

very difficult to watch. heartbreaking to think about how this is a reality for so many. precious deserves the love and happiness she dreams of.
Shot like The Office, edited like Requiem for a Dream, written like a fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen (the guy without the happy endings). To me, this movie delivered its unapologetically dark and depressing story perfectly. Humerous and never exploitative for a second, deeply human but merciless, entertaining but never soft, never sweet. I laughed, I cried, I marveled at the ingenuity, I was surprised by the plot again and again- I got everything I could possibly want from a movie. Perfection! Only the tagline is tacky.
If Mariah Carey really wanted to pursue acting seriously, she would be A FORCE

precious made me feel so many emotions. at points, it was hard for me to watch.
the editing was new for me. i didn’t mind it much, but it was off-putting at times.
however, this film was definitely eye-opening. it made me think about people who live in horrible conditions and have to endure psychological and physical abuse on a daily basis.
i also loved how raw the performances were. all of the cast had something to bring to the table. with their performances, it was easy to be taken along the heartbreaking rollercoaster that is precious.

Crazy great performances. Sometimes hard to watch but still incredibly powerful. Mo’Nique deserved that Oscar. I definitely was right in holding off on watching this for awhile cause jesus but wow, what a picture.
Sidenote: Crazy how every meme is of one of the most devastating scenes ever. Also this movie is so frequently beautifully shot it’s unbelievable. Every daydream sequence is heartbreaking in the best way. Really wouldn’t change a thing here cause everything feels so honestly added to it
