Duke Alexander of Wrttemberg was the son of another Duke Alexander of Wrttemberg (1771-1833). His mother was Antoinette of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (1779-1824). He was a first cousin of Queen Victoria of England. Like his father he worked for the Russian army, and he saw action against the Osman Empire in 1828 and against Poland in 1831.

To marry Marie of Orlans, the daughter of king Louis Philippe of France, he had to promise that their children would be raised in the Roman Catholic faith. The marriage took place on 17 October 1837 in Versailles. They had one son, Philipp of Wrttemberg (1838-1917) and Marie died in 1839. After her death he lived in Schloss Fantaisie near Bayreuth in the summer and in his house in the City of Bayreuth in the winter.

His second wife was Katharina Pfennigkufer, who was married to a baker named Kirsch when he met her in Frankfurt am Main. After a payment of 25,000 guilders to her husband she obtained a divorce. Alexander married her in 1868 and she received the title of Frau von Meyenberg. Their marriage was unhappy. He died in Bayreuth in 1881. After his death, his widow lived at the Reitzenstein-Palais in Bayreuth.
