Tonight the city is full of morgues
And all the toilets are overflowing
There's shopping malls
Coming out of the walls
As we walk out among the manure
That's why
I pay no mind
I pay no mind
I pay no mind
Give the finger to the rock 'n' roll singer
As he's dancing upon your paycheck
The sales climb high
Through the garbage-pail sky
Like a giant dildo crushing the sun
That's why
I pay no mind
Sleep in slime
I just got signed
So get out your lead-pipe pipe dreams
Get out your ten-foot flags
The insects are huge
And the poison's all been used
And the drugs won't kill your day job
Honey
That's why
I pay no mind
I pay no mind
I pay no mind
That's why
I pay no mind [x7]
And all the toilets are overflowing
There's shopping malls
Coming out of the walls
As we walk out among the manure
That's why
I pay no mind
I pay no mind
I pay no mind
Give the finger to the rock 'n' roll singer
As he's dancing upon your paycheck
The sales climb high
Through the garbage-pail sky
Like a giant dildo crushing the sun
That's why
I pay no mind
Sleep in slime
I just got signed
So get out your lead-pipe pipe dreams
Get out your ten-foot flags
The insects are huge
And the poison's all been used
And the drugs won't kill your day job
Honey
That's why
I pay no mind
I pay no mind
I pay no mind
That's why
I pay no mind [x7]

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
American Town
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
very weird song, i guess the verse kinda tells you what his thoughts are "pay no mind", doesn't pay much attention to what's happening, completely ignores the weirdness of it all........ it's like when you have a day, that just feels really bizarre, and you have you ask yourself did it really happen? just "pay no mind"
I think this song is pretty bluntly about consumerism and soullessness.
I think this is just a big "fuck you!" to everyone.
this could be "a big fuck you," or it could be budhist as fuck.
Word
I think it's about him finally getting a record deal..."I just got signed." And before he gets signed, he's broke and has to "sleep in slime," because he can't afford a place to sleep. I love the line "give the finger to the rock 'n' roll singer, as he's dancing upon your paycheck."
"like a giant dildo crushing the sun" classic.
Yeah, this is very much like the great Alice in Chains' Grind and Again off of Tripod.. about commercialism and the emptiness of the recording/music industry. and AHHELLYEAH I love that singer line, the dildo line, LOL, this whole song sounds like something you'd sing in a bar with a big mug of beer in your hand, swinging it around like an old drunk dude. lmao, just ignore me. HA
A big fuck to everything that sucks. Pay no mind.
Beck's best song in my opinion, one of the best of the 90's.
