Lord Whitebait, an aristocrat, is facing serious financial difficulties. In order to pay for his daughter's wedding, among other things, he devises a plan with his butler, Spankforth, to have his most valuable painting stolen for the insurance money. This is what burglar Jim Barger is supposed to do, who is about to get out of prison. When they wait outside and see Wilfred Sapling, a plumber who has just completed some maintenance work, Whitebait and Spankforth think he is Barger. After they don't explain themselves properly, Sapling thinks he's being hired for a mundane job...
