Best modern psychedelic rock bands/artists

The psychedelic rock songs on my library belong almost exclusively to The Beatles, The Doors, Led Zeppelin and Tame Impala. I’d really love some new material from modern day artists. I’ve been trying to find some that I vibe with but the Spotify playlists just don’t do it for me. Would be great to get some suggestions on artists I should listen to

Not seen anyone here recommending Kikagaku Moyo. Awesome Japanese psychedelic rock band. Would also suggest Wooden Shijps, Levitation Room and Pond.

Kikagaku is so good. Echoing this!

Love them. Sad to hear they’re not going to be making music anymore.

u/Dr_Gonzo13 avatar

Yeah it's such a pity. I was lucky enough to see them live back in 2019 and they blew me away.

u/brandonsc0tt avatar

When did they announce this?

Pond is incredible— my personal fav

u/Dr_Gonzo13 avatar

I went on and off them for a while but I saw them play back in June and they're just fantastic. Been completely obsessed with The Weather lately.

Saw them last month on their last tour. I love them so much!

For anyone that likes Wooden Shjips, I can recommend Ripley's other bands in Moon Duo and Rose City Band.

u/Dr_Gonzo13 avatar

I'd heard of Moon Duo but had no idea they were related. Thanks for the rec!

Would love another levitation room album. Love their laidback stylw

One of the best to come out of the last 10 years. Glad we caught them live in Dublin at least once. A new band to watch out for that's similar is Upupayāma.

If you can support our band we'd appreciate it!! <3

Dublin based psych / garage band.

Temples
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
Allah-Las
Gum
Babe Rainbow
Sugar Candy Mountain
Levitation Room
Holy Wave
Crumb
Unknown Mortal Orchestra
Cate Le Bon
Electric Eye
Kikagaku Moyo
Thee Oh Sees

There are so many, and they vary widely stylistically. They all draw some queues from the psychedelic era, but they've successfully created something genuinely new and interesting.

u/lizardraygun avatar

Really solid list. + The Black Angels!

When people say bands don’t make music anymore I just laugh inside!!

[deleted]
[deleted]

I need to listen to them. And yeah, I’ve only really started delving into mod psych in the past year or so, but I’ve come away so impressed with what’s out there. Regardless of what’s commercially popular, some of the best music ever is being made at all times.

u/lizardraygun avatar

If you already like those ^ bands you’d probably get into them pretty easily, their first album Passover is a good place to start. The song Melanie’s Melody is also a really groovy tune.

My big three are:

  • The Black Angels (closest to the 70s sound)

  • Thee Oh Sees

  • King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard (insanely energetic) they’ve ruined me for other psych rock.

That longer list someone made is really good!

King Gizzard is the best! 😊

King gizz are definitely the best right now

These are on the heavier side but Naxatras. They have 4 stellar albums (1st being the best imo) Mantra machine & psychlona Hills: Frid

The lazy eyes are a brand new group out of aus that bring a lot of energy with good pop songwriting

Yes I second Naxatras!

Black angels.

Definitely King Gizz 'n' the Liz Wiz. They are possibly the best functioning band at the time. Start from Mind Fuzz, Nonagon Infinity, Flying Microtonal Banana and Paper Mache Dream Balloon (+The River). These four albums and one song are quintessence of their music. But there is so much more than that. You just need plenty of time to listen to everything they made. But I bet it will be an unforgettable time.

Melody's Echo Chamber. Very tender psych pop. Start from the debut. It was mixed by Kevin Parker, by the way.

Comets on Fire. Face melting fuzzy psychedelia. Start from the Blue Cathedral.

Acid Mothers Temple & The Cosmic Inferno. Definitely start with Pink Lady Lemonade ~ You're From Outer Space. It's a Grateful Dead-esque jam psych to melt. From all their albums this is the most easy to vibe with for the newbie. If you enjoyed that, check out

Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso UFO. The same band, but insanely loud, chaotic, noisy and avant-garde. I would recommend to start with New Geocentric World and La Novia.

u/doomricky avatar

Allah Las is super good, and The Brian Jonestown Massacre is super sweet. They both carry that same sort of old sound.

Yall don't listen to Turkish psychedelic bands? :(

The Butthole Surfers are the gold standard for me. Spongle Phish

Why does no one ever speak of The Maras Volta? They are great. Also Tame Impala, and as everyone else has mentioned KGATLW is pretty much GOATED

My Morning Jacket.

This band doesn’t get enough credit. They’ve been around for a while, and i don’t know what the stipulations are for “modern”. But these guys are incredible live. Must see, if you get a chance.

King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard

Definitely listen to Ween and The Flaming Lips

Obligatory KGATLW mention, but it’s for a good reason.

Check out Slift

Depends on your definition of modern, but also check out The Heads. Everybody Knows We Got Nowhere is an absolute classic

MDOU MOCTAR!! Dude is one of the best guitarists alive rn, he plays a dessert blues style, it’s incredible https://youtu.be/iLF_eUT-sZo

Don’t forget about Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats

Boogarins is one of my recent faves, Brazilian psychedelic rock

Gizzard for sure, their song “The Dripping Tap” is a 20 minute hard psych masterpiece. You must listen.

New Mexican Psychedelia over here!

  • Rostro del Sol

  • The Risin Sun

  • La Era de Acuario

  • Los Mundos

I recommend checking it out. A new psychedelic rock scene is emerging on this side of the world. if you're interested, I leave a playlist. Spotify also has an option to translate lyrics even though there are several instrumental ones. Greetings to all!

Check out Holy Wave.

A couple I haven’t seen mentioned are Banana Gun and The Lazy Eyes. Also worth a mention is Toro y Moi. Sure he’s not psych rock but his early stuff I’d definitely psychedelic and really damn good. I listen to lots of psych rock and love me some Toro so I bet others here enjoy him as well.

Not modern but Harry Roesli has some sick psychedelic tracks and he’s from Indonesia. Also, “baby night” by sweet smoke is super sick as well.
