American Family, tied with Allstate at No. 6 in our rating, offers average rates slightly higher than the national average. The company scored well in the claims handling, discounts, and customer service subcategories. It came in last among companies in our rating for customer loyalty and most likely to be recommended. In addition, the company is rated No. 9 in most likely to be renewed. Our scores in these and other key areas included results of a consumer survey that gauged policyholder satisfaction with their auto insurers. Across driver categories we analyzed, American Family’s sample rates generally landed in the bottom half, indicating it has higher rates, on average, than many of the featured companies.
For customer service, American Family landed in the middle of the pack at No. 5. When asked if they were completely satisfied with American Family’s customer service, nearly 57% of survey respondents said yes. Nearly 59% said they were completely satisfied with the ease of reaching customer service.
When it comes to processing claims, American Family is No. 3 behind only USAA and Auto-Owners in our subcategory rating. More than 37% of those who responded to our survey said they were completely satisfied with how easy it was to file a claim, and with the status updates they received about those claims. About 53% of respondents said they were completely satisfied with how their claim was resolved.
In our survey of consumers, approximately 41% of participants said they are very likely to recommend American Family to someone looking for car insurance. Nearly 51% said they were very likely to renew their American Family policy. American Family landed in the No. 10 spot in our subcategory rating for customer loyalty.
American Family is No. 7 among the best car insurance companies for seniors, ahead of Farmers, Allstate, and Nationwide. The company’s average rates for female and male senior drivers are higher than the national average rates. In rating the best car insurers for senior drivers, we included survey responses from those 55 and older.
American Family took the No. 3 spot for discounts, behind only USAA and Auto-Owners. Approximately 43% of survey respondents said they were completely satisfied with the policy discounts offered by American Family.
American Family’s average rate for car insurance is approximately $100 higher per year than the national average, according to our analysis. Looking at all companies, American Family’s sample premium was third-highest, behind only Farmers and Allstate. In a number of categories, the company’s average rates are higher than the national average. American Family has the third-highest average rates among companies we researched for drivers with a speeding ticket, drivers with one accident, and drivers with one DUI.
American Family’s sample premiums for teen drivers are approximately $1,100 per year lower than the national average for female teens and more than $700 less than the national average for male teens. Compared to the cheapest company for this age group, Erie, American Family’s average annual rates are nearly $1,800 more for female teens and $2,300 more for male teens. But compared to the most expensive company in our analysis for teen drivers, Farmers, American Family’s rates are more than $7,500 per year less for female teens and more than $7,300 less for male teens.

Compared to the national average, American Family’s rates are $57 per year higher for female young adult drivers and $233 more for male young adult drivers. Young adult drivers are defined in our study as single 25-year-old motorists. Drivers this age are usually charged less than teen drivers. They’re more experienced on the road and are generally viewed as less risky to insure. But their rates tend to be higher than those for older adults and seniors.

For adult drivers – married 35-year-olds in our analysis – American Family’s rates are approximately $50 more annually than the national average for females and about $100 higher for male drivers. American Family’s rates for female and male adult drivers are $780 and nearly $850 higher, respectively, than the cheapest company, USAA. USAA’s policies are exclusive to the military community. Compared to the most expensive company in our rating for this age group, Allstate, American Family’s rates are nearly $1,300 per year less for female adult drivers and nearly $1,200 less for male drivers.

However, American Family finished ahead of Allstate for customer service, claims handling, and discounts, as well as in the subcategory of best for senior drivers. But Allstate finished ahead of American Family for customer loyalty, most likely to be recommended, and most likely to be renewed.
Regarding rates, American Family’s average rate is about $1,200 per year less than Allstate’s. Across all of our categories, Allstate’s rates are higher than American Family’s. Allstate has the highest sample rates in many of the categories we researched.
