This ever-useful trade becomes an indispensable necessity, when the trade with the outside world is interrupted by war, a state of effort and violent upheaval, which further hastens the influx of people and money to the cities, and which makes the returns all the more necessary so as not to let the most abundant sources of financiers dry up [ ] . Arabic manuscript on European watermarked paper, in-4, 186 ff. plus flyleaf, 13 lines of black cursive per page, diacritical marks and vocalization in black and red ink, verses marked with three red dots, advertisements, frontispiece illuminated in black and red ink typical of Harar Korans, the Fatiha and the first verses of suraal-baqarad in circular medallions, sura titles written diagonally in small cursive, a few marginal comments, colophon signed and dated, small tears in the margins, in its original stamped leather binding, binding restored. Size: 24.5 x 16.8 cm (leaf); 18 x 10.5 cm (text area). This manuscript is typical of the Koran production of the Emirate of Harar, a kingdom in the Horn of Africa founded in the mid-17th century and located between present-day Ethiopia and Somalia. An example of this production, dated 1749, is in the collection of Nasser D. Khalili (QUR706.) Another manuscript, very close to our Koran, was sold at Roseberys in London on April 28, 2023, lot 340. Lot 41 - [Manuscript]. [Lyonnais]. HERBIGNY (Henri-François Lambert d'). Mémoire sur le gouvernement de Lyon, drawn up by Mr. D'Herbigny, intendant in Lyon, in 1701. In-folio, [1] f., 261 p., covered in medium, very legible handwriting (approx. 30 lines per page). Contemporary fawn basane, spine decorated with fleur-de-lys caissons, framed with simple cold fillet on the boards, edges speckled with red, leather missing from the spine, boards very rubbed. A fine copy of this text, written in 1697 as part of the large series of Mémoires des intendants sur l'état de leurs généralités, drawn up for the instruction of Mgr le Duc de Bourgogne. A printed edition was published in 1902 by historian Marie Chavanne. Henri-François Lambert d'Herbigny (?-1704) was intendant of the generality of Montauban, then of Lyon (from 1694 to 1700). He carried out his survey simply by sending a questionnaire to the parish priests of 134 parishes within his jurisdiction, without really criticizing the answers, which explains both the importance of the strictly ecclesiastical part of the description, and a rather perceptible pessimism about the management of the generality. As with all the memoirs for the instruction of the Duke of Burgundy, we can only emphasize its interest for the knowledge of the Lyonnais, Beaujolais, Roannais and Dombes regions at the end of the reign of Louis XIV.

Active since the end of the 19th century, Whiteway notably worked in the necropolises of the Nile Valley; having become close to Joseph Déchelette, he donated an important collection of archaeological objects to his museum in Roanne in the 1920s. 1. The Diary of William Whiteway, M.P., 1618-1634. Typescript copy of British Library manuscript Egerton 784. In-4, modest gray cloth binding. 101 numbered leaves typed in red and black on r° alone. Guerin, 1761-1783. 22 volumes in-folio (45 x 31 cm), full contemporary calf, richly ornamented ribbed spines, red and havana morocco title-pieces, gilded fillets framing the sides and edges, red edges. Volumes 1 to 13 are homogeneously bound, volumes 14 to 18 in the same format are decorated slightly differently, the last 4 are also different, but homogeneously bound (some scuffing and spotting, some slightly worn headpieces and tails, some dull corners). First edition. A veritable encyclopedia of arts and techniques, the Description des Arts et Métiers was born at the instigation of the Académie des Sciences, created by Colbert to promote the development of science. With the Académie's project for a general History of the Arts in mind, it was at the instigation of physicist and naturalist René-Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur (1683-1757) that notes and drawings were compiled on a number of subjects, the latter being tasked with collecting the Memoirs of Academicians and other scholars in France and abroad. Réaumur himself contributed a number of articles, some of which were read at the Académie, but not published until many years later, sometimes with additions. On his death in 1757, Henri-Louis Duhamel du Monceau (1700-1782) was entrusted with the task of continuing this editorial enterprise. In 1761, the first booklet, L'Art du charbonnier, ou Manière de faire le charbon de bois, was published. The series continued to appear regularly until 1782, sometimes with plates and texts revised and corrected by the same authors or others (many of these works were published over several years), before concluding in 1788 with L'Art du potier d'étain. The descriptions are illustrated with beautiful, accurate plates, drawn and copper-engraved in intaglio by the most skilful artists of the second half of the 18th century, including Patte, Gardette, Saint-Aubin, Caffieri, Goussier, Roubo and others. Scholars, specialists and professionals all contributed to this veritable documentation of craftsmanship. Among them: Réaumur, Courtrivon, Roland De La Platière, Lalande, Abbé Nollet, Garsault, Gallon, Macquer, Bedos De Celles, Romme, Fourcroy De Ramecourt, Chapman, Malouin, Dudin, Fougeroux De Bondaroy, Fougeroux D'angerville, Roubo, Perret, Paulet, Duc De Chaulnes, Hulot, Morand, Saint-Aubin, Demachy, Salmon, Vieil, Lucotte, etc. Our 22-volume series consists of around one hundred quires illustrated with a frontispiece, 1,584 plates, many of them double-page and/or folding, and 8 tables. The Avertissement to Volume 1 states that "L'Académie donne la description des Arts par cahiers séparés avec tous les détails nécessaires représentés dans des planches gravées soigneusement. Published separately, this enabled artists to obtain these treatises on the arts they practise, without being obliged to buy at the same time others that would be less necessary to them". The various Arts are bound here in the order in which they were published. Although incomplete with a few treatises, this encyclopedia of arts and techniques was, even then, extremely rarely complete. Our copy is incomplete with the first 3 sections of L'Art du facteur d'orgue and pages 621-622 of the 4th section (T19), as well as pl. 79 of L'Art du fabricant d'étoffes de soie (T21), Traité général des pesches which is missing the 1st and 2nd sections of part 1 and the 4th section of part 2 (with pl 18 of Tome 9 enclosed separately with the work), and Art d'exploiter les mines which is missing a few leaves. The treatises missing here are: Art du paumier-raquetier et de la paume by Garsault (1767), Art de fabriquer la brique et la tuile en Hollande by Jars (1767), Nouvelle méthode pour diviser les instruments de mathématique et d'astronomie et Description d'un microscope by the Duc de Chaulnes (1768), and Art du pottier d'étain by Salmon (1788). Some of these treatises, revised and enlarged, as well as new ones, were published in Neuchâtel by Bertrand between 1771 and 1783. Paris, chez l'auteur, 1778-1789 [i.e. after 1793]. 6 volumes in-folio, fawn half-basane with corners, spines with 5 flat bands, author, title, tomaison and date gilt, untrimmed. [J. Bettenfeld] (rubbing, wear to corners and headpieces, vols. 5 and 6 disbound, one spine detached; qq. rare leaves with very light wetness). Exceptional and unique copy of this work illustrated with over 600 costume plates. It contains almost all these figures in two states, one in black and the other colored, as well as over 1,000 original drawings, with numerous annotations in the artist's hand. It also contains a handwritten version of his dedication to Jérôme Frédéric Bignon, the king's librarian, one page in-4, enriched with Bignon's autograph acceptance of the dedication. This exceptional set seems to correspond to the one quoted by Cohen: "A copy enriched with the author's original drawings and autograph notes was sold for 895 Fr. around 1850 at Techener". We don't know what it looked like at the time, but we now find it in a 20th-century binding, with all its margins preserved (h = 42.5 cm. excluding binding). The illustration consists of 610 copper-engraved plates. This copy contains 581 of these plates colored, including one on vellum folio, and a further 539 in black, or colored or heightened in wash. Each of the 610 required plates is thus present at least once. In addition, 63 plates are simply engraved. Finally, at the end of vol.5 are the 48 figures engraved on 12 plates of "Mascarades politiques et religieuses", based on an Italian work published in 1793. A total of 1195 engraved plates. In addition, there are 1,046 original drawings in pencil or ink, some enhanced with wash or color, including 5 painted in color on vellum sheets. Most of these drawings include handwritten comments by the author. Text not collated, full collation details on request. Edition shared between the booksellers Gabriel Buon and Nicolas Du Chemin, illustrated with 7 full-page genealogical tables, portraits of the kings of France, and numerous wood-engraved initials. Nicole Gilles (142?-1503), secretary to Charles VIII and then Louis XI, and controller of the royal treasury, is the author of these chronicles and annals, a historical compilation written up to the reign of Charles VIII. This work can be considered the first of the Histoires de France. Some copies, like this one, contain the table at the beginning, others at the end, signed A-D6 E4. The text ends with the word "fin" (sign. RRr1), but f. RRr2 to 6 are missing. Old signature on title, qq. reading marks and rare ink underlining. Sixth and last volume of this Latin Bible edited by Sebastian Brant, which includes the "Glossa ordinaria", the "Expositiones" by Guillelmus Brito and the "Moralia" by Nicolas de Lyre. This volume contains eleven epistles (to the Romans, Corinthians, Hebrews, etc.), the Acts of the Apostles, the epistles of James, Peter, John and Jude, and the Apocalypse. Sebastian Brant's epigram to the reader appears on the verso of the last leaf. All endpapers on this copy were painted red or blue at the time, and all text capitals highlighted in red, with running titles and paragraph headings underlined in red. Atlas volume for Abbé Raynal's L'Histoire philosophique et politique des établissements et du commerce des Européens dans les deux Indes. The title page provides no data on the publication. Maps and charts are in very good condition. Includes 2 world maps. Rigobert Bonne (1727-1795) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. He served as hydrographer in France and, during his tenure, produced a number of detailed and useful charts, particularly of coastal regions. His work is often devoid of decorative cartouches and compass roses, and marks a turning point in European cartography, moving from decorative to technical cartography. Uncommon edition, shared between several Parisian booksellers. USTC locates only a dozen copies at all addresses, including 2 under the name of Jean Longis. Originally published in Poitiers in 1530, Les triumphes de la noble et amoureuse Dame is one of the most famous works by Poitiers poet and historian Jean Bouchet (1476-ca 1557-59), a friend of Rabelais and Ronsard (the poet's father). Written in verse and prose, this curious mystical work, whose noble and amorous Damen is none other than the soul itself, and whose triumph is the fulfillment of virtue and morality in everyday life according to the Church, is also of human interest, with chapters on the relationship between husband and wife, child-rearing, dietetics, anatomy (including a description of the reproductive organs), and so on. Addressing women in particular, leTraverseur des voyes périlleuses, the author's self-appointed nickname, dedicates his book to the Queen of France, Eleanor of Austria, wife of King Francis I. It is a precious testimony to the daily life of couples during the Renaissance. This copy was treated and restored in 1981, with the binding completely rebound and the old parts preserved. (A fine copy, complete and in good condition, despite a few minor defects, including dull corners, slight spotting on the boards of some volumes, a small hole on the C-Eij sections of volume II, a small wormhole on one of the nerves of volume XII, pagination error on volume I of the supplement, a few isolated stains). First edition of this masterpiece of 18th-century natural science. This collection contains all 36 volumes produced by Buffon between 1749 and 1788. The first part is Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière, avec la description du Cabinet du Roi 1749-1767 (15 vol.), Histoire naturelle des oiseaux 1770-1783 (9 vol.), Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière Supplément (Théorie de la Terre, minéraux, animaux quadrupèdes) 1774-1789 (7 vol.), Histoire naturelle des minéraux 1783-1788 (5 vol. or 6 depending on whether the maps are bound in an atlas volume or not). The illustrations comprise 1,064 plates (including 1 repeated plate, Nº44 of volume XIII), 1 portrait of Buffon and 10 folded maps or figures, mainly by Jacques de Sève père et fils. The first three volumes, published in the autumn of 1749, included a methodology and long dissertations, such as Théorie de la terre, histoire générale des animaux, réflexion sur la place de l'homme dans la nature and étude sur la diversité de l'espèce humaine. Between 1753 and 1767, the next twelve volumes were devoted to the description and study of quadruped mammals. Between 1770 and 1783, the nine volumes of the natural history of birds were printed, while from 1774 onwards, the seven volumes of supplements were published. Finally, the five volumes of Histoire naturelle des minéraux were published between 1781 and 1788, accompanied by an atlas volume containing 8 folded maps. French naturalist and writer Georges Louis Leclerc, comte de Buffon (1707-1788), is the author of a monumental Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière, published in 37 volumes in-4º between 1749 and 1788, to which Louis-Jean-Marie Daubenton (1716-1800), Philibert Guéneau de Montbéliard (1720-1785) and Abbé Gabriel Bexon (1748-1784) contributed. The illustration consists of a fine frontispiece engraved by Edelinck after Le Pautre, a large vignette engraved by Edelinck at the dedication, 57 plates including 6 fold-outs, and 2 figures in the text, engraved by L. Cossinus after the author, representing various optical instruments, microscopes, telescopes, astronomical observations, geometric diagrams and two maps of the Moon. Numerous letterforms and culs-de-lampe. Michel Lasseray or Lasseré (1613-1697), better known as Father Chérubin d'Orléans, was interested in the manufacture of optical instruments. In particular, he invented the binocular telescope. Author of several works, La dioptrique oculaire is his first. Between 1670 and 1682, Père Chérubin presented his discoveries to the Académie des Sciences and to the court of King Louis XIV. (Graesse II, 130).

Second edition, largely original, of letters written by the author during a trip he undertook to Granada and Morocco to study Islamic society and research Koranic manuscripts. Nicolas Clénard (1495-1542), Flemish humanist and pedagogue, learned Arabic on his own from texts by Avicenna, translations of Galen and Hippocrates, but above all from the Psalterium Nebiense by Bishop Agostino Giustiniani. In search of teachers and texts, he travelled to the Iberian Peninsula in the company of Ferdinand Columbus, the son of the famous discoverer. He taught Greek in Salamanca, became tutor to Cardinal Infante D. Henrique of Portugal in Evora. Henrique of Portugal, then spent a long time in Morocco before dying in Granada, the last bastion of Arabic culture in the West (Dannenfeldt, "The Renaissance Humanists and the Knowledge of Arabic", in Studies in the Renaissance, vol. 2 (1955), p. 96-117). (wrong chif. for 512), [32] f., contemporary soft parchment, handwritten title on spine, laces (one lace broken, binding stained, modern etiquette on spine; some soiling, some pages browned). Illustrated with 73 woodcuts in the text, some full-page, including a portrait of Damhouder and his coat of arms. New Latin edition of the famous manual of criminal law by the Flemish jurisconsult Josse de Damhouder (1507-1581), who strongly influenced the practice of criminal law. Originally published in French in 1554 under the title "La practique et enrichidion des causes criminelles...", the work caused a scandal at the time of its publication, as it was accused of plagiarism. However, this did not prevent it from enjoying great success, thanks in particular to its engravings (several were deemed licentious, notably the scenes of adultery p.263, fornication p.294, incest p.299, rape p.302, etc.). These depict crimes, tortures and the stages of legal proceedings, with the last panel showing a judge in a courtroom. The work was reprinted many times in French, Latin, German and Flemish. Some handwritten annotations in brown ink in the margins, the engravings slightly enhanced in bistre. Old inscription on the upper cover, including a drawing of a coat of arms. The illustrations include a frontispiece dated 1702, 35 plates out of text and 43 large vignettes in the text representing numerous views, maps, plans, flowers, scenes of daily life and medals, all engraved on copper by C. Decker, some figures by or after Jacob Meurs or Marco Boschini. The present copy includes 6 more plates than the table, which lists 29 (the copy described in Blackmer gives 34 plates). Dutch humanist and geographer Olfert Dapper (ca. 1635-1689) analyzed and compiled numerous ancient and contemporary works of history, geography and travel writing, thus synthesizing all contemporary knowledge of the region. Second edition, known as the Panckoucke edition, of the Description de l'Egypte published by Charles-Louis-Fleury Panckoucke under the direction of Edme-François Jomard between 1821 and 1829 in a smaller (text) and uniform format (volumes of plates). It comprises 24 volumes of text published in 26 volumes, including volume 18 in 3 parts, with 86 plates on 80 folding leaves, including 3 maps. Volumes 1 to 9 are dedicated to descriptions and memoirs of Egyptian antiquity, while volume 10 contains explanations of the plates in the antiquity section. Volumes 11 to 18 describe the modern state of Egypt, and volumes 19 to 24 detail the natural history of the region. The text volumes are accompanied by 11 volumes of plates featuring a total of 908 copper-engraved illustrations and maps. Geographical Atlas - 1 volume illustrated with 53 maps and plates, including double-page engraved title. This monumental publishing venture was the fruit of collaboration between scientists, artists and technicians who followed Bonaparte to Egypt (1798-1801). Bonaparte's military expedition to Egypt was accompanied by a scientific expedition to study the country. A science and arts commission was set up, bringing together scientists and experts from a variety of fields, including painters, naturalists, mathematicians, astronomers, geographers, architects, sculptors, writers and printers, among them Jacques Barraband, Geoffroy Saint Hilaire, Jules-César Savigny, Pierre-Joseph Redouté, Vivant Denon, Conté and Méchain. Two months after their arrival in Egypt, Bonaparte founded the Institut d'Egypte to record the work of scholars in various fields, including antiquity, architecture and language. Despite the obstacles, the expedition brought back an impressive quantity of unpublished documents, culminating in the publication, from 1809, of the "Description de l'Egypte". This monumental work is divided into four sections dealing with ancient and modern Egypt, natural history and geography. (engraved title), XI-140 p., pl., half blond basane with corners circa 1800, spine with 6 nerves, gilt fleurons, red edges (spine rubbed, headband and headband torn off, corners and edges worn; russeting and small rubbing to engraved title; slight marginal browning; tear repaired front board p.91; text page 7-8 short margin seems to have been removed. Sumptuous collection, illustrated from drawings made by the author during a stay in Rome in 1676-1677. At Colbert's request, and at the king's expense, the work was published in 1682, and was illustrated by the best architectural engravers of the period, in particular Lepautre, Leclerc and Marot. Antoine Desgodets (1653-1728), the king's architect from 1699, held the position of controller of the king's buildings, then taught at the Académie royale d'Architecture. This "major work of Western architecture" was highly praised from the outset. This "New Edition" is in response to demand from enthusiasts; it simply consists of a new edition of the original plates, with a title page whose address and date have been changed. (Cf. O. Copy with all margins preserved (h=137 mm.); the composition of the text does not exceed 70 mm. and suggests that the actual format is in-32. (Brunet II, 1164, coll. eronnée; Gay I, 347).

First edition of this remarkable work, which offered the European public an original, rich and precise approach to the Chinese world. It is the masterwork of Jesuit Father J.-B. Du Halde (1674-1743), who drew most of his material from the reports of his fellow missionaries, published in particular in the famous Lettres édifiantes et curieuses, écrites des Missions étrangères, which he edited from 1711 to 1743. Thus, without ever having been to China, Du Halde was able to produce this highly erudite work, touching on every facet of the country described, its geography and history, but also the customs, traditions and religious practices of its inhabitants, as well as all its practical and technical activities. The entirely copper-engraved illustrations comprise 65 plates, including 43 maps (42 of which, devoted to the Chinese provinces, are the work of Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville, and one, of Korea, is by Jesuit cartographer and missionary Jean-Baptiste Régis). (including title and frontispiece), 1 folding plate, paperback, original printed blue-gray paper covers (upper cover and title, tears in margins of title, margins browned). Rare first edition of the project to build a 300-meter-high iron tower for the 1889 Universal Exhibition, by engineer-constructor Gustave Eiffel (1832-1923), a project initiated and drawn up by Emile Nouguier (1840-1897), Maurice Koechlin (1856-1946) and Stephen Sauvestre (1847-1919), his collaborating engineers and architect. A dedication copy by the author, with the autograph note "Hommage de l'auteur G. E." on the cover. This memoir, read to the Société des Ingénieurs civils by Eiffel, presents detailed studies, feasibility (wind resistance and stability), construction methods (masonry, steel or iron, hydraulic elevators, electric lighting) and cost. It also reports on the favorable opinion of several personalities regarding the construction of such a tower from a scientific point of view, including Admiral Mouchez, director of the Observatory, and Mr. Pierre Puiseux, astronomer attached to the same observatory. The work is illustrated with a fold-out plate featuring plans, sections and miscellaneous information, two figures in the text, one of which is a full-page reproduction of the Washington monument, and a frontispiece depicting the Eiffel Tower, by Poyet.

Although very tired, this copy bears witness to the piety of the Protestants who preserved it.
