County Courthouse
The Domestic Relations Court is in the Cuyahoga County Courthouse, Lakeside Courthouse, or the Old Courthouse. The Courthouse opened in 1912 and was built in the Beaux Arts style. The Courthouse currently has five floors, including the basement. The Courthouse is located in the center of the Greater Cleveland Metropolitan Area and is built on land previously part of the French colony of Canada. The Courthouse is also located on the southern shore of Lake Erie. At the 2020 census, the population of Cuyahoga County, Ohio, is 1,280,000, and the County is the second most populated County in Ohio.
County Clerk
Known as the Clerk of Courts, the Clerk performs filing, preservation, retrieval, and public dissemination of all court documents and records pertaining to the Common Please Court’s General and Domestic Relations Division and Court of Appeals, Eighth Appellate District. The Clerk holds in trust and disburses monies paid to the Court and County.
The current Clerk of Courts is Nailah K. Byrd, appointed to the Advisory Committee of Ohio Legal Help. This position is the official record keeper for Cuyahoga County. The position takes online payments and is the official recipient of Child Support Cash Payments. The Clerk of Courts also handles court fees and court costs.
The Clerk keeps all public records, and they can be requested from the Clerk’s office unless exempt from disclosure under Ohio or federal law. The Clerk of the Courts accepts passport applications and passes them on to the U.S. Department of State. Ohio Court of Appeals
The Court of Appeals is an intermediate-level appellate court. The primary function of the Court of Appeals is to try appeals from common pleas, municipal, and County courts. A three-judge panel determines cases. The state is divided into twelve appellate districts, and each district is served by a court of appeals in each County.
Cuyahoga County is the Eighth District and has twelve judges. The Court of Appeals hears appeals from the Court of Common Please, which includes the Domestic Relations Division and thirteen Municipal Counties in the County. However, there is no county court in Cuyahoga County.
The Court of Common Pleas
This Court is one of general jurisdiction, and the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas has four divisions. These are General, Domestic Relations, Juvenile, and Probate. There are 47 judges on the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas. The General, Juvenile, and Probate judges; Domestic Relations has five; Juvenile Division has six; and the Probate Division has two judges.
The General Division tries criminal felony cases and civil lawsuits that involve more than $15,000. The General Division also hears appeals from some administrative agencies. The Domestic Relations Division hears all cases involving dissolution of marriage (divorce), annulment, and legal separation. It also handles child and spousal support, allocating parental responsibilities and rights. This Division also enforces the terms or directives of cases.
Included in the Court of Common Pleas is the Juvenile Division. This Division hears cases that involve persons under 18 who are charged with crimes that would be difficult if omitted by an adult. The Juvenile Division also hears cases dealing with unruly and neglected children. Cases concerning child abuse, paternity, failure to send children to school, and nonsupport are also heard in the Juvenile Division.
The Probate Division hears disputes over estates and wills, supervises various guardianship, and handles adoptions. It also handles hearing to determine sanity and competency. The Division issues marriage licenses, and judges perform marriages.

There is no Superior Court, Civil Court, or Felony Drug Court in Cuyahoga County. The different divisions of the Court of Common Pleas handle court cases. Fourteen Municipal Courts also serve court matters. The District Court for the Northern District of Ohio has jurisdiction in Cuyahoga County. If you have an appeal from the Northern District, you must contact the United States Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit.
