This 2 hour tour was fabulous. Our guide (I think his name was Peter) was very informative and engaging. These volunteers provide a safe and entertaining time exploring the tunnels.
Highly recommended this tour.

Me and my sister took the longer two hour tour with our fantastic guides Trish and Mal. They made it fun and interesting with pit stops in between to rest your legs. We were shown entrance ways to the tunnels used in the war, to different markings left in the tunnels many years ago. It's worth a visit. Just make sure you book in advance.

Bought for us as a gift by our daughter who had previously visited. Emily, our tour guide was friendly, knowledgeable and interested in the history of the tunnel which showed in her delivery of the subject. We found the tour interesting and fun, helped by Emily’s input. Until my daughter had visited we had never heard of the tunnel. The history of the tunnel is quite amazing, from the initial idea through the construction to the repurpose during the war years. A highly recommended way to spend a couple of hours.

We booked in advance as we knew this was a very popular place to see in Newcastle.
From the off, our guide John was welcoming. He learnt all our names and bits of information about ourselves.
John is a fantastic guide. Very knowledgeable, engaging, and answered all our questions.
He made the two hour tour fly by with the historical significance of the Tunnels Pre-WW2, during and after.
This exceeded my high expectations.
If you're still reading this - just book the tour now!
Highly recommended!

Fascinating 2 hours, time and money well spent. I was wondering before how a walk through a tunnel could stretch to 2 hours, but John had all the local history and stories of the day planned and delivered to perfection. Thank you.

Being guided through the tunnel by Trev was like living its history. It was very dramatic when we switched off our torches in the pitch black , and he reenactment the events of a dark day in the tunnels history. We felt very excited and privileged to enjoy it.

Hi do you have to wear a hard hat ? Or is it optional ?

Hi, I am fairly certain for health and safety reasons you will have to wear the hard hat. Parts of the tunnel require you to stoop and obviously the tunnel is stone/brick. The hats are all cleaned between visitors.

My husband is in a wheelchair, would this be possible.

Thanks for your interest in bringing your husband in his wheelchair to the fantastic Victoria Tunnel. Because of the solid concrete WW2 Blast Walls, wheelchair access is restricted to the first 100 yards. If it's a foldable wheelchair we can get those around the Blast Walls, but that depends on whether the wheelchair user can walk approximately 10 yards. However, our guides are very happy to give wheelchair users a full verbal description of the Victoria Tunnel in those first 100 yards. I look forward to the time when we resume tours and if you book a tour mention at time of booking the position with the wheelchair. In the meantime keep safe and well.

Where does the tour end?

Hi and thanks for your question. Our tours all start at 55 Lime Street Newcastle NE1 2PQ and finish on Ouse Street, next to Hotel du Vin NE1 2BE (close to Newcastle Quayside).

Can you take your own camera and freely take photos? I ask because we went on similar tour in Edinburgh and photos were not allowed (i think mainly because they took one of you and wanted you to buy it).

Yes, you can take your own
camera and take pictures but it is very dark and everyone has their own flashlight so you might struggle. There is a nice walk through the Ouseburn before the tour which will take some nice photos.

How close are the quarters inside the tunnels? Would someone 6’7” be hunched over ?

Thanks for your question, the Victoria Tunnel is six foot three high with the occasional section being slightly less, so people over six foot two inches have to wear hard helmets and do have to adjust their stance to avoid bumping their head.

How far do you have to walk please and could someone who needs a stick , following a knee operation manage this. Thank you.

I think it’s 1 and a quarter miles out and the same back. The floor of the tunnel is clean dry and level. There are wooden benches half way but if you could get hold of a hunting stick that opens into a seat, it would be useful. The staff will escort you back out if it gets too much anyway.
