Arthur Morgan

Arthur Morgan

Arthur Morgan is the protagonist and main playable character of Red Dead Redemption 2. He served as the right-hand man of Dutch van der Linde, head of the Van der Linde Gang until 1899.

Meta Information

One of his nicknames, used among the gang members, is Mr. Morgan.

History

Arthur Morgan was born in 1863 to Beatrice and Lyle Morgan. His father was a criminal and an outlaw, who was arrested for larceny in 1874 when Arthur was just 11 years old. Arthur’s mother died when he was very young. Later down the road, Arthur’s father, Lyle, was killed and Arthur was there to witness it all. Ever since the incident, Arthur wears his father’s hat.

Around 1877, prior to the events of Red Dead Redemption 2, Arthur Morgan crossed paths with Dutch Van der Linde and Hosea Matthews, when Arthur was still very young. Taken under Dutch’s wing, Morgan became something of an apprentice to Dutch and came to share his ideals and goals. Their long history and Morgan’s deeply vested loyalty led Dutch to trust the boy more than most others. Arthur viewed Dutch as a surrogate father figure and passionately shared Dutch’s view of a life lived free from the constraints of civilization and the rule of law. Arthur met a girl named Mary Gillis during his youth and the two were deeply in love. However, they couldn’t continue due to Arthur deciding to not leave his life of crime and Mary’s family not approving of a criminal.

A little later, Arthur met a young waitress named Eliza, whom he sleept with, resulting in her becoming pregnant with their son, Isaac. Eliza was well aware of Arthur’s criminal background but still accepted whatever help she could get for herself and her son. She also allowed Arthur to get involved in the personal lives of her and their son Isaac. Arthur would visit them occasionally and even stay with them for days. One day Arthur arrived and found two crosses outside, he knew at that moment that they both are dead and found out that some robbers killed them for a petty $10. This incident made Arthur even harder and could never truly cope with the pain.

In the first chapter, Dutch and the gang were forced to flee Blackwater after a botched ferry heist and attempt to cross the western mountains to evade law enforcement. Not long after moving to Colter, Dutch and Arthur head out looking for John Marston and Micah Bell. Arthur and Dutch find Micah, who informs them of a homestead where a party is going on. They stop at the homestead hoping to ask for some help but instead come across O’Driscoll gang members, which results in a gunfight breaking out and causing the death of the O’Driscolls. After looting the whole ranch, they come across Sadie Adler, whose husband was killed by the outlaws. Arthur, Dutch and Micah bring her back to their camp. After returning, Abigail asks Arthur to find John Marston, who has gone missing. Arthur, accompanied by Javier Escuella head out in search of John, who is seriously injured due to wolf attacks. They find him and bring him back to the camp.

The gang decides to attack the nearby O’Driscoll camp, based on an interrogation of the gang member encountered at the homestead. The gang attacks the camp and discovers dynamite and plans to rob a train belonging to Leviticus Cornwall. On their way back to Colter, they come across an O’Driscoll that they previously saw being scolded by Colm. Arthur volunteers to catch him and succeeds, with the O’Driscoll (whose name is Kieran) being imprisoned at the gang’s camp and given no food.

Arthur, accompanied by Charles, heads out to find some food during which Charles gives his bow to Arthur and asks him to use it since his hand was injured during the failed ferry robbery. They both share a nice friendly conversation regarding their life outside and inside of the gang. Charles provides Arthur with some hunting tips. After Arthur manages to fell two deer, he and Charles return to the camp with enough food to last at least a few days for the whole gang.

Dutch and the gang rob the Cornwell train so they could fund their escape from the mountains; unfortunately, the detonator that the gang planned to use fails, resulting in them chasing after the train. Arthur, Lenny and Javier manage to jump on the train from above. Javier falls off the train and Lenny also slips, but manages to hold on. Arthur then helps him up and the two fight their way through the train after which the rest of the gang arrives and finishes the guards off. The gang blasts open the private car using dynamite where they find highly valuable state bonds. After that Dutch leaves and gives Arthur the option to deal with the last three guards. Here the player has a choice to either kill them or spare them. After Arthur deals with the guards, he leaves for Colter.

In the second chapter, when thaw comes in, the whole gang decides to relocate and find a new location to set camp in The Heartlands, near the town of Valentine, Arthur goes to a saloon in valentine where he meets Javier, Charles and Bill. After Bill gets drunk and attacks someone, resulting in a bar fight. Arthur throws some punches, but eventually a huge man named Tommy overpowers Arthur and throws him out the saloon window. Eventually Arthur, after a long fight, defeats Tommy, severely beats him, and only stops after Thomas Downes pleads to him. Later, Ducth calls upon Arthur and he meets Josiah Trelawny yet again. Arthur comes to learn that Sean MacGuire is still alive and they devise a plan to rescue him. Dutch asks Arthur to accompany Josiah, Charles and Javier on the rescue. As Charles scouts from a distance, the others confront the enemy head on. After a gunfight with the bounty hunters, Sean is finally rescued and the gang then returns to the camp.

Arthur along with Hosea set out to hunt a “1000 pound bear”. Hosea gives Arthur a Raven Black Shire Horse. They both set out to Grizzlies East to find the bear. On their way to the Grizzlies East, they both stop at the stables in Valentine where Arthur then buys a different horse. After they both set some baits for the beast, they both wait for the bear, who eventually comes out and attacks them. Arthur then saves Hosea’s life who thanks Arthur and gives him a map of all the Legendary animals. Arthur can go back to camping with Hosea or he can set off on his own journey. Arthur can also interrogate the O’Driscoll gang members captured by Van der Linde gang in the mountains. Dutch calls Bill over to castrate Kieran with burning hot tongs if he doesn’t reveal the location of Colm O’Driscoll. Kieran then says that he’s at Six Point Cabin, and is accompanied there by Arthur, John, and Bill. Upon reaching the hideout, the trio stealthily take out some of the O’Driscolls, before a shootout erupts. Arthur enters the cabin hoping to find Colm but instead he finds some other O’Driscoll gang member. Before the O’Driscoll goon can kill Arthur, Kieran shows up and kills the goon saving Arthur’s life. After this confrontation, Arthur threatens Kieran and blames him for setting Arthur and his gang up. Kieran tells Arthur that if that were the case, he would not have saved his life. Some debate in favor of Kieran from John and Bill results in Kieran staying with the gang. Arthur also has the option to go buffalo hunting with Charles and he can also rob a homestead of Chez Porter with Javier.

After some time, Mary Linton sends a letter to Arthur asking him to meet her. Once Arthur is done reading the letter, Leopold Strauss tells Arthur to recover the debt from a rancher named Thomas Downes. Arthur goes to Downes Ranch and confronts Mr. Downes. Mr. Downes tells Arthur that he is poverty-stricken which encourages Arthur to beat up Mr. Downes. Ultimately, Thomas’ wife Edith Downes comes running asking Arthur to stop and telling him that they are not lying about their poverty and that they really are poor after which Arthur leaves the Downes Ranch. After this altercation, Arthur as per Mary Linton’s letter goes to meet her. Upon meeting her, she tells Arthur that her brother Jamie has been formally admitted into a mad cult called the Chelonians. If Arthur agrees to help Mary then he can find the cult and Jamie near Cumberland Forest. Arthur scares the members off and chases down Jamie. Jamie has a gun, which Arthur shoots off his hands and then brings him back to Mary.

After Arthur and Dutch return from a scouting mission, Lenny tells them that Micah initiated a gunfight in Stawberry after getting drunk and killed two O’Driscoll members, resulting in his arrest. Before heading towards Micah, Arthur brings Lenny to Valentine for a drink in order to calm his nerves and they both get extremely drunk. Once sobered up, Arthur heads for Strawberry to rescue Micah from the police station. The sheriff refuses to release Micah, so Arthur breaks the bars on Micah’s cell and a firefight develops. Seeing the fight start, Micah immediately kills his cellmate who was also an O’Driscoll. Arthur instructs Micah and tells him that they both need to leave immediately but Micah refuses saying he has something he needs to do. They both are forced to kill almost all of the lawmen in the town. Finally, Micah arrives at a house where he knocks, kills a man and his wife, and collects his prized revolvers. Arthur and Micah then both flee on their horses fighting off the rest of the pursuing officers. Arthur castigates Micah for his reckless behavior and unnecessary violence. Micah insists that he will not return to Dutch until he can do something to redeem himself for his recklessness. He asks Arthur to meet him somewhere in order to carry out a robbery.

Later Arthur goes to the place Micah tells him to meet him at. As promised, they both rob a stagecoach that Micah learned about from his O’Driscoll cellmate. After holding control of the carriage, they are attacked by the O’Driscoll gang members trying to rob them. The duo finally manage to fight them off and escape from the other side of the river. Later, at the camp, Abigail asks Arthur to accompany Jack Marston for fishing at the Dakota River. While they are there, Andrew Milton and Edgar Ross, agents of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency approach them. Agent Milton reveals that they caught and killed Mac Callander, and then offers Arthur immunity in exchange for giving up Dutch. Getting upset, Arthur refuses the offer and takes Jack back to the camp after the agents leave the two.

John contacts Arthur and tells him about a train that will be moving through Valentine. They plan to rob the train and in order to get the train to stop; John suggests that Arthur should steal a stagecoach carrying Cornwall oil. Arthur steals the stagecoach and joins Sean, Charles and John. After setting up the stagecoach in front of the train, the train comes to a complete stop and the whole gang boards the train. Arthur provides encouragement for those who are not willing to give their possessions, Charles deals with the train engineer and John goes down the train with a bag to put the loot in. Arthur goes to look for Sean, who was given a task to deal with the baggage car but finds out that he is gone. Arthur finds him in a scuffle with a guard. Arthur eventually kills the guard saving Sean. As the lawmen were headings towards them, the robbery was cut short and they had to flee the scene managing to escape the lawmen.

John, believing that they are still lacking funds and need more tells Arthur about a herd of sheep coming in they can steal. John tells Arthur to go and buy a sniper rifle after which they both ride up to the hill, shooting at the ranch-hands. After the ranch-hands flee, Arthur then corrals the herd to the auction. The man who was running the auction recognizes the sheep and asks for 25% of the profit in exchange for keeping his mouth shut. Later the percentage decreases down to 18% after John negotiates with him. Arthur accompanied by John go to a nearby saloon, where they meet Strauss and Dutch. Leviticus Cornwall and his hired gunmen capture Strauss and John during the meeting. Arthur and Dutch rescue them and fight their way back to the camp. Dutch, realizing that they cannot stay in the same area anymore, sends Arthur along with Charles to investigate Dewberry Creek, which can be a possible camp location for the gang as suggested by Micah. The duo find a German mother and her children. Their father is missing. Charles somehow manages to trace the father to Clemens Point. They both fight the bandits off and rescue the father. Arthur returns the father back to the family while Charles head back to the camp and informs others to divert their caravan to Clemens Point.

In the third chapter (Clemens Point chapter), after the gang moves to a new camp location, Hosea, Arthur and Dutch go for a ride. On their ride, they come across Sheriff Leigh Gray, who had captured Trelawny since he was running an illegal gold prospecting operation. Arthur captures a couple of outlaws who had escaped in exchange for Trelawny’s freedom. Sheriff Gray then deputizes Arthur, Dutch and Bill – thanks to Dutch’s quick wit and deceptive ability – to help him stop Lemoyne Raiders moonshine operations. The trio with the help of Deputy Archbald MacGregor manages to bring down the moonshine operation, which gains the trio the Sheriff’s favour.

As instructed by Dutch, Arthur goes to Caliga Hall to gather some more information about the Gray Family. While doing so, he ends up talking to Beau Gray, who asks him to go to Braithwaite Manor and deliver a letter to his secret lover, Penelope Braithwaite. After Arthur delivers the letter to Penelope, she gives a letter of her own to be delivered to Beau Gray. The letter states that she is going to women’s suffrage rally. This news really alarms Beau and he fears that Penelope’s life is in danger. He offers money to Arthur if he will help save her. Arthur and Beau ride up to the carriage where the protestors will be riding in to convince her to leave. However, they are unsuccessful in doing so. Arthur is then asked to drive the carriage in order to protect her. Afterwards, Penelope requests Arthur to take Beau away in order to save him from his cousins. After Beau pays Arthur for his help, he returns to the camp.

Ever since Trelawny’s disappearance, Dutch’s concern grows and he sends Arthur along with Charles to find him. The duo find the caravan he had been staying in. They find blood on the floor and signs, which indicated that Trelawny left in a hurry. Arthur and Charles track the trails that lead them to a small camp where they find some of Trelawny’s belongings. They both are attacked by two bounty hunters whom they quickly subdue. After interrogating one of the bounty hunters, they find out that Trelawny is being held at a nearby farmhouse. They both ride to the location and see Trelawny being escorted into a cabin by a few bounty hunters. Arthur and Charles attack the bounty hunters resulting in them escaping into a nearby tobacco field. They both venture into the field and hunt down the rest of the bounty hunters, before returning to Trelawny and rescuing him. Trelawny tells Arthur and Charles that he did not tell them anything valuable. They both safely bring Trelawny back to the camp.

A little later, Uncle asks Arthur if he would like to join him along with Charles and Bill to rob a stagecoach. Arthur accepts the offer and joins them. The stagecoach was owned by Cornwall, who hired a small private army of mercenaries to protect the stagecoach.  After they rob the stagecoach, the group is forced to flee to a nearby barn where they attempt to hide. Unfortunately, the mercenaries find them and light the whole barn on fire as they open fire on them. Arthur along with the rest of the group fight their way out fo the barn and into the forest where they engage into some more of Cornwell’s men. After the combat ends, they escape back to their camp.

Not long after, Lenny tells Arthur that he got some Intel from the black community in Rhodes regarding the Lemoyne Raiders. He tells him that he learned about Lemoyne Raiders having a store full of military-grade weapons stockpiled. Arthur agrees to rob the raiders and they both ride to the location Lenny’s contact told them to go. Arthur and Lenny see a coach coming by, which they follow at a safe distance before they arrive at Shady Belle. They both attack the manor, and after eliminating the Lemoyne Raiders, rob the coach and take it away. On their way back to the camp, some raiders try to intercept them but they manage to eliminate them as well. Arthur claims a Bolt Action Rifle as his own form the stash upon their return to the camp and decides to sell the rest to earn some cash for the camp. After this, Arthur is also able to take part in other robberies with gang members such as robbing a homestead with Sean, robbing a stagecoach with Sean and Mary-Beth and one more stagecoach with Bill and Tilly. Furthermore, Arthur can also go for fishing with Kieran at some point during the story and later he can go with Javier as well.

Immediately after Arthur and Lenny’s return, Bill and Karen Jones approach them and propose robbing a bank in Valentine, which they already gathered the information about. After a bit of persuading, Arthur agrees, and Arthur along with Lenny, Bill and Karen ride to Valentine. Karen pretends to be a lost girl, and confusing the guard, knocks him out. Now, either Arthur can place a dynamite on the safes to blow the locks off or he can silently lock pick. After looting, on their way out, the law attacks the group but they manage to fight their way out. After this robbery, Arthur rides back to Downes Ranch once again, to get the money from Edith Downes that her husband owed Strauss.

Later down the road, the gang hears that O’Driscolls have planned a truce meeting for Dutch and Colm. Hosea instantly notices that this is a trap but Dutch still agrees to check this meeting out after Micah persuades him. Arthur, also suspicious, still accompanies them. Arthur was appointed as a sniper on a cliff overlooking the meeting but he is captured by the O’Driscolls and imprisoned in their hideout. Arthur was shot in the shoulder as well.  Colm then reveals himself to Arthur and tells him that they have captured him as a way to lure Dutch towards them so that they can give him to the Pinkertons. After Colm leaves, Arthur cauterizes his wound and escapes back to the camp, where he takes a few weeks to recover.

The gang then decides to rob the Braithwaites and the Grays in order to get some more money for their stores. Arthur accompanied by Saean goes to the Grays tobacco fields and light them on fire using moonshine in exchange for a heavy sum of money from the Braithwaites. Then He goes with John and Javier to the Braithwaite manor to steal their prized horses. Tavish Gray tells them that the horses can be sold for five thousand dollars in cash but it was a lie and the value turned out to be just seven hundred dollars. Grays then tell the gang to meet them at Rhodes Island for a potential job opportunity. Bill, Micah, Sean and Arthur eventually go to Rhodes but it turns out to be an ambush. Sean is immediately shot dead while the Sheriff takes Bill captive. Arthur along with Micah clear out the street of all the lawmen before they confront Sheriff Gray and his deputies. Sheriff Gray leaves his office while holding Bill hostage, but he is instantly shot and killed by Arthur. Later Arthur and Micah gunned down all the deputies. Arthur expresses his condolences and deep affection for Sean and asks Bill to give Sean a proper burial.

When they return to the camp, Arthur learns that Braithwaites have taken Jack captive, in revenge for stealing their horses. A large group consisting of the gang members attack the Braithwaite Manor, and after as long and extensive fight manage to take Catherine Braithwaite captive. After she refuses to reveal Jack’s location, they burn down the whole manor. She then tells the gang that her sons have handed Jack over to Angelo Bronte, who is an Italian crime lord situated in Saint Denis. After the gang returns back to the camp, Agent Milton, who proposes that everyone would get immunity if they turn in Dutch, confronts them. They turn down the offer and Milton leaves saying he will return with fifty men. Knowing that this place is no longer safe for the gang, they quickly decide to relocate to Shady Belle, the place previously cleared of the Lemoyne Raiders by Arthur and Lenny. Arthur and John again go to scope out the place and kill the remaining Lemoyne Raiders before the gang finally moves into their new home.

In the fourth chapter (Saint Denis chapter), the gang relocates to Shady Belle. John, Dutch and Arthur go to Saint Denis, to find out where Angelo Bronte lives. Arthur learns that Bronte lives at a mansion near the river after he chases down a street urchin who stole from him. The three visit the mansion to confront Bronte. The trio enters Bronte’s house and almost starts a gunfight but they thankfully strike a deal with Bronte in which John and Arthur have to deal with a group of grave robbers in exchange for Jack. John and Arthur go to the graveyard where they are ambushed by some criminals but manage to gun them down. They both loot them and escape before the law arrives. They return to Bronte with the loot, after which he releases Jack followed by offering Dutch an invitation to the Mayor’s party.

Arthur, Bill, Dutch and Hosea arrive at the mayor’s party but split up quickly so they can pursue their own leads. Arthur hears about Leviticus Cornwall from a servant and follows him after Dutch prompts him. Arthur steals some documents, which are related to him, and flees the mansion to meet up with the rest of the gang. Bill complains they have no lead however, Hosea says he has a few which includes a potential riverboat robbery which also includes a high stakes poker game and even Lemoyne National Bank.

Trelawny decides to use it to their advantage after hearing about the riverboat tip. He uses his contacts and somehow gets Strauss, Javier, Arthur and himself on board as well as befriending the dealer to rig a poker game. Javier manages to pose as a guard and Strauss finds a seat in Arthur’s view. Arthur gets into a poker game with Desmond Blythe and a couple of others on the boat. With Strauss’ help in cheating, Arthur wins. After losing all of his money to Arthur Blythe then offers his pocket watch as credit and still loses. Pit boss arrives and congratulates Arthur after which he escorts Arthur and Javier upstairs to the vault where Reutlinger is located. Arthur and Javier both point their guns at the pit boss after he opens up the vault asking him to surrender his hidden gun. As Arthur is looting the vault, the pit boss draws a second hidden gun and Arthur is forced to shoot him down. The sound of the gunshot alerts the guards, who rush to see what happened. Arthur and Javier reunite with Strauss and Trelawny. The guards already discovered who the culprits were and attacked them. The group fights off a couple of guards after which they finally jump off the ship and swim to safety. After they reach the shore, they split the loot between each other.

Arthur later meets an Indian chief named Rains Fall, along with his son Eagle Flies at Saint Denis. Rains Fall tells Arthur that the US Army plans on moving his tribe off of their land and asks Arthur to steal some incriminating documents from the Cornwall Refinery which could potentially help put a stop to their relocation. Accepting the offer, Arthur sneaks into the refinery using a wagon, which was destined for the storage area. Arthur forces a man to give him the papers after which he escapes. After Arthur is held at gunpoint by a few guards, Eagle Flies causes an explosion as a distraction, which allows Arthur to quickly gun them down and escape with Eagle Flies. Eagle Flies pays Arthur and both part ways.

Back at the camp, Susan tells Arthur that the Foreman brothers have kidnapped Tilly and that they need to go and rescue her. Susan and Arthur come across a safehouse where they find Tilly and set her free. Then they head out to find the leader Anthony Freeman. After they have captured Anthony, they bring him back to Tilly, where the player has a choice to either kill him or spare his life. Susan persuades Arthur to kill while Tilly advocates the latter.

Sadie tells Arthur that Kieran has disappeared and that she is worried about him. As soon as she is done speaking, a horse carrying the decapitated corpse of Kieran trots into the camp and O’Driscolls attack the gang. The gang tries to hold them off but is eventually forced to retreat inside a plantation house. Dutch realizes that Sadie is outside and is attacked by the O’Driscolls, when Arthur rushes out and kills Sadie’s attackers. Sadie refuses to go back inside and instead decides to avenge her husband’s murder. Sadie and Arthur engage the enemy gang and finally force them to retreat. Later down the road in this chapter Arthur can join Micah in robbing a stagecoach along with Bill. He can also rob stagecoach with Lenny, which turns out to be a setup. Arthur can also go rustling with Uncle.

Dutch asks Arthur to come over and tells him that the two of them accompanied by Lenny will rob the Saint Denis trolley station after getting a tip from Angelo Bronte. The three of them break into the station and hold the clerk at gunpoint, before realizing that the only 90 dollars are inside the vault. The three try to escape whilst the lawmen are everywhere now. They board a trolley and ride out of the city center, the trolley eventually crashes and forces the trio to fight the policemen on foot. They eventually get a stagecoach, which they use to ride to safety. Dutch acknowledges that Lenny saved them. Arthur then gives 15 dollars to each of them.

Mary later contacts Arthur and asks him to meet her in Saint Denis. Arthur meets her and she raises her concern about her father. She tells Arthur that she is worried about her father who is engaged in drinking, whoring and gambling. Mary tries to confront her father after finding him with Arthur but he storms out without listening to what she has to say. Mary accompanied by Arthur follows her father to see where he is going. They see Mr. Gillis meet with Ashton, selling him a brooch. Mary quickly realizes that brooch is their family heirloom from her mother. Mary confronts her father while Arthur chases down Ashton to get the brooch back. After retrieving the Brooch, Arthur asks Mary where her father went to which she replies that she does not know and no longer cares. She invites Arthur to the theatre with her, to which player can either accept or decline. Later on, Mary asks Arthur to run away with her, but Arthur refuses, saying that he is a wanted man and that being with him would put her in danger, and that he has people to take care of. Mary realizes that Arthur would never renounce the life of an outlaw and says goodbye to Arthur parting ways with him.

When Arthur returns back at the camp, Dutch asks Arthur to come to the balcony and tells him that he and Hosea are not able to come to an agreement on what to do next. Dutch says that he wants to kill Angelo Bronte for betraying and tricking them, and that it will make robbing the bank easier as well. Hosea on the other hand disagrees and says that the plan is reckless, and would endanger the whole gang. Arthur agrees to side with Dutch and they both go to Lagras where they make a deal with a fisherman named Thomas. Dutch talks to him and both the parties come to an agreement that Dutch and Arthur will help him find his assistant who has gone missing. In exchange, the fisherman will ferry the gang to Bronte’s mansion. The three of them set out to find the assistant and find him in the swamp. They bring him to the boat and as they are rowing back to Lagras, a gigantic alligator bites the young man’s leg and throws him into the water. They pull him out, shoot the gigantic alligator scaring it off and return to Lagras.

After Arthur, returns back to Lagras, the whole gang boards Thomas’ boat and make their way to Bronte’s mansion. One they reach the mansion, the gang gets shot at by Bronte’s men and take cover, open firing at the enemy guards situated in the courtyard. Reinforcements arrive but by that time, the gang already secured the area. They approach the door and Arthur blasts open the lock on the door. The gang enters and starts clearing the rooms one by one. Arthur goes upstairs and enters a room where Bronte ambushes him but Arthur subdues Bronte. Arthur carries him downstairs and to the boat. Since the policemen already heard the gunshots, they already arrived at the scene and the gang had to fight their way back to the boat. Once the gang is on the boat, they set for Lagras, planning on ransoming Bronte for money, however on their way back, Bronte insults Dutch and tells him that the gang will turn on him for money. He offers one thousand dollars to whosoever kills Dutch and no one responds back. Dutch getting angry drowns Bronte and then throws his body to the alligators, which surprises and shocks the whole gang due to the brutality they just witnessed.

Back at the camp now, Dutch and Hosea finalize the plan for the robbing of Saint Denis bank. The gang prepares and rides out the next morning, and during the ride, Dutch once again goes over the plan. Hosea and Abigail are supposed to cause a diversion to distract and divert the police away from the bank while the rest of the gang will enter the bank using its front doors. Once they get inside, Arthur loots the safe when suddenly the Pinkerton arrives and surrounds the bank. Agent Milton holds Hosea hostage and asks the gang to surrender. Dutch tries to negotiate but Agent Milton refuses and shoots Hosea in the chest killing him. After Hosea is killed, the gang attacks the Pinkertons in full force and a massive shootout arises. Arthur is instructed by Dutch to use the dynamite in order to blow up a hole through the side of the bank to create a path they can use to escape. Arthur blows up the wall and goes to the rooftop from where he lays down cover fire hoping the rest of the gang can make a run for it. The rest of the gang joins Arthur on the roof but without John, who has been captured by the Pinkertons. As the gang is trying to escape, Lenny is killed by Pinkertons. Arthur pauses for a moment to mourn his friend and then the gang continues to make their way to an abandoned building where they hide until nightfall. Later they head to the docks in hopes to find a boat they can use to escape. The police however, have the whole area under heavy surveillance and they are not able to reach the docks. Charles distracts the guards, which allows the rest of the gang to get to the docks, and they board a ship that is destined for South Pacific. Unfortunately, the boat sinks which separates Arthur from the rest of the gang.

In the fifth chapter (Guarma Chapter), Arthur washes up on the shores of Guarma and searches for civilization. Arthur finds the gang at a campfire, but the reunion doesn’t last for long as the local military arrives and arrests them all, transporting them to jail. On their way to the jail, rebels attack them. In the whole confusion, Arthur collects the keys from a dead soldier’s corpse and uses it to unlock his shackles. After killing the guards, Hercule Fontaine, the leader of the rebels tells the gang to follow him. As they are escaping, Javier is shot in the leg by the coming reinforcements, which forces the gang to leave him behind. Hercules leads the rest of the gang to a small rebel outpost, which is stocked with rifles. More reinforcements arrive but eventually the gang along with Hercule and his rebels emerge victorious. They all then head to La Capilla, which is a church turned rebel outpost.

After they arrive at La Capilla, Arthur resorts to resting for a short period of time after which he heads out in hopes of finding a way off the island. First thing he does is rescue Javier with the help of Dutch. They both go to a cave where they meet an old woman named Gloria. Dutch pays her a gold ingot to help them lead through the cave and up to the ladder that would bring them to Aguasdulces. The woman then asks for more money, but since Dutch cant’ pay more, the woman pulls a knife on him resulting in Dutch killing her with his own bare hands which Arthur doesn’t approve of. The trio enters Aguadulces, where they see Colonel Fussar and a group of soldiers, who are dragging Javier along with a donkey and beating him for information. The pair quickly begins looking for ways to find a distraction, which they find in the sugar refinery. Dutch cuts up the bags of sugar, spilling it all over the floor, before they blow up the furnace. In the distraction, they fight their way to Javier. After Dutch picks him up, they flee the settlement, until they reach the river of Arroyo de la Vibora. At the river, Arthur tells Dutch to take Javier while he holds off the rest of the soldiers. Waves of soldiers assault Arthur but Arthur finally wins and then leaves.

Later Arthur is captured while investigating the disappearance of a group of workers. He is then imprisoned with two other militants. A guard approaches Arthur to beat him up but Arthur quickly slays the guard, and then the other militants sneak through the camp. They save three more men from execution after which they engage in a gunfight with the soldiers finally killing them all and emerging victorious.

After this, Arthur with rest of the gang, goes to Cinco Torres. They notice a Cuban warship approaching along with swarms of enemies attacking. Hercule and the gang shoot at them from above until they reach the fort. Arthur, Dutch and Hercule rush out and take out the soliders who are trying to get the fort. Then they again rush back up to the top of the fort Cinco Torres and operate the cannon as the warship approaches them. After taking several heavy shots, the warship finally falls, after which the gang and Hercule plan to make their escape off the island.

As the gang is preparing to leave the Island, they notice a gun battery trying to prevent their escape. The gang realizes that the battery needs to be taken down. They assault the battery and Arthur blows up the cannons. They then set out after cutting their way to the ship. Arthur breaks into the worker’s cabin in order to find the captain but Levi Simon puts Arthur on gunpoint. Dutch breaks in and puts Simon on gunpoint after which eventually Fussar comes in and aims his own gun at Dutch. Arthur kicks the rifle to the ship captain, who shoots Simon in the chest. Fussar flees the cabin, and in confusion they then head out fighting their way to the ship; they notice that Fussar has occupied the final tower with a machine gun. Arthur blows up the final tower, which kills Fussar and finally allows the gang to leave the Island.

Arthur arrives at Van Horn Trading Post. He steals a horse here and uses that to return Shady Belle. The location is completely abandoned b the time he gets there, but he finds a letter, which is written by Caroline stating that they are at Lakay. As Arthur is about to head to Lakay, Pinkertons arrive at the location. Here Arthur has the option to either sneak his way out or fight his way out. When Arthur reaches Lakay, he reunites with the gang. They all welcome Arthur after which Abigail informs Arthur that John has been taken as a prisoner at Sisika Penitentiary before the rest of the gang arrives. The reunion is cut short by the arrival of Agent Milton and a bunch of Pinkertons who attack the camp. The gang with the help of Bill and Sadie resist the attacks using a Gatling gun. Afterwards, Sadie asks Arthur to meet her in Saint Denis so they can plan how to break John out of prison.

Dutch asks Arthur to clear out an old hideout called Beaver Hollow, which was home to a group of cannibals called the Murfree Brood. Arthur along with Charles head to Beaver’s Hollow, on his way, he tells Charles about the events of Guarma while Charles tells Arthur how they managed to escape to Lakay. The pair eventually reach Beaver Hollow. They both sneak through the camp, silently taking out the enemies until the alarm goes off. They both have to then forcibly rush into the hollow and clear it out of all enemies. While doing so, they both find a young girl named Meredith, who they captured and tortured. Arthur takes her back to her mother in Annesburg. After that, Arthur returns to the Hollow where the rest of the gang has also reached. Molly while extremely drunk stumbles into the camp and tells everyone that she was the one who ratted on them by telling the Pinkertons about Saint Denis Bank Robbery. As everyone watches in utter awe and shock, Susan kills Molly using her shotgun.

If Arthur has high honor: If Arthur has high honor during his time in Annesburg, he notices Edith Downes, the wife of of the late Thomas Downes whom he contracted tuberculosis from. As Arthur walks up to her, she becomes angry and blames him for her husband’s death and her son working in the mines. Arthur feels horrible for what he did, and brings Archie (her son) back from the mines and gives them some money to help restart their lives. Edith refuses and continues to practice prostitution to get money for her family. Arthur finally confronts her out in the woods about this and manages to convince her to leave town with her son.

In the sixth chapter (Beaver Hollow chapter), as per Sadie’s request, Arthur goes to Saint Denis to meet up with her. However, before he can meet her, he starts coughing violently and succumbs to his violent coughing resulting in his collapse. A stranger then escorts Arthur to the clinic where a doctor named Joseph R. Barnes diagnosis Arthur with tuberculosis. Arthur recalls Thomas Downes who he beat up for Strauss’ money that is where he contracted the disease from. This news comes as a shock to Arthur since this meant imminent and certain death for him. This causes Arthur to change for good and be a better man.

Following the diagnosis, Arthur meets up with Sadie who wants to survey the prison to make sure that John is still being held in the prison before they attempt to break him out of it. Sadie paid a hot air balloon operator named Arturo Bullard, to give Arthur a height advantage and help him inspect the Sisika Penitentiary to confirm that John is still there. Arthur spots John working in the field and the guard open fires at them causing them to leave. Once they reach the mainland, Arthur notices that Sadie is being chased by some O’Driscolls. He open fires at them from the balloon. During the gunfight, Bulard, the hot air balloon operator is shot and killed, and the balloon crashes. Arthur together with Sadie engages in a gunfight against the O’Driscolls, killing them all and emerging victorious.

Arthur heads to the docks located at Copperhead Landing, which is located a few miles from Sisika Penitentiary, in order to help Sadie break John out of prison. Abigail insists on coming with Sadie and Arthur, but they both shut her down, saying that she will be an extra burden during the mission. Abigail accepts their choice and thanks them before they leave for the prison. They sail and dock along the island shore. They both climb the watchtower, which is overlooking the fields, and take down the guard in the tower before they open fire and kill two other guards in the field. They take a prison guard named Milliken captive, Milliken informs them that John is not working on that day. They hold Milliken hostage and march to the main gate of the fortress and asks them for an exchange. Milliken for John. After they make the trade, the trio escapes the island while the lawmen are pursuing them.

Dutch and Micah call Arthur to help them confront Cornwall in Annesburg. They all hide in the harbor where they are expecting Cornwall to arrive. Dutch waits along with Arthur. Micah is sent to follow one of Cornwall’s entourage. As Dutch hears Cornwall talking to Pinkerton, he comes out of the hiding and demands that Cornwall give him $10,000, his boat and safe passage out of the country. Cornwall refuses and Dutch shoots him in the chest killing him. Pinkertons and hired mercenaries attack the gang and the trio barely manages to fight their way out of the town. During this whole operation however, Micah somehow manages to steal the papers from Cornwall Company, which he and Dutch can use to make plans.

Arthur accompanied by Dutch and Sadie head to Saint Denis to ensure that Colm is hanged. Arthur and Dutch disguise themselves as police officers while Sadie disguises herself as a lady of high society. They shortly realize that there are two O’Driscolls in the crowd along with one sniper on top of a building. Arthur goes and eliminates the sniper while Dutch and Sadie capture the O’Driscolls. This ensured that there was no one to save Colm from being hanged and he ultimately was hanged. Sadie thinking about avenging her husband gets enraged and kills both the O’Driscoll hostages, which leads to a shootout. After the altercation, Dutch and Sadie return to Beaver Hollow followed by Arthur’s return.

Later Arthur receives a letter from Mary, stating she wants to cut all ties with him, as that is the only way she will be able to move on, while she deeply expresses her sorrow and regret that they could never be together. Along with this letter, Mary also sends Arthur his wedding ring he gave her. At this point, however, Mary was not aware of Arthur’s tuberculosis and the fact that he would die soon.

Papers which Micah stole earlier revealed that there is a large shipment of dynamite which is being transported from Annesburg to Saint Denis. Arthur and Bill are instructed to intercept the shipment and take the dynamites for the gang. They both go to Van Horn Trading Post and set up an ambush. Bill acts as a drunk in the middle of the road while Arthur is situated quite far away and acts as a sniper. When the stagecoach stops, they both open fire on the guards and then take control of the carriage. Some mercenaries try to get them but they take them out and manage to escape. After they reach safety, Micah instructs John to take the dynamite to Bacchus Bridge followed by asking Arthur to join him there later on to set up the dynamites.

Strauss asks Arthur to collect debt from two debtors. One is a deserter from Fort Wallace whose name is J. John Weathers and the other is a miner named Arthur Londonderry. First Arthur goes for Weathers, who offers his supplies wagon as a means to pay off his debts. However, soldiers who were after Weathers attack the wagon as well. Arthur is forced to defend Weathers but the soldiers light the wagon on fire by throwing a lantern on it. After Arthur kills the soldiers, he sees Weathers lead a Wapiti Indian woman who he was in a relationship with and the situation they were in. Weathers offers a locket to pay his debt, here Arthur can either leave the locket or take it in order to absolve the debt. After Weathers, Arthur goes to Londonderry but finds out that he is already dead. Arthur goes after Londonderry’s widow to look for the money, but finds out that she and her son both are poor. Arthur here has the choice to still ask for money or give some more in addition to the one they have to help them live.

After these altercations, Arthur returns to the camp, extremely angry with Strauss for the sufferings he had caused, he tells him to get up and leave the camp. Strauss tries to resist but Arthur ignores his resistance and Strauss eventually leaves. Arthur throws the money at Strauss and asks him to leave after which he leaves.

Later Arthur meets up with John by the Bacchus Bridge, they both blow up the bridge and cut off the government supplies. This was near-death experience for both Arthur and John as they almost got struck by the incoming train. John later shares his growing concern about Dutch heading towards darkness. John expresses concern for his family. Arthur agrees with John and John informs him that Abigail thinks she knows where the money is. Arthur asks John to investigate further and talk to him afterwards.

Eagles Flies arrives at Beaver Hollows and asks the gang to help him retrieve his horses from Fort Wallace as the army stationed there has taken their horses. Dutch agrees as he sees this as an opportunity to cause damage to the government. Dutch calls Charles and Arthur to follow him along with Eagle Flies. Charles and Arthur express their worry due to Dutch’s recent change in behavior. The four of them ride east where they plan to steal horses from a government ferry. They sneak on to the boat and knock out the guards. They grab the horses and get back to the shore. Eagle Flies and Dutch take the horses back to the reservation and Arthur heads to meet Rains Fall.

Arthur reaches the reservation and meets up with Rains Fall, who realizes that Arthur has tuberculosis, and tells him that he has something that could ease his pain and provide him some comfort. They ride to the mountains to find the herbs. On their endeavor, they come across a man named Captain Monroe, who asks for their help. Arthur agrees and pledges to help him. Once they gather all the herbs, they both head to a sacred place but they soon realize that the whole place has been burned to ashes and their sacred objects were all gone.  They find out that the army was behind all this, and Arthur sneaks into their camp, steals the sacred objects back, and gives them back to Rains Fall. Rains Fall thanks Arthur before the two part ways.

Arthur meets up with Monroe, who shows him a young child who has contracted smallpox, due to Colonel Favours who had ordered to not ship the vaccines to the reservation. This disgusts Arthur, he asks Monroe about the location of the shipment. He goes to the wagon, steals the wagon, and brings them back to the reservation and gives them to Monroe.

Dutch orders Arthur to meet up with him and the rest of the Indians led by Paytah and Eagle Flies. Dutch tells Arthur that they plan on trapping the soldiers in the canyon to tar and then feather them. Arthur sees that Dutch is only using the Indians for his own gain and not to help them. He asks Dutch to not get involved in this but Dutch does not show any interest in his conversation. Dutch and Arthur place the dynamite next to some trees and wait for the soldiers to arrive. What the soldiers arrive, Dutch pushes the detonator and all the trees collapse, as a result blocking the road. Dutch and the group demand the soldiers surrender but instead, reinforcements arrive and swarm them instead. During this altercation, Dutch and Arthur fight their way down to the pass but the majority of the Indians either get killed or captured. Arthur and Dutch are forced to run and they reach the top of a cliff, where they get surrounded by the soldiers and jump to the safety of the waters below.

After Eagle Flies is captured, a meeting between Colonel Favours and Rains Fall is called. Rains Fall insists Arthur and Charles come along as well. Charles convinces Arthur to come. During the meeting, Arthur gets into a violent coughing fit and takes a break in a tent. While in the tent, he overhears that Favours plan on executing Monroe, and he puts himself on guard. After the meeting, Favours arrests Monroe and announces his intention of executing him. Charles and Arthur attack them, grab Monroe and flee from the scene. They take cover behind a rock and defeat the soldiers in a long and extensive battle, after which they take captain Monroe to Emerald Station.

Arthur and Charles come to learn that Eagle Flies is being held at Fort Wallace, and decide to break him out. The cross the river and then ride up to the fort. They wait until night, then slay a number of sentries using their bow silently, and then climb the back wall using a rope. The duo then slays more enemies on the wall, before they attack the soldiers and fight their way into the jail. After they release Eagle Flies, they blow a hole in the back wall and run to the canoe by the river. Despite soldiers shooting at them and the canoe in attempts of stopping them, Arthur and Charles manage to rescue Eagle Flies and return him back to his father safely.

Eagle Flies arrives at Beaver Hollow with a large number of Indian warriors and informs the gang that the army has raided the reservation. He requests the gang’s help in destroying the Cornwall company refinery as revenge. Around this time, Rain Falls rides in and asks his tribe not to go to war. Eagle Flies and the rest of the warriors dismissing Rain Falls request ride off. After discussing the issue, the majority of the gang follows to help. Once the gang arrives at the scene of the battle, they see many of the Indians have been killed. Arthur spots Eagle Flies, the gang splits in two groups. Arthur leading a force to rescue Eagle Flies and succeeding in doing so. They then meet up with Dutch’s group near the warehouse. Arthur and Dutch fight at the warehouse doors, enter and take the government bonds, As they are leaving the warehouse, unfortunately, a pipe bursts which incapacitates Arthur. Right after that soldiers arrive, and Dutch leaves Arthur to die. Just before the soliders could kill Arthur, Eagle Flies appears and kills the soldiers in a rapid succession followed by getting shot in the abdomen by Colonel Favours. Favours then turns towards Arthur to kill him, but Arthur shoots him first and kills him. Arthur exits the warehouse and confronts Dutch exchanging words about him abandoning him. Arthur takes Eagles Flies back to the reservation along with Charles and Paytah. After reaching the reservation Eagle Flies passes out due to his wounds and Arthur says goodbye to Charles since he decides to stay back with the Indians to help them escape the army. Soon after Arthur leaves the reservation, he suffers from another coughing fit and falls into unconsciousness. Fortunately, the German family who Arthur helped earlier find him and take him to Annesburg, where he regains consciousness.

Dutch announces to the gang they are going to pull one more major heist, before they leave the country. He tells the gang that they are going to rob an army train, which is going through Saint Denis, having payrolls and supplies to repair the Bacchus Bridge. The gang rides to Saint Denis, but the train goes through the city, which forces the gang to pursue the train through it. Once the gang boards the train, they are attacked by a large number of enemies, during which John gets shot in the left shoulder and Arthur fights them off. Dutch tells them that he will go help John and goes after him while the rest of the gang eliminates the rest of the soldiers guarding the train and grab the loot. Dutch later appears and tells Arthur that John had died which leaves Arthur deeply saddened.

As they return back, they come across Tilly, who says that Abigail has been captured. Dutch and Micah decide to leave and the rest of the gang follows. However, Arthur and Sadie refuse to leave their old friend die and have Jack become an orphan; decide to go to Van Horn to help rescue Abigail. Arthur covers Sadie from a lighthouse as she fights her way through the town. After she reaches the building where they’ve held Abigail, Pinkertons ambush Sadie and capture her. Arthur fights his way to her in order to rescue her and kills the guard who ambushed Sadie but Agent Milton appears and holds Arthur at gunpoint. He tells Arthur that Micah has been feeding information to the Pinkertons ever since his return from Guarma. Arthur and Milton are locked into a struggle when Abigail shoots Milton in the temple with Sadie’s revolver which kills Milton and saves Arthur. Arthur takes Abigail back to Tilly and Jack and asks them to leave with Sadie as he confronts Micah. Before they leave, Abigail gives Arthur the keys to Dutch’s money stash and tells him the location of the money before she says goodbye.

Arthur walks back into the camp and tells everyone that Micah is the traitor, which results in Arthur and Micah drawing their guns on each other. No one is willing to side with either of them because of sudden confusion. John suddenly appears back at the camp and confronts Dutch about leaving him to die. Susan takes Arthur’s side and points her shotgun at Micah. Javier appears and announces that Pinkertons are coming which distracts Susan, giving Micah a chance to kill her. The rest of the gang gathers behind Dutch and Micah, but Pinkertons arrive at the scene before they could kill Arthur and John. Arthur and John escape through the caves where Arthur tells John that Micah is the rat. After they reach the surface, Arthur ensures John that his family are safe at Copperhead Landing and tells John to make a good life for him and his family with this second chance. They are then forced to escape into the woods as Dutch and the rest of the gang pursue them thinking they are the traitors. John and Arthur have their horses shot from underneath them, which forces them to run away on foot as they kill Pinkerton officers. Here Author has a difficult choice to make, either help John escape the Pinkertons and reach his family or return to the camp for the money.

If Arthur helps John escape: Arthur continues forward with John and they both head towards the mountains. Eventually, Arthur tells John to continue along while he holds off Pinkertons. Arthur gives John his hat and his belongings and John part ways with Arthur. Micah then attacks Arthur; both men fall from a ledge on to the ground and engage in a lengthy fistfight in which they both sustain several physical injuries. Arthur pistol-whips Micah across the face after he is pinned against a wall but loses his grip of the revolver. Arthur crawls towards the revolver to kill Micah with it, but Dutch prevents that from happening. Arthur once again tells Dutch that Micah is the rat, and that he gave him everything yet eh still ratted on the gang and John is the only one who made it out. Micah picks another one of his revolvers from the ground and asks Dutch to come with him and get the money but Dutch just walks away abandoning both Arthur and Micah. There are two possibilities now depending on the level of honor Arthur has.

  • If Arthur has High Honor: After Dutch abandons them, Micah walks away angrily and Arthur is left to die. Arthur crawls to the edge of the cliff and witnesses his last and final sunrise as he passes away due to his tuberculosis and injuries.
  • If Arthur has Low Honor: Once Dutch leaves, Arthur is approached by Micah, and is shot in the head by him after he claims that Arthur is not better than him. Micah then walks away laughing and spitting on Arthur’s corpse.

If Arthur goes back for the money: Arthur gives his hat and other belongings to John and leaves John to escape the Pinkertons on his own. Arthur then fights his way back to the camp and manages to find the sack of money in Dutch’s chest inside the cavern. As Arthur is leaving the cave, he is attacked by Micah and is stabbed in the side with his own knife. Arthur wrestles with Micah and finally gets him off him and takes his own blade out. They both engage in a knife fight. The events following this point depends on the level of honor Arthur has.

  • If Arthur has High Honor: Arthur slashes Micah’s left eye, blinding it. Micah gets angrier, tackles Arthur to the ground, and tries to stab him but fails. Arthur bites Micah’s hand and proceeds to punch him in the face forcing him off him. Dutch arrives to break the fight. Arthur again tries to convince Dutch telling him that Micah is a traitor; however, Dutch ignores that claim and dismisses the claim as “nonsense”. Dutch abandons both fo them and leaves the scene. Micah leaves and takes the money which Arthur took from Dutch’s chest. Arthur is left alone to die and he dies watching the sunrise due to his tuberculosis and stab wound.
  • If Arthur has Low Honor: this time instead of slashing Micah’s left eye, Arthur loses his balance and is tackled to the ground by Micah. Micah stabs Arthur in the chest before Dutch arrives to break their fight up. Arthur tells Dutch that Micah is a traitor and that he should kill him. Instead Dutch abandons them both and walks away. As Arthur begins to crawl away, Micah approaches him with a knife in hand and kills Arthur by stabbing him in the back.

If Arthur dies with High Honor, then a deer basking in the sunlight is seen and if Arthur dies with Low Honor, then a coyote in the rain is seen, while in the background ‘Crash of Worlds’ by Rocco DeLuca plays. Later after a while, Arthur’s body is found by Charles Smith, who buries Arthur in a beautiful location facing the evening sun just the way Arthur would have wanted. Arthur’s grave can be found in Ambarino just northeast of Bacchus Bridge.

Epilogue

Thanks to Arthur’s help, John Marston was able to live a happy life afterwards. 8 years later, John and his family manage to buy land in Beecher’s Hope to live their new life as ranchers.

Years after Arthur’s death, Mary is seen visiting his grave, mourning his loss. Sometimes a deer or a coyote can also be seen visiting the grave depending on the honor level. Deer if the honor level was high and Coyote if the honor level was low.

John avenges Arthur’s death in 1907, when he tracks down Micah with the help of Sadie and Charles at Mount Hagen. Micah is killed together by Dutch and John for betraying the gang. John heading out to hunt down Micah leads Edgar Ross to kidnapping his family and finally his own death four years later. After the player completes 100% of the game, a short cutscene triggers where John is seen visiting Arthur’s grave where he is seen completing Arthur’s journal. While completing Arthur’s journal, John utters the words “Guess we’re just about done, my friend” and the cutscene ends going back to the regular gameplay.

Character

Personality

From very early on in the game Red Dead Redemption 2, Arthur Morgan can be seen as a cold, brooding outlaw who often resorts to violence and does not hesitate if it comes to killing someone. At his worst, Arthur can be undoubtedly unsympathetic and extremely ruthless towards the people he intends to hurt. Despite having such a violent side to his personality, Arthur does hold a friendly and playful side towards the ones he is comfortable and friendly with. Arthur was especially kind to John Marston and his four-year-old son Jack.  Arthur has a gentle personality around Jack as opposed to his intimidating persona.

Despite having the ability to commit violent acts, Arthur has his own moral code, in which he does not believe in unnecessary killing, especially if it comes to himself or those he cares about. Dutch has also raised Arthur teaching him that revenge will lead you nowhere and it will not help in any way. Although Arthur is extremely violent, but he strictly believes that, we should resort to violence only if it is necessary, and never out of personal enjoyment.

Arthur cannot be intimidated, bullied or bought. He is extremely loyal to his friends and gang. He is also fully aware of his own intimidating nature and how it affects others. Arthur shows that he fears no man, however, he does fear for the safety of those he cares about. He is extremely confident whenever it comes to handling something but at the end he fears his own death.

Arthur is well aware of the fact that he is a “bad man” and understands that whatever he does is morally wrong. Arthur, however, justifies his actions as being different from other criminals. Arthur genuinely believed that he could help people while in the gang, however, later down the road, he realized that mentality or philosophy of his was an “excuse” to justify his actions as said by John Marston later.

Arthur’s depleting faith in Dutch caused him to go through an existential crisis since Dutch raised Arthur ever since he was a young boy. Dutch’s philosophy was the main thing Arthur genuinely believed in up until the gang started to fall apart. Arthur slowly realized that the social issues are much more complex than he had thought and the issues, which he believed he could solve, are much bigger than the gang’s ability to control. The most disturbing realization Arthur had was the fact that how easily Dutch was able to influence younger men such as Eagle Flies to commit acts of violence for him. This without a doubt gave Arthur a new perspective on his own childhood, and how Dutch manipulated him to take advantage of him.

After losing his faith in Dutch, the gang falling apart and learning that he is terminally ill due to tuberculosis, Arthur gained more insight into his own feelings. He expresses his feelings to Rains Fall about his traumatic experiences including the death of his own son Isaac. He also told him that his tuberculosis has made him see the world “more clearly”. He also tells Mary-Beth that the world seemed “better, almost”. In the end, one of Arthur’s last objectives was to protect John Marston’s family and to secure Dutch’s hidden money for them to start and build a better life for themselves. Arthur decided to secure a future for the people he cared about which he knows he will not be able to see or be a part of but the one he can guarantee.

Arthur is generally humble. He never seems to prove himself to anyone or any other member of the gang. Arthur has been called a fool or an idiot in many forms but he never confronts them and ignores such remarks unless the criticism is from Mary Linton, his former lover. Although Arthur always kept his mixed feelings about his past with her to himself, he always wondered what life would have been had he and Mary stayed together.

Arthur is extremely intelligent and demonstrates more self-awareness than pretty much everyone else in the gang. This allows him to maintain his cool even under pressure to avoid jeopardizing his plans.

Unlike most of the people during the time period, Arthur is quite progressive in his views in regards to women and minorities. Arthur is disgusted by racism, and women in camp doing work which is traditionally for men. Arthur does not believe in any religion however, he does believe in some form of afterlife.

Arthur’s honor in the game can affect his overall personality; with high honor, Arthur can be seen as a selfless person who will think of helping others. With low honor, Arthur becomes a selfish person who only thinks of himself and his own survival, even prioritizing revenge on Micah and getting the gang’s money stash rather than helping John and his family.

Appearance

On Arthur’s wagon there is an old photograph taken before 1899. Arthur was seen in the photograph as a young man wearing a brown vest and pants with a bandana around his neck.

By 1899, Arthur is around 36 years of age, with a muscular build, which is perfect for his position, having thick brown hair. Arthur has blue eyes regardless of player choices. He also has a scar near his chin, which can be seen when the facial hair level is 2 or 3.

The players has the choice to alter Arthur’s hairstyle, clothing and his hygiene. Players must take care of Arthur, which as a result will influence his appearance. If Arthur is healthy then he will keep his stocky buffed up appearance. If the player overfeeds him, he will gain weight, giving him more health but restricting his stamina. However, if the player neglects the food and does not feed Arthur well, it will limit his health but increase his stamina.

During his time in Guarma, Arthur will have a sunburnt face, average weight and his grown would have grown longer. After Arthur returns back from Guarma, his health declines even more due to tuberculosis. As the illness progresses his condition worsens along with it. His face becomes pale and he looks sick. His eyes become watery and red. Due to extensive coughing, he also develops eye bags. Arthur loses his muscular appearance and starts to look thin.

Mission Appearances

Since Arthur is the protagonist, he appears in all the missions until the end of Chapter 6. Later, after the mission “fatherhood, for idiots”, Arthur’s voice can be hard immediately as a flashback in John’s mind.

Skills

Arthur is one of the most prominent and invaluable members of the Van der Linde gang. He is the strongest, most reliable and the most versatile member of the Dutch’s. Possessing a variety of skills, Arthur is willing to do whatever is necessary in the given situation for his gang’s survival or individual person’s survival.

Arthur is considered as one of the most dangerous members of the gang by both the allies and the enemies. He is recognized as the primary enforcer of the gang. By 1899, his reputation has surpassed such a status that other gang members and even enemies comment on his abilities and stature. Due to him being such an important member of the gang, he has been a target of multiple attempted ambushes, assassinations, capture or briberies, carried out by either rival gangs or Pinkertons in hopes to either eliminate him or turn him against Dutch.

Arthur’s natural strength and toughness combined with his proficiency and versatility makes him an unequalled combatant. Arthur holds knowledge of antique weapons such as Volcanic Pistol to modern weapons such as Mauser Pistols. Arthur being competent with a variety of weapons also makes him an invaluable asset of the gang. Arthur is considered as Van der Linde gang’s best gunslinger, equal to Micah if not surpassing him. He is also one fo the best melee fighters in the gang followed by Charles. Arthur’s physical dominance is noted and displayed during the infamous Valentine bar brawl. In a matter of minutes, Arthur knocks out three opponents and rescues Bill and Javier followed by defeating huge Tommy by nearly beating him to death. Tommy was known as the toughest person in town and he was extremely huge in size. This incident leaves a lasting impression of Arthur in the town.

Even during his advanced tuberculosis, and near death, Arthur still managed to fight Micah alone, leaving Micah extremely injured. If Arthur had a high honor then blinding Micah in one eye. However, sometimes on rare occasions, when Arthur was fully healthy before tuberculosis progressed, he used to get surprised by random physical encounters, which he could not overcome due to that “surprising” nature of the encounter. He has lead the Van der Linde gang members several times against a number of law agents, soldiers and rival gang members.

Arthur is also a skilled interrogator, not only is he capable of intimidation and force but he is also capable of acquiring information through his charisma and charm. He demonstrates a quick ability to learn and operate machinery and transportation, which also includes steam locomotives. His journal is evidence that he has a natural talent for art and writing since there is no proof that he ever received any formal training.

Arthur is usually a humble person and never boasts about his intelligence, even though he is extremely intelligent. He has demonstrated leadership, an excellent aptitude for strategy, and an accurate intuition for how the plans will either fail or succeed. He can also effectively judge a character, assessing the actual intentions, deceptions and capabilities of those around him. Hosea acknowledges that Arthur’s modesty hides a sharp mind that is far more acute and observant than Arthurs tends to let on. Arthur is a calm and collected guy and rarely loses his cool which makes his temperament an asset as well. He prioritizes the situation at hand rather than getting caught up by his emotions. This is seen multiple times where he witnesses his friend being killed or himself being betrayed but regardless of these things occurring, Arthur carries on dealing with whatever task is at hand. Arthur does not take lightly to whosoever tries to put him down. He quickly puts down people who insult or threaten him, which leads to him seen as an intimidating character.

Arthur has demonstrated his capabilities of acquiring wealth and material for the gang through activities such as hunting, fishing, and scavenging, crafting, gambling, loan collecting, robbing and looting amongst many other means. It is evident in the gang’s ledger, which holds testimony to Arthur’s resourcefulness to the gang and how valuable he is. He is able to produce or acquire far greater quantities of food, money, medicine, herbs, pelts, stolen items, contrabands and other goods for the gang than all the other gang members combined.

Arthur is quite proficient in wilderness survival. Although, in the beginning, he tells Charles that he never got the hang of shooting a bow, Arthur quickly gets the hang of it. During his time with the gang, Arthur has learned how to live at the edges of society. Arthur is able to effectively track, hunt and skin animals. Unlike John, Arthur knows how to swim and he is a skilled equestrian.

Dead Eye targeting and Eagle Eye

Arthur, like any other protagonists in the Red Dead series, can also use the ability Dead Eye to slow down time and carefully kill enemies. As the player level up the skill, the player can also target critical areas of the target, unlike the previous entries.

Eagle Eye

Eagle eye is the new survivalist skill added for Arthur in Red Dead Redemption 2, which allows the player to highlight animal tracks, objectives and other points of interests, which allows the players to track the targets effectively over long distances.

Trivia

  • Arthur is often seen riding right next to Dutch, and generally remains close to the gang leader when both are involved in a job.
  • Arthur’s name indicates Welsh ancestry, which is also supported by the name of one of his former horses, Boadicea, named after a Celtic queen who fought against the Roman Empire in Wales.
  • Arthur is Rob Wiethoff’s favorite character.
  • Arthur wears a black hat, which is associated with the villain in the old western stories, despite being the protagonists of the story. Meanwhile, Micah, who is an antagonist, wears a white hat, which is associated with the hero of such western stories. This is more of a foreshadow of Micah’s betrayal as well as a conventional view for the outlaws being evil and the law being good.
  • As per Agent Milton, Arthur has gathered $5,000 bounty with the US Government, which is equivalent to about $150,000 in today’s currency.
  • Arthur is assumed to be of Welsh ancestry, as both his forename and surname are of Welsh origin. Arthur’s former horse named Boadicea also shared a name with a Celtic Queen who battled Romans in Wales.
  • When replaying missions from chapters 1 to 6, Arthur will always wear his default Gunslinger Outfit (with the exception of missions in Colter, which will see him wear his winter shotgun jacket, and missions in Guarma, where he wears his Guarma clothes), as well as the Tennessee Walker acquired during the mission “Outlaws from the West”. Arthur will also have his default level 3 hairstyle and level 3 facial hair. Additionally, some rare weapons such as Midnight’s Pistol and Otis Miller’s Revolver are available for him to use.
  • Despite not being able to enter New Austin, if a player uses the glitch to enter New Austin, Arthur still has some unique drawings for point of interest.
  • When the player is playing as John in 1907, they can visit Arthur’s grave after the mission “Simple Pleasures”. The overall look of the grave is affected by Arthur’s level of honor at the time of his death. If the honor level was high, then there will be flowers around the grave and the tombstone will be clean. If the honor level was low, the tombstone will be more rough and weathered, and there will be no flowers around the grave. Moreover, if Arthur had high honor level, then the writing on the tombstone will say “Blessed are those that hunger and third for righteousness.”, whereas if the level of honor was low, the tombstone will say “Blessed are those who mourn for they will be comforted”.
  • During chapter 5 and 6, Arthur loses his stocky appearance and starts to look sickly and thin. If players over feed Arthur, he will become overweight, but he will get his overweight appearance. The appearance disappears if the player changes an outfit.
  • Arthur mentions that he has never had a single day of certified education in his life during a side mission called “A bright Bouncing Boy”.
  • Much evidence suggests that Arthur’s name is having thematic connections to the Kind Arthur Legend. The dialogues spoken in the epilogue mission called “The Wheel”, for instance, makes pretty clear references to King Arthur and the Knights of the round table, later on John gives Jack the alias Lancelot. The experts of American Western Fiction have also noted the genre’s roots and comparing it to Arthur’s story theme. The name Arthur Morgan in itself then could be a reference to not just Kind Arthur, but also Morgan Le Fay, who was a conflicted Arthurian legend persona who was characterized by moral uncertainty and potential for both good and evil.
  • Arthur is the second protagonist to die in the Red Dead series, first being John Marston in the first title called Red Dead Redemption.
  • It is unclear as to what Arthur’s birthplace is, but according to a conversation with Hamish Sinclair (a minor character in the game), Arthur was born somewhere up north.
  • When replaying the missions, in the mission replay menu, Arthur appears along with John in the picture, which is representing ‘Epilogue, Part 1’, despite Arthur not actually appearing during the epilogues. This the image of him and John from the mission called “Red Dead Redemption”, during the standoff.
  • Photograph portrait of Arthur can be found at the Art Exhibition at Galerie Laurent in Saint Denis during the mission “The Artist’s Way” when the player attends Charles Chatenay’s exhibition.
  • Some stranger side missions must be started with Arthur but need to be completed with John due to parts of the missions requiring the player to travel to New Austin, an area where Arthur is not allowed to enter by default. Players have discovered that by glitching through to New Austin with Arthur they are able to complete the mission with appropriate dialogues for Arthur to appear (for instance, the NPC which gives the mission will not mention John, despite the fact that Arthur was not supposed to complete this mission but John was originally).
  • Arthur almost never says the word ‘Fuck” as John does, except during the camp song “One-eyed Riley”, and on another occasion when insulting the Murfree Broods by calling them “Kiin-fucking bastards”.
  • “The Haraway Outfit” in Red Dead Online is based on his outfit, “The Summer Gunslinger”.

Ever since the original Red Dead Redemption was released back in 2010 and swiftly completed by Matt he has been eagerly anticipating another return to the Wild West. In Matt's totally non-biased opinion the story told in the sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, is one of the best ever (at least as far as games go). And while some story DLC would be great, Matt isn't counting on it!
