The cinematic interpretation of Superman is once again dividing fans following the reveal of David Corenswet in his full Man of Steel suit. While some loved James Gunn’s new version of the DC icon, others couldn’t wait to tear it down. Somewhere in between are those who just want to have fun with a few photo apps, and the result has brought Corenswet into the path of his predecessor – Henry Cavill.

Although there are many fans eagerly awaiting 2025’s release of Superman, those still not over the fact that Henry Cavill will not be playing the role again have been shouting very loudly on social media in the last couple of days. Despite that, there is a new Superman, with a new suit, and there is not much any online discourse is going to do to change that.

For this reason alone, one reworking of the image shared by Gunn – which sees Corenswet calmly pulling on his boot while an unworldly attack happens outside his window – has comically brought together the new Superman with his old counterpart. The piece of fan art by Aaron S Bailey highlights the transition between actors with a touch of humor, depicting Corenswet's Superman casually donning his boots while an evidently disgruntled Cavill's Superman looms at the window, ready for a confrontation. Check out the image below.

The artwork manages to perfectly combine the annoyance of Cavill and Zack Snyder fans with the calm and unconcerned demeanor of the incoming Superman team in a brilliantly multi-layered piece. As one of many such humorous takes on the Superman suit reveal, the attention is only elevating the anticipation for a first trailer sometime in the coming months.

The DCU is Preparing for a Fresh Start

The introduction of a new Superman is obviously not the only change happening with the franchise, as the wider DCEU gives way to Gunn and Peter Safran’s long-term plans for a new reshaped and refreshed DC project that is looking to finally emulate the kind of success Marvel Studios has had with the MCU. This means that it is out with the old and in with the new in all but a few exceptions, with Blue Beetle and certain characters from Gunn’s The Suicide Squad expected to survive the closing of the door on the last decade of DC stories.

Currently, there have been few details revealed about the master plan of Gunn and Safran other than the titles of most of “Chapter One.” The list of projects include Swamp Thing, The Authority, Wonder Woman: Paradise Lost, and The Bold and the Brave. However, Gunn has also teased that there are further projects to be announced for this phase of the DCU, but to do so now would spoil some of the surprises to be revealed in the existing list of titles.

Will Superman's iconic red trunks be in James Gunn's DCU? The debate is hot, and here's why they should be included.

The DC Universe is a franchise that should be able to print its own money considering the huge fandom of the source material. However a lack of direction in last decade has done a lot of harm, with fans never knowing exactly what to expect from one movie to the next. Even when movies have pleased critics and received generally favorable reviews from audiences, the box office results have not reflected this. The challenge Gunn and Safran face to turn this around in the coming years will be fully apparent when Superman hits cinemas on July 11, 2025.
