I see this all over the internet, people saying Popestar is their worst release. Honestly I liked it, especially the cover of Missionary Man...
Why do people hate on "Popestar" EP?
I don't know if I "hate" it, but I don't like any of the covers. At all. I am sure, as evidenced by other comments in this thread, that this can be chalked up to me
-
not being adaptable to change, or
-
jumping on a "hate bandwagon", or
-
being dumb, or
-
liking songs about Satan.
At the end of the day, I didn't like the music. Feel free to prescribe my motivation as it suits ya.
Personally, I like it a lot. IMO, Papa sounds a bit too nasal on Missionary Man's intro, but it is quickly forgiven.
I think he meant for it to sound that way, very mocking. I kinda like how nerdy he sounds on that song!
Yeah, I always got the vibe of that song meant to be very humorous (which it is, for me, which is part of the reason I love it so much).
It makes up for it in catchiness
Maybe because, aside from Square Hammer, it's all covers?
I really like the EP. Feels like we got a great new single with a few cool bonus covers to go with it.
I don't see many complaining about If You Have Ghost, which was also all covers except for one original song, which was just a live version of a song off of the last album.
Why? Because it sounded like Ghost.
Out of all of their discography, If You Have Ghosts is my least favorite. It's still good, but I personally like Popestar way better.
I think that a good chunk of the people jumped on the "Popestar sucks!" train because it was "cool" to, the same way some people who loooved Meliora at first now say IT sucks and that Ghost "sold out" after Infestissumam. There are people who genuinely dislike the songs on Popestar or the general sound, which is certainly their prerogative, although I personally liked the EP quite a lot. But, there also seems to be a lot of jumping on the "cool people" bandwagon, which is just silly to me.
I find it bizarre that people say Ghost sold out after Infest. I always found Infest to be their weakest release musically.
It's because the Ghostly Ghost sound is missing from Popestar. It was a rushed release during an intense touring schedule and its sole purpose was to bring in an audience that would normally not be interested in Ghosts previous recordings, like the guy in a previous post. It was probably an idea that his management convinced him of and he didnt have Omega around to push back. I know quite of few other fans of Ghost that came aboard early in there career that do not like it AT ALL.
I mean it worked. I might never have heard of them if it hadn’t been for Popestar. Is it their best? Not really, but it’s still good and that’s all that matters to me
Square Hammer itself is so catchy and fun it makes it all worth it. I saw them for the first time over the summer and it was a fantastic start to the show!
Wait, there are people that don't think their cover of Nocturnal Me is amazing? Hmmmm weird
Square hammer is good, I’m not too big of a fan of the EP. It’s not bad but I just prefer their hard rock sound. Also agree that Papa’s voice is just too nasally which makes it hard for me to listen to.
Because people like what they like from a band, and when the direction changes even slightly for half a second they riot. It's the same thing with Mastodon recently. Everyone hates that they aren't strictly metal any more, which is ludicrous because the last three releases are fucking tight.
So, bias. Bias due to static between what is and what people think should be. Sucks to be them!
It’s by far my least favorite Ghost record, but only because I got insanely burned out on Square Hammer about a week after release. Papa’s goal was simple and catchy, and he succeeded in achieving that.
The covers are a great selection of tunes and they’re done really well, but Meliora and Popestar are a bit too “polished” sounding for my ear.

I like both releases, but I agree with you. I enjoy all the albums but Infestissumam is my personal "sweet spot" between being polished and still keeping it creepy.
I didn't really like it honestly. Square Hammer is great but I didn't feel too strongly about any of the covers.
Nocturnal Me is one of my favorite songs Ghost has done. Its just a wonderful cover.
I personally feel like a majority of people genuinely disliked Popestar because it was their most distant release from their discography, sonically wise. Of course some people may have jumped on a "hate bandwagon" but I genuinely disliked every song from the EP except for Nocturnal Me. People knew exactly that it was going to be an EP full of covers, aside from Square Hammer, and probably had higher expectations. Especially considering how well done the If You Have Ghosts EP was. For the most part, the Ghost fanbase is pretty bad but I don't think this was a bandwagon issue at all. It was very very different and people don't like change.
Sounds rushed and un-Ghostly.
For you chalking up that people are stupid and are jumping on the hate bandwagon, consider that those people may have different tastes than yours and don't put musical groups on ridiculously high pedestals.
It’s just meh. Good production, meh song choice. Square Hammer is a much more fun song to play on guitar than it is to listen, IMO. I like Nocturnal Me, Bible I can take or leave, but the other two aren’t anything special.
Once again, on the internet, hate = dislike, don’t care for, or indifference. I don’t hate it. But it’s my least favorite Ghost release.
Keep in mind, it’s a covers EP meant to extend an album cycle instead of a proper record.
Tom Degalty did a good job, but I’m not going to judge him properly until the new album comes out since he’s producing it.
Is he? or did he do the live album?
Hardcore fan and a fan since the beginning (just for context)
Definitely their weakest release, Square Hammer is good but that's about it...the 2 cover EPs just aren't very exciting, it's not that they're bad, they're just bland, kinda vanilla...I think they (he) could have picked better songs from the performers they chose...I get the Roky cover because of their name but I think "Night of the Vampire" or "Bloody Hammer" would have been better...should have done "Killing Moon" by Echo &TBM...
With rare exception, I don't usually like covers. Personally why I don't care for the album.
Square Hammer, Nocturnal Me, and Bible are all great, but I Believe and Missionary Man are really lackluster covers that drag the EP down hard. Also, Papa's vocals on that are the peak of his nasal Beach Boys singing and it doesn't work for me at all.
Eh, it's definitely my least favorite album. I like the first three songs but Missionary Man and Bible I just don't enjoy.
Well it’s an EP so it’s not meant to be a full length album, but I actually like this EP a lot.
I do not believe there is any substantiation to the I hate Popestar train. It is what it is. Weak ,to much of a deviation from the Ghost style and a complete disappointment. Please, no its just an Ep comments. That's no excuse. If the next album comes out sounding anything like Popestar you'll pleased to know you won't have to see anymore rant posts from alot of us because will be gone from Ghost fandom.
I upvoted you in before the downvote outrage train coming your way. ;)
What is your opinion on Meliora then?
I like Meliora very much, just like the previous two albums. Yes Meliora had a more polished sound, but their trend from album to album seemed to be heading that way.It really was amazing that they could do songs like Cirice and He is and still have that Ghost vibe to them. I thought if you had Ghost was ok ,but I do not listen to it much. The difference in Popestar with the exception of Nocturnal me is their previous covers where others songs turned Ghost.Popestar did not accomplish that,it was more like someone else's songs turned into someone else's songs. As a Ghost fan I was disappointed. My previous posts may have seemed harsh, but the train comment and the Ghost is great they can do no wrong thing got under my skin.
I never said people were dumb, but have you watched the news lately,it kinda looks like why are. .
Every band will have a group of fans who will adore everything that is released. I mod r/muse and have seen people who believe being a "true" fan is liking every single thing they release. I have also seen people who make me ask myself whether they actually like the band or are just looking for something to complain about. But these are just the extremes.
Anyway, I think Popestar was released as an experiment where the band was free to stray far from their main style. The next album will probably follow Meliora (I hope).
Its their worst release, but that doesn't mean its bad. I personally didn't like any of the songs on it, but its not a bad EP
I'm breaking up with you ,but I still want to be friends.
People hate it? I genuinely love every song on it. Missionary Man and I Believe may be some of my favorite covers of anything. dat harmonica
I think it's one of the best releases they've made also. My g/f introduced me to them with Popestar EP, and I really enjoyed it, she also played their other stuff for me, which I enjoyed too.
Frankly, I love everything Ghost has ever made. Seriously, there isn't a single song I dislike, covers included. Sometimes I skip Majesty and/or Crucified, but usually I listen to their albums from top to bottom. I don't recall the last time I got this involved with a band.
I might be fangirling over them, but I truthfully enjoy all of their covers more than the originals. I love The Beatles, but I'll choose Ghost's cover any day, any time. Missionary Man, Marionette and If you Have Ghosts are just out of this world.
But Majesty is awesome :(
You skip Majesty,Maybe that's where Zenith should of been.
Because it's made of fillers and the only new song sounds like a Bon Jovi's arena hit single only calibrated for mainstream US radio.
I upvoted you
People are dumb. But good music is good music, and I’m sure TF had very specific reasons he chose those covers. Ghost is ALWAYS top notch, no matter what. TF is a creative and diverse musician. Look at how many bands and musical styles he done in the past! Popestar is a fun change from hearing them sing about Satan 24/7.
