I just couldn't stop reading - a rollercoaster of action and stunningly fresh ideas (taking into account how old it is). Beautifully and skilfully written, made me think of it as a source of plenty of the brillant sf ideas I have read about and watched in the movies throughout my life. Magnificent literature.

Die Geschichte die Alfred Bester um den ungelernten Besatzungsmitglied Gully Foyle spinnt, ist (wie auch das Vorwort verrät) stark am Grundmotiv des „Grafen von Monte Christo“ von Alexandre Dumas orientiert: Foyle überlebt ein Raumschiffunglück, wird jedoch von einem Schwesterschiff derselben Firma, dass ihn entdeckt nicht gerettet. Der simpel gestrickte Mann schwört daraufhin Rache, die er mit Hilfe eines Vermögens, dass er aus dem Wrack gewinnen kann auch (teilweise) um zusetzt. Das Hauptelement, dass hier die Sience-Fiction (mehr Fiction als Sience) ausmacht und die Welt prägt, dies die Fähigkeit der Menschen dieses 25 Jahrhunderts sich rein aus Kraft ihres Willens zu teleportieren. Bester setzt einiges daran, die sozialen und ökonomischen Auswirkungen dieser (etwas sehr unrealistischen) „Erfindung“ beiläufig zu zeichnen, was ihm auch gut gelingt.

Man merkt dem Roman seine Entstehungszeit etwas an, für manche wird er daher etwas verstaubt und langsam sein. Dies ändert aber nichts daran, dass die Geschichte gut erzählt ist. Sie ist mit interessanten, teils auch heute noch originell wirkenden Charakteren bevölkert und weist einige brillanten Ideen auf. Gerade das der Roman als einer der Vorläufer des Cyberpunks gilt, macht ihn lesenswert. Wer nur gelegentlich Sience-Fiction liest sollte vielleicht wirklich andere Werke diesem Buch bevorzugen – wer aber ein Fan des Genres ist, sollte diesem Urahn durchaus etwas Zeit schenken.

Un must have pour les amateurs de science-fiction. Le roman est très bien écrit, l'intrigue se déroule sans temps mort.
Cette histoire de vengeance sur toile de fond futuriste est vraiment extraordinaire.
Les thèmes abordés sont intemporels. Bien que ce livre ait été écrit il y a 60 ans, je n'ai pas eu l'impression de lire un livre de cet âge.
Le plus difficile sera maintenant de trouver un nouveau livre à la hauteur de celui-ci.

An absolute must buy for any sci fi fan, or someone looking for a sensational read!

For what seemed like a very long time I had been looking for a book that would sweep me off my feet and keep me on the edge of my seat throughout the story. There had been so many that started well but faded, were page turners at times and overall weren't better than a solid 7/10.
I even thought that it was 'me'...maybe it was my problem and that my standards were set unrealistically high as to what feelings and thoughts a captivating book should instill....

Boy was I wrong. I stumbled upon this gem while looking for a good sci fi book and was pleased with the 4.13 rating on goodreads and plot to give it a go. Lucky for me...I was absolutely enthralled from the start. Each chapter was brilliantly written, so much so that the pace of the book kept me spellbound the entire time.

The plot is fantastic. The perfect mix of pacing, intrigue and action kept guessing the entire time.

The book that would be most similar to this is The Count of Monte Cristo, where early on in the book a man is broken only to reinvent himself in order to achieve his revenge...except this is set in the mid 25th century.

To wrap things up this is the first book that I've reviewed as I felt compelled to give something back after the experience that the book gave me.
