Product Description

Not just Dusty's classic 1969 Atlantic album, but a full 14 bonus tracks!

Amazon.com

Dusty Springfield never claimed to be a soul singer, but Dusty in Memphis effects a unique and deeply moving synthesis of her brand of stylish pop and the Southern R&B of the late '60s. Her soft tones and hushed, confessional readings make for definitive versions of everything from "Son of a Preacher Man" (a later version by Aretha Franklin is good but less thrillingly sensual than this one) to Randy Newman's ballads "I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore" and "Just One Smile" to a swirling take on "The Windmills of Your Mind." The soul obscurity "Breakfast in Bed" even gives a knowing spin to a line from an earlier Springfield classic: "You don't have to say you love me." This expanded edition features vastly improved sound and a number of bonus tracks not on the earlier CD. --Rickey Wright

Why I didn't have this from my vinyl days I'll never know but now that I have it on CD, I'll never let it go! This much heralded and much written about album turns out to be Dusty Springfield in one of her finest hours...and Dusty had many. I've read the pros and cons of this much discussed collection of songs and find that every last one of the reviewers that I had occasion to read, had it wrong! Yes...it was not a huge hit as an album, however, it should have been had it been marketed properly! No, I'm not a marketing pro but I know great stuff when I hear it and this, yet again is another side of Dusty we have all had the pleasure of getting to know. When Dusty first came on the scene as a solo performer, she had an immediate "Teen" appeal...and rightfully so! She literally fell into the record books from her very first song and remained there for some years. This was no "One Hit Wonder" to be sure and gaining the title of the "Best Female Pop Singer in the WORLD" was no easy feat back then! Being a Brit, made it even more improbable. The thing that made Dusty so outstanding was what she brought to the mix. Her incredibly fine voice, her inimitable style, her impeccable phrasing, her acute musical ear and her production sensibilities were well in advance of her years. When she recorded these songs in Memphis, albeit piecemeal, and released it in 1969, the music world was in flux and she was still being perceived and marketed as a "Teen Pop Singer." This is the album from which she should have launched the next logical phase and seen her graduating to the next level of her career. It should have been aimed at the adult listener. Still too young to rest on her laurels and not yet at the stage of being a Bona Fide cabaret singer...combined with not fitting into the current mold of music of the late 1960's, I'm sure they didn't know what to make of her song choices on this album! I'm also certain they had no idea what to do with her at that point in time What a pity, for herein lie all the genres of song she was so good at. A mixture of pop, jazz, blues, country and folk...it's all right hre! Instead of allowing her to change into the next incarnation...her own version of yet another Dusty butterfly, they dropped the ball, allowing her to languish and putting her into a mode of virtual musical obscurity for some years. Who knows what might have happened had this album been handled properly...but the saving grace is that we are lucky to still have it available to us. It was after all, voted as one of the "Greatest Albums of All Time" on several fronts! Add this one to your collection if you haven't already done so...it's worth "Platinum" status in that universe alone! If you're hearing this collection for the first time...turn down the lights and light a candle. The ballads are killers! Close your eyes, and as you listen, hear the remnants of the tried and true Dusty combined with the new in a musical setting that cannot be described as anything short of astounding! I assure you, you'll fall in love with her all over again.

Nothing to dislike!

Dusty Springfield is easily among the most overlooked vocal masters of the 20th Century. It is difficult to say why; her voice was a lavish instrument of unique texture, her artistry ample to equal that of Garland, Piaf, Holiday and similarly celebrated women. If there is any flaw in Springfield's work it is the material itself, which is not always first rate--but which her voice nonetheless transforms from lead into gold.

Material is certainly no issue on DUSTY IN MEMPHIS, a recording which was a critical darling and commercial failure in 1969. Every song is first rate with a distinctly adult sensibility, and Dusty Springfield wraps her voice around each one with tremendous power and sexy sizzle, transitioning with remarkable ease between the soul-inflected "Son of a Preacher Man" and the night club-ish "Windmills of You Mind," to name but two cuts from this stunning set. From the meticulously crafted horn sections to the faintest tap of drums, everything about this recording is sheer perfection.

Springfield was a glitchy personality who was given to emotional extremes, but instead of exacting a toll on her voice this seems to have enhanced it. There is a knowledge in each vocal tone that ranges from the sexy yet somehow mocking "Just a Little Lovin'" to the emotionally devastating "No Easy Way Down" that sets her apart from her contemporaries and indeed from most of the great women of song of her century. This is the timeless essence of woman, laid bare without any tricks or games, authoritative, unpretentious, absolutely honest, not simply of a single era or musical style but for ever and all time.

A great deal has been written about Springfield over the years, and certainly she fueled the fire with her often jaw-dropping interviews and headline-making escapades. Over the years she has developed a cult of personality that sometimes makes it hard to see her for what she was: a white diamond that showed to almost inhuman perfection regardless of setting. Forget about all you've ever read, all you've ever heard--just draw the curtains, silence the telephone, dim the lights--place DUSTY IN MEMPHIS on the stereo--and surrender.

My introduction to Dusty was when I heard what turned out to be my favourite Pet Shop Boys' hit "What Have I Done To Deserve This" and I thought: "Wow, the old chick has got a great voice!" Years later, I'd seen that Rhino had reissued and apparently remastered "Dusty in Memphis" and being a fan of the usually great work that Rhino has done in the past in remastering the old classic albums plus after reading all the hype I decided to risk it and got the album. I'll have to say that Dusty's voice is brilliant and she ranks almost a highly as the late great Billie Holiday in the way she gets into a song but for some reason, the sound quality of the recordings here leave much to be desired. The volume levels are quite low and erratic with some tracks sounding much better than others and I can only guess that it's because the original master tapes have seriously deteriorated and despite Rhino's best efforts, this is the best quality of sound that they could resurrect. On the plus side though, the cardboard packaging is good although a mini-lp sleeve replica design would have been ideal. This version opens up into 3 folds and has a great booklet with 15 pages of liner notes attached to the middle fold and has no fewer than 14 bonus tracks making it 25 tracks on one disc! A great bargain and overall great track selections; too bad about the sound quality though.
