When will Elijah Mitchell return and be back with 49ers?

Here we answer the question as to when will Elijah Mitchell return and be back on the field with the 49ers. Mitchell suffered a sprained MCL in his right knee during the 49ers’ 19-10  loss to the Bears at rainy Soldier Field on September 11. The injured 49ers RB was eligible to come off of IR ahead of San Francisco’s October 16 Week 6 game at Atlanta. The timetable on Mitchell’s return around the time of the injury was 8 weeks. Recovery for a Grade 3 MCL sprain, which is what Mitchell is believed to have suffered, is generally two months. Mitchell did not require surgery.

Here is the general timetable for when Mitchell is expected to return from his injury.

  • Week 10 Sunday, November 13: Chargers vs. 49ers
  • Week 11 Monday, November 21: Cardinals vs. 49ers
  • Week 13 Sunday, November 27: Saints vs. 49ers

Update: The 49ers RB is practicing this week ahead of San Fran’s game against the Chargers. Mitchell said on Nov. 1 that he “expects to be activated and ready for the Nov. 13 game against the Chargers,” according to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco. San Francisco then opened the 21-day IR practice window for Mitchell to return on November 7.

The 49ers have their bye during Week 9 of the season. San Francisco brass could have tried to rush Mitchell back for the Week 8 October 30 game at the Rams but because of the risk of re-injury and the fact that they traded for Christian McCaffrey – they can take their time. A return for the Rams game would have been only 49 days since the injury. It was always more likely that the Niners waited until after their bye week to bring Mitchell back and 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed as much on October 15, saying that the Niners are “hoping to get him back after the bye week.” Coming back for the Week 10 game against the Chargers on November 13 would give Eli Mitchell 63 days of recovery. That looks like the most likely game in which we could see Mitchell back on the field for Shanahan’s club.
