It might sound strange, but the reason the small village of Saranac Lake in Upstate New York started to attract tourists as early as the late 19th century was tuberculosis.

In search of refuge from the pollution of crowded metropolises, the inhabitants of the East Coast found the pristine 'fresh air' of the clean mountains to be a rejuvenating treatment or a healing remedy in a time well before antibiotics existed.

The town became famous for its health resort and center for scientific research. It was even the home of the nation's first laboratory, built in 1894, dedicated to the study of tuberculosis. The laboratory is still open to the public as a museum.

A Wellness Legacy That Continues To Thrive

Saranac Lake has preserved its legacy as an unparalleled healing destination, remaining a popular wellness retreat to this day, thanks to relaxing and revitalizing activities that suit all budgets. From couples massages to forest bathing to yoga and more, Saranac Like prioritizes wellness.

Lake Placid is as an excellent destination for thrill-seekers, while Saranac Lake's offerings are more low-key.

These destinations are only ten miles apart and both are worth visiting, but Saranac Lake might be more affordable than Lake Placid. Plus, Saranac Lake is generally quieter, with many easy and scenic hikes to enjoy.

Saranac Lake is underrated compared to Lake Placid, but is very much worth a visit.
