Victor Spinetti Obituary

LONDON (AP) - Victor Spinetti, an acclaimed comic actor who appeared in several Beatles movies, has died. He was 82.

Spinetti's close friend and agent Barry Burnett said Spinetti died Tuesday morning after suffering from cancer for several years.

Spinetti won a Tony award in 1965 for his Broadway performance in "Oh, What a Lovely War." He also appeared in three Beatles movies, "A Hard Day's Night," ''Help," and "Magical Mystery Tour."

Spinetti was born to an Italian Welsh father and Welsh mother in South Wales. He moved to London to develop his acting career, but moved back to Wales after he was diagnosed with cancer.

I worked backstage on Victors one man show in Abergavenny 21 years ago. It went well and afterwards we had a small party in my house. Next morning I am sitting at the dining table having breakfast with my wife and two year old twins. At 11am there is a knock at the door. I open the door and Victor is standing there with a bottle of champagne in his hand."thanks for what you did last night Mike" he said and came in and chatted for an hour whilst a glass of the good stuff was enjoyed. A lovely man. Victor I miss you

As an avid Beatles fan, I had a chance to meet Victor a couple of times after seeing him perform in the West End. He was so kind to me, and really enjoyed telling his stories about "the boys". He had a career doing what he loved, and it was a joy to see him perform in his later years. Thanks, Victor, for adding your stories to the Beatles legend.

I never met you Victor but my lady worked with you twice (you even let her do your makeup) and she was forever struck with your kindness, warmth, encouragement, humour and of course your talent. A special person who knew everyone and who made a difference to the lives of all who met him - what finer legacy is there to leave. A fine man. R.I.P.
