I have had an excellent time at UVA. Making friends and fitting in can seem like a daunting task at first, however, the school is full of amazing people and a welcoming, supportive community. It is important to get involved with clubs as they help you be involved with causes you truly care about and are great opportunities to make a true impact and get professional opportunities.
The University of Virginia is nestled in the city of Charlottesville, which is full of character through both the people, architecture, and scenery. Besides the great physical environment the university has a great social environment, and this includes both the students and professors. All of my professors not only ensured me a well-rounded education they made sure to create time for each one of their students, showing that they not only cared about our learning but our personal well-being. Besides my professors, I have met some truly amazing peers. The community of peers at UVA can be very competitive at times, but overall many of my peers have become some of my best friends and biggest inspirations. Though, I have to say that I am upset at the lack of classes in the art department at UVA; the university tends to put a lot of their money towards their sports programs instead of the arts. I would love to see an increase in art classes at this university.
I entered the school wanting a medium-sized town-and-gown experience and got what I wanted. The lack of diversity or meaningful connection to a typical metropolitan population was shocking at first. On a purely anthropological level, the mix and contrast of highly educated, milquetoast upper crust Americans with first generation scholarship students who know the struggle was enlightening. Greek life was overwhelming as someone who wasn't a part of it, yet they had far too much say about university matters for organizations that were ultimately self-serving. For some, the insular grounds can be comforting and grounding while for others, it will be suffocating and claustrophobic. As someone who enjoyed the Blue Ridge Mountains and local specialties, every season brought a treat. That's enough. I've had both irreplaceable and regrettable memories that come with being a college student far from home. If UVA could change for the better, I'd be more optimistic about the nation.
I enjoyed my time at UVA because of the balance between social life and academics. Work hard play hard. The campus culture is so tight and unified that it really feels like a big home. There are many programs for my major, economics, that offer specific and top notch learning from seasoned professors.
I had a great experience at UVA as a first-year. Living in on-grounds housing was one of the best experiences because it fostered a community where I felt safe and could mingle with others in my building (Metcalf) and the building attached (Lefevre). As a first-year student, I had some of my best memories of staying up late in study rooms with my new friends. Ordering takeout and watching movies in the lounge rooms was a fun way to stay in for the night; however, the HDMI was not always on our side. Of course, having a shared living space has its downfalls such as noisy neighbors and dirty bathrooms, but it was worth it for the friendships and other connections, including my amazing RA Michaela. I would rate my academic experience about an 8/10 for the school year. I had a few amazing professors, a few "normal" professors, and a couple of awful professors. Make sure you research professors and courses on the course forum!!
The University of Virginia offers an excellent academic program with professors that care about their students well-being.
I love UVA! I've had some extremely interesting professors that leave me wanting to learn more and expand my knowledge on the subjects that they teach. The student life is amazing and there's always something to do and get involved in if you're looking for it.
Overall, I have not had a bad experience at UVA so far. The food is decent. The education is pretty good. Professors can be hit or miss, but overall it's a good learning environment.
UVA is a great school, but was still struggling to face its past when I was there 2013-2017. The school can have a very elite feeling, and it feels connected to the fact that the university used to own slaves.
Fantastic balance of academics, athletics, and social life. Really the quintessential college experience
This has been a great school. I was able to explore many different interests through the plethora of classes and ultimately decide on my current major. It's a large school so assigned advising isn't great, but advising you have to seek out is.
Overall UVA is a great school, but I think certain things could make it better. I think mental health days should be given to students. Like each student should be able to use a mental health day if they just need a break. Of course there should be rules to it but I think giving each student 5 mental health days that they can use during each semester would be helpful to a lot of students.
I've been lucky enough to find an amazing, diverse group of friends here at UVA at that has made me very happy. I think overall, this school does a lot of things very well. Most people are very kind and welcoming and the academics are rigorous, but definitley preparing us well for our futures.
I like UVa, I cant think of anything id like to see change. UVa has great diversity and from what I've seen, is inclusive of all levels.
I loved my time at UVA. It is a very balanced college experience- excellent academics and studious people, but a vibrant social scene and great sports teams. Charlottesville is a quaint, small city with lots of beautiful nature nearby.
It's been fun to assimilate into the college scene and be active around campus. Making connections is something that is not taken for granted at the University of Virginia and it has done wonders for my future already.
The housing situation here at UVA is horrible. Some of the facilities are filthy and the housing does very little to amend conflicts and situations between roommates.
