A young woman, freshly engaged to a successful doctor, is unaware of a big secret: her mother served a life sentence in prison, saved from the gallows only by giving birth. Meanwhile, a friend of the prisoner's is released, and her husband is intent on getting her back into a life of crime. Say, by blackmailing the prisoner's daughter....
The young woman learns the awful truth, then tries to drop the doctor to spare him the scandal.
All of that is much more satisfactory than the b-plot, which involves doctors jockeying for position as chief of staff, to succeed their retiring leader.
