Synopsis

Hired killers Billy Young and Jesse Boone assassinate a Mexican general and flee to the Texas border. When Billy's horse stumbles, Jesse abandons him, and Billy encounters Kane, former sheriff of Dodge City who is searching for the murderer of his son. Kane offers to take Billy to New Mexico, where he has accepted the job of deputy marshal, to try and clear Billy of the murder charge. Once in town, however, Kane discovers that he has trouble of his own. The town boss, John Behan, advises him that there is no room for a lawman; later, dancehall girl Lily Beloit, whom Behan considers his private property, warns Kane that Behan and his associate Frank Boone are planning to kill him. Aware that Boone is the man who murdered his son, Kane refuses to leave town. Events come to a climax when young Jesse is imprisoned for accidentally killing old Doc Cushman while aiming for Kane. Kane discovers that Jesse is Boone's son and plans to use him to force a confrontation with Boone; but Billy, in an attempt to prevent the shooting, frees Jesse. Though Billy later offers to help when he learns from Lily about the murder of Kane's son, Kane knocks Billy unconscious and locks him in jail. When the shootout finally comes, both Behan and the elder Boone are killed. Kane takes Lily away to get married, and Billy becomes the deputy marshal.
